Pannepeut Old Monk's Ale 2011
Pours dark murky amber brown, makes sense as it is bottle conditioned and all.
Very nice beery smell, yeasty, during the pour to a Chimay chalice. Slight boozy raisin smell over the glass. Nice solid coating of lace.  
Taste is boozy up front with nice dark fruity characters, I suspect fig. Curious taste.
I do enjoy the initial flavors of this brew and it is pretty smooth. Oaky.  
Overall an enjoyable sipper. I'm not sure of the difference if this were a Pannepot instead of the Pannepeut that it was (the label indicates a Danish version if that's the difference).

Bottle purchased at Premiere Gourmet in Buffalo, NY. ’11 vintage.

Pours a dark garnet red/brown, with a half inch head that descends quite quickly to a film on top of the beer. The head sort of remains on the very edges of the beer. No lacing.

Smells like molasses, caramel, honey, and toasted bread. No chocolate, unlike it’s cousin- Pannepot- Old Fisherman’s Ale.

Tastes quite sweet. Some honey and molasses flavors up front, a bit of toasted bread. No alcohol is present. As the beer is pretty thin, it stays away from being too syrupy sweet.

This one is a little thinner than I would’ve wanted, unfortunately letting it also fall a little flat in the flavor department. Almost no carbonation. Nonetheless, pretty drinkable.

Inferior to regular Pannepot, but still fairly tasty. Probably wouldn’t buy it again, though.

To understand how much a type of beer can be pushed, the boundaries of the envelope must be reached. And that's where Panepeut goes.

Pouring a rich prune-rust color, there's colors of red, purple and brown that all culminate in a very murky set of hues. A creamy ivory-stained forms above its haze with semi-strong retention as its head begins to fall apart after a few minutes. With light and isolated pockets of foam, its lacing is light but apparent.

Its tart and fruity aromas are woven together with light elements of toast, chocolate and confectioner's type of sweetness. But the scent of dry wine, cider and oak plays into its tangy and earthy scent.

Its tart and malty taste promotes a complex taste even on the earl palate- Its light honey and powdered sugar taste is immediately met with sourish red grapes, cider, oaken merlot, light vinegar and savory soy character. Its deliciously dry taste is challenged by the dry earthiness of attic-like must, cellar character and overall aged woods that stops shy of mushroom.

Drier than the typical Strong Belgian Dark Ale, Pannepeut starts with a creamy and carbonated dryness that dictates its texture throughout. Finishing warm and winey, it's evident that the beer's acidity has a lot to do with its taste.

As a stand-alone beer- Panepeut seems to under-deliver as its taste falls tarter and more "challenging" to the taste. Paired with food, I can see this beer singing with pickled flavors and petite beef filet.

2006 vintage.

Pours into my snifter a deep, dark garnet that glows crimson at the edges in the light. A quarter inch of khaki foam sits atop the brew. Aromas start with big vinous malts with toffee, caramel and cocoa intertwined. Dark fruits and raisins abound.

First sip brings smooth, deep malts teeming with vinous notes, toffee, caramel and cocoa. Loads of dark fruits and raisins throughout the middle. A touch of spice as it flows down with a warming alcohol on the finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth with spot on carbonation. Goes down pretty easy considering the abv. Overall, another tasty brew from Struise and one I'm glad I picked up. Wish I had another lying around.

Brown color with a beige head and decent retention. Smell is of brown sugar, plums, raisins, and caramel. Taste is slightly tart, has some tastes of pears, caramel, toffee, and some dark fruits too. Medium bodied with a heavier than medium body. Thanks for sharing this, Joey.

Thanks to someone for sharing this bottle at thirdeye11's recent tasting. Sorry I don't remember who brought it.

The beer pours a medium brown color with a khaki head. The aroma is brown sugar along with caramel malt and dark fruit. The flavor is very fruity: cherries, plums, raisins. There is also some lightly roasted, caramel and toffee malt. Overall the beer is pretty sweet. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle of 2010 vintage poured into a big ass chalice. $4.60 Euro for a 330 ml bottle.

