Originally reviewed on 09/06/2010. This is one of the reviews that was affected by the botched merge in order to clean up De Struise beers on BA.

2007 vintage, labeled "Pannepeut". Poured into a tulip at probably a little over 50 degrees.

Pours a nice dark brown color, but has hints of amber and ruby/deep purple at the edges. About one finger width of light tan head, appears fine, with no large bubbles in it. Good retention and okay lacing. About what I would expect for a beer of this caliber.

The aroma is outstanding. Big time red grape character jumps out of the glass, but other dark fruits quickly follow. Stuff like plum, raisin, raspberry, blackberry, currants, I'm even getting strawberries. Pick a fruit with berry in the name, then smell the beer, and I guarantee you'll find it. Beyond that, there is some definite angel food cake, along with some chocolate, and vanilla. Bunch of yeasty banana rounds things out, but not much spice or earth to be found.

Taste is right in line with the nose, but maybe a bit more mellow than I would have expected. First thing I taste is raspberry, followed by grape soda, sweet fruitcake, banana, earth, and finally a dash of black pepper. The nose just trumps this a little bit, but yeah, this is right up my alley and quite an amazing tasting quad.

Great feel, tender, yet sparkly enough to tickle the tongue and liven things up. Consistency is perfect, around medium.

A very approachable, amazing quad. I was expecting a decent bit of heat in the finish, but I got none. Maybe the age has worked some wonders by now to make this guy as stunningly drinkable as it is. I thoroughly enjoyed this beer until the last drop. Pannepot and Pannepeut remain my favorite quads, and I'm including Westy 12 when I make that statement.

Thanks to glouglouburp (on RB) for these. Side-by-side tasting with Pannepot 2006, Pannepøt 2006 and Pannepot Grand Reserva 2005.

Appearance: Pours a murky dark brown and very little light comes through. A thin layer of tan head recedes quickly. Same appearance as Pannepot. Grand Reserva is much darker than either.

Nose: Brighter and richer than Pannepot. Lots of raisin/fig and old tanned leather. The malt is less creamy and more raisin-y. Lots of dried fruits.

Palate: A little more body than the Pannepot. Medium- to medium-full and really sweet and rich. Lots of chocolate sauce and polished wood flavors. More simple and fat than the Pannepot. Flavors of molasses and demerara sugar come and go quickly and the finish is medium-short and simple.

Notes: I'm surprised somewhat by the Pannepot and Pannepøt: The former smells duller and is more spry on the palate while the latter has a more bright nose but is dull on the palate. My least favorite of the three tasted. Surprising, because I like the nose the best on this one, but the palate did not deliver.

2006 bottle picked up at the Alvinne bottleshop.

A - pours a root beer color with a finger of tan head, leaves a sheet with spots of lacing.

S - dark fruits (raisin, figs), caramel, a hint of alcohol.

T - Not the most complex, but damn it's tasty! Straight forward figs, grapes, yeast, and a caramel candi-sugar finish.

M/D - This is best regular version of Pannepot, hands down. Not even the 2005s I have are better (still too spiced and that's not really my thing). I finished this glass in record time because of the abrupt finish and lingering sweetness. I need another bottle.

(Note: This review is from Winter of 2007, just moving it here to help with the BA database. I actually haven't seen either of these on the shelf for quite some time, which is too bad. I left the scoring the same in spite of the tweaks to the reviewing score system)

I loved the "normal" Pannepot, so I had high hopes for this one, too.
Pours a cloudy brown color. There's a little bit of a reddish hint that wasn't in the normal one, but it's still more or less the color of cocoa.
Smells of dried fruits, milk chocolate, candy sugar, nutmeg, and maybe even cinnamon.
The taste is somewhat similar to the normal Pannepot, but it's less chocolate and sweet, but spices play a larger role. I can see why people are divided on the two. Depending on your tastes, you can certainly enjoy one more than the other.
This one doesn't feel quite as thick, but is drinkable all the same.
I polished off my bottle with no problems and (as always) I wish I had more around.
Next time I make the trek up to Liquor Max I think I'll get more of this one, too. I prefer the original, but this one's stellar in its own right.

2006 vintage. 11.2 oz bottle into a chimay goblet and left on the counter for a half hour. The beer did gush upon opening.

A - Nice mocha head that dies down to a solid layer of foam. Deep brown with some red tint. Theres some yeast sediment on the bottom of the glass.

S - Candied dark fruits, brown sugar, malt, and light alcohol. This smells really great, very sweet and complex