A-This brew is darker than other quads, dark chocolate color and murky with a couple fingers of tan creamy head that breaks down fairly easy without lacing the glass. Looks pretty well carbonated.

S-Even at cold temperature this beer has lots of aroma. Notes of rich, caramel, bready malt; tons of beautiful fruity esters big time ripe dark fruits, I'll go with raisin as the closest fruit to compare to . There is a fair amount of peppery spiciness in here too along with an inviting soft alcohol nose.

T-Similar to the nose, this beer is big and complex. Lots of sweet, bready malt with ripe dark fruits with a vapory alcohol finish that dries the mouth out just a bit inviting that next drink.

M-A very drinkable 10% ABV beer, mouthfeel has plenty of malt body but doesn't seem heavy. A bit above average in the carbonation which works well to cleanse the palette and carry all the flavor popping out in each drink. Alcohol is vapory but not hot at all-very nice.

O-Damn this is a tasty quad. I don't have a fresh one to compare with, but this beer is damn near perfect right now. Equally tasty as a sipper or a gulper I wish I had more of this beer. A little more expensive than my favorite quad, St. Bernardus, but in the same class. Well done beer that brings me back to Belgium.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2015. 2009 vintage. Acquired from a Belgian webshop some time back.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. A dark, hazy reddish hue, with plenty of yeast sediment left in the bottle. Produces a decent head of creamy tan foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding. A rich, fruity aroma - notes of figs, fruitcake, plums, vanilla, dried fruit, peel and earthy yeast. A warm, spicy booziness in the background, as if a tot of rum had been added into the mix...

Tastes intensely sweet and fruity, with a boozy finish. Notes of fruitcake, orange, figs, dried fruit, peel, vanilla and dry yeast. A spicy alcoholic flavour in the background, with phenolic hints. Mouthfeel is smooth and full-bodied, with pleasant carbonation. Quite dry, and rather astringent. Aftertaste of fruitcake and booze - tasty!

Pretty good - a complex, fruity quad that lives up to the style. Doesn't quite match some others that I've tried, though I can't pinpoint why. Orange seems to come through in the flavour, and the alcoholic notes definitely remind me of dark rum. All said, a solid effort that is well worth trying.

Brown and a dark red colored beer, thin beige head to it, sticks around for awhile. Aroma, was not my cup of tea, alcohol and belgian yeast come across in a less than enjoyable aroma for myself.

Taste, whooo, this is a strong beer, I am drinking a fresh bottle of 2011 for this review. If there's fruit here, its the crappy kind, like fig, raisins, prunes etc. ..

Can't wrap myself around this beer, everyone else drinking it likes it, I just think it tastes really strongly of alcohol, which is blurring my ability to taste the other aspects of the beer, but in the few times I've pulled out other flavors, they happen to be those fruits I'm not all big on either. Malt deals in caramel and moreso toffee flavors. Spicing, I dunno, doesn't really come out too much, the heat is blocking my senses.

Really expensive for my enjoyment level.

Dark fruit big opaque body deep burgundy brown quadrupel on our hands, with big fluffy khaki brown head forming thick leaving fine speckled Belgian style lacing. Aroma has dark fruit raisin, plum, and other over ripened fruits seeping through your nares as you inhale each sip. I'm currently smoking a Viaje Roman Candle with this quad, and it goes great together...that's not surprising at all deep smoke, spicy black pepper, and other dark leather notes form so well with the Nicaraguan tobacco utilized in this huge spice bomb of a cigar. It's a nice combo of sweet and salty even umami at times on the palate, huge dark malt base with Belgian yeast spice providing the fermentation on this beer. Andre' Farkas from Viaje has done so well with this cigar line, but enough about the smoke let's talk more beer. Perfect level of acidity like a red grape ripened to the point that it's ready to bulge and transmorph into a plump raisin. Mouthfeel is magnificent perfect driven naturally carbonated mouthfeel leaves the palate with some effervescence to carry on the complex body and flavor. Overall, quite frankly I'm in love with this beer yet it needs more age to truly express itself the English on the front of the label says 2012 and it calls itself Old Monk's Ale...I can see why!

On-tap at the Brick Store. Apparently De Struise has begun putting their beer into key kegs which is exciting.

Pours an opaque brownish-gold color with a 1.5-finger cream-colored head. The head recedes into a patchy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of brown sugar, caramel malts, milk chocolate, faint spices, and boozy pears and figs. As the beer warms the fruit aromas and spices intensify slightly.

Tastes similar to how it smells although not quite as complex. Deep caramel malt flavors backed by Belgian candi sugar kick things off. Midway through the sip toffee-covered medium fruit flavors make an appearance. Finally, hints of indistinct spices make an appearance near the end of the sip, giving way to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is great. It's got a heavy thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall I thought this version was boozier than the American version which hurt the drinkability a bit but the best part of either version is the smooth mouthfeel. Well worth a shot if you have the chance, as is the American version.

330mL bottle picked up in Denver in March 2014. This is the 2012 version poured into a snifter. The bottle reads Pannepeut here, while other bottles I've had say Pannepot with a strike through the o.

A dark barleywine-like beer pours from the bottle, resembling a raisin in color with its dark brown base and amber hues. The head forms about a half finger thick before dissipating to a persistent layer of lace atop the beer. Carbonation bubbles steadily surge upward throughout the beer.

I get a lot of tartness and sour on the nose. I wasn't expecting this but I'm intrigued. There are hints of orange, oatmeal cookie, and a spice that I want to say is coriander. It's interesting.

Everything I got on the nose carries to the palate, but it's accompanied there by a sweet malt flavor and raisins that is very similar to a dubbel. It's almost buttery. The tartness remains but is pleasant and doesn't seem out of place. At the finish, I get an array of lingering flavors: citrus, spice, and dark fruit.

A range of sensations to this beer, ranging from tartness, to creamy and buttery, to slightly effervescent. It's pretty easy to toss back as there's no hint of booze to be found.

I have yet to be disappointed by De Struise Brouwers and this beer only reaffirms my belief that I should seek their beers out at every opportunity possible. Quite good.

2011 Vintage

A: Pours a very deep burgundy/brown color with about a finger of tan head on top. Pretty thick, with good retention, thin lacing forms around the glass.

S: A little closed, but there some dark fruit, bread, caramelized malt, and brown sugar. As it warms the dark fruit comes out much more.

T: Rather sweet, some caramel, candied sugar, and lots of dark fruit presence. Some raisin, plum, and prune as well as a slight bready flavor.

M: Full bodied with medium carbonation, pretty smooth. Get a slight warming from the alcohol.

O: Another solid beer from De Struise. Look forward to trying regular Pannepot at some point..if I can find it.

33 cl bottle, 2011 vintage.

Served at cellar temp into a goblet.

Old Monk's Ale is a deep redish brown with good clarity on the pour. A little bit of lees is left in the bottle. Head is thin and white but settles to a skim layer pretty quickly.

Aroma is a wonderful mix of Belgian yeast, caramel and toasted malt, and dark fruits.

Flavor is interesting and unusual and I mean that in a good way. It seems to have a more earthy character than other Belgian quads that I've had. Similar in the sense that it has the raisin, cloves, and complex yeast notes. Different in a musky pepper kind of way. Hard to describe actually.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and well carbonated. Balanced but a little high in alcohol. It would certainly mellow out with 1-2 years in the beer cellar.

Overall a really excellent beer and it stands by itself in it's earthy complexity.

A - One of the most beautiful heads I have ever seen on a beer. The structure of the foam is just perfect. The beer itself is beautiful deep red and clear. There's no carbonation.

S - A champagne like smell with some fresh fruitiness added, in total very inviting.

T - What a beautiful and strong caramel presence. One of the strongest I have ever tasted in a beer, very nice. It comes along with toffee and fruits.

M - A soft carbonation, no real bitterness and alcohol to be discovered! For a 10% ABV!!! This is top notch stuff, although the body could have been thicker.

O - A very nice and superb beer - worth getting a crate of.

2007 vintage - poured from a 330mL bottle into my Trappist Westvleteren goblet. Not sure if this is a true variant of the standard Pannepot, as the wording on the bottle is ambiguous (and could refer to the beer itself being completely different or simply the pronounciation being completely different). Likely, there is significant batch variation for this beer in any case, so who really knows?

Dark murky brown body which glows as a deep burnt umber. Small buff head with a spackling of chocolate raindrops as the thick lees falls out onto the surface. A vaguely sinister malestrom swirls slowly, fed by a low persistent stream of micro-bubbles. Gleaming microscopic lacing forms tiny ornate shapes amidst a mirror sheen of legs.

The aromatics suggest prunes, figs, brown bread, caramel, dark malts, cherry pits, noble hops, and sweet/sour yeast with just a hint of clove (no real phenolics otherwise).

The flavor profile follows the nose closely, intensifying and diversifying each of the smells named above. Mid-palate there is a wave of coffee, leather, loam, leading into an earthy, gently sweet, almost sandalwood like finish with a whisper of olive oil (though not quite so peppery as this would suggest). Black currant and light spices emerge as the beer warms (the former possibly coming from the hops?). Haven't had the regular Pannepot in a while, but I think this is quite close in flavor overall.

Medium-full bodied, lightly effervescent, and satisfying mouthfeel. The ABV adds warmth and flavor but is well integrated.

Whatever its lineage/provenance/recipe - this is a unique and tasty example of the style.

11.2oz into snifter. 2008 vintage.
A: The body pours a rich, brown to light black body, that is very hazy around the edges where the most minimal light comes through. The light carbonation stream starts around the middle of the glass and rises with a constant preciseness. The head, a one finger pour, holds very well and does not retreat. The tan head, resembles a note of a lighter stout. The lacing on the glass is left in the pattern of a 45 degree angle at which the head is level while drinking.

S: A rich yeasty, raisin character . A deep and lingering aroma that denoted a rich, well aged and developed brew. Hints of spice, with nutmeg coming in at the most powerful. A deep waft senses a bit of warm brownies.

T/M: Hugely complex, from the moment the brew hits the lips, to the last very notion that beer was on the palate, all flavors are dancing and projecting different notes off each other. The front is a bold spice that rushes over the tongue and creates a warming effect. The mellow mouthfeel, shows the hidden, but present alcohol and backs up on the warming. The mouthfeel leave the mouth a waxy coating that releases flavors throughout. Notes of cinnamon and clove are found in the body. A very pleasant, rich note of raisins is underlining the experience. While malts do play a large role in this sensory experience, the hops do add a bit of bitterness on the finish. With a smooth luster of yellow cake on the off taste, this seals the deal. A great all around brew.

D: I find this to be an overly drinkable brew for the style. A beer that is great to sit back and enjoy while you take all the flavors and complexities in. The 10.00% alcohol is a bit present and if it would be masked a little different, I feel this would have received a 5 in score. None the less, stellar brew.

2007 vintage, scooped at beer temple in brussels - hooray for rare de struise

appearance: nightcap, served in wine glass at our lovely hotel - the dominican. lovely garnet-mahogany body with a creamy beige cap. fantastic retention

smell: classic quad - big malty aroma, brown sugar, toffee, dark fruits, belgian yeast, nicely spiced

taste: maybe not as brilliant as the reserva series, but a very nicely rounded quad - brown sugar, figs, dates, raisin, thick malts, holiday spice...love the pannepot line

mouthfeel: divine - creamy, medium-full bodied

drinkability: good

Single from the Foodery in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia.

This came off as a Belgian winter warmer to me. The spice was a nice, but somewhat overpowering, mix of cinnamon and sweet herbs. The malty Belgian beer in the background was pretty faint, but still provided a pretty nice background with a bit of fig. I can say this beer was very drinkable and quite nice, but not worth the $8 price tag.

Beer was handed to me and I really didn't know what to think. It;s one of those special beers that I never get to drink, but yet it's in front of me.

a: Murky dark brown color, opaque with a nice 1/2 finger head. Head sticks around pretty long too.

s: Raisins, Dark fruit dominate with alcohol hidden in there. Maybe some coffee in the nose as well.

t: Raisins, Dark Fruits, Toffee, sweet candi cugar, pure awesomeness? Is that a flavor?

m: Rich, full, silky smooth. I think the carbonation is well done and hides the sharpness of the alcohol. I know I wanted to swish this around in my mouth for forever.

d: Best quad i've ever drank, I haven't had that many, but still. At 10% this would hit you hard after a few.

Pours a cloudy dark brown color with a small light tan head that lasts. Not lacking in viscosity.

The aroma is big, intense, and awesome. Caramel, toffee, raisins and other dark fruits, molasses.

Big amazing flavor as well, up there with regular Pannepot. Deep, rich malt notes, lots of toffee and some toast. Prunes, dates, and raisins, molasses, and slight anise.

Thick and silky smooth on the mouthfeel. Full-bodied with soft carbonation.

Despite the richness, finishing a sizable pour was easy. This is another excellent incarnation of an epic beer.

2006 bottle, it definitely is the Denmark version as it's spelled Pannepøt and not Pannepot on the bottle.

A- Poured into my Brewer's Art chalice leaving the dregs behind. Pours a dark brown, somewhat clear even though it's dark with ruby highlights. Finger thick light tan head forms but drops almost instantly.

S- at first it's quite one dimensional with sugar plum. As it warms up more of a chocolaty and roasted grain husk is brought out.

T- Fruity and spicy is dominant, but notes of chocolate and lightly roasted malt adds a ton of complexity. Light red wine like fruitiness. Sugary sweetness in the finish and very mild bitterness.

M- Carbonation is a little prickly but that can be worked out fairly well by swirling. The texture of the liquid is very nice, in the lighter medium range.

D- One of the best Belgians I've had. Probably the best quadrupel, although it was harder to tell with Westvleteren 12 because I only had a 1/2 bottle sample of.

330 mL bottle poured into an Ommegang chalice. 2010 bottle.

Appearance - Deep brown cola colored with a small khaki head. Settles to a collar and an island of bubbles.

Smell - Fruity and yeasty. Dark fruits dominate. Cola aroma reminiscent of other De Struise beers. Sweet malty aroma.

Taste - Fruity flavors at first. Immediately yeasty. Extremely yeasty, really. Cola flavors less intense, as is the sweetness. Dry and slightly bitter in the finish. A little bit of earthiness.

Mouthfeel - Really highly carbonated. Way too much. Dry and rather bitter.

Overall - Eh. Nothing near the beer that Pannepot is. I have a fresher bottle that I'll try.

11.2oz bottle. '06 European version. BA Sephiroth wasn't quite sure how he obtained it. Oh well, thanks Hans! Served in a tulip.

A: Small amount of head which dissipates quickly. Pours a murky, off brown color. No lacing.

S: Lots of candied fruit. Apple, plums, figs, etc... Some sweet malts and spiciness round out the bouquet of fragrances. Very nice.

T: Sweet, dark fruit dominates the flavor. Raisins, plums, dates and maybe even some pear? Caramel malts are definitely present, and a plethora of spices add a nice kick. There is some Belgian yeastiness and small amount of bready flavors to round things out. I think some extra age would really add to the richness of the flavors.

M: Medium bodied. Low carbonation makes this a very smooth ride...

D: Very good considering the high 10% ABV. Little or no heat present. A nice sipper for sure.

Probably my least favorite of the Pannepot incarnations, but that's a moot point considering how great they all are. As I mentioned above, I'd like to try this with a few more years on it. I do love me some well aged Quads.

2007 Vintage! Served from bottle into a Trappistes Rochefort chalice. Poured a deep reddish brown with a half finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark chocolate, dark fruit, and sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark chocolate, bread, raisins, and sweet alcohol on the followthrough. It had a heavy feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The alcohol on this one definitely made itself present on the followthrough without doubt. Hard to believe that with this one having 4 years on it already. Definitely worth trying if you get the chance!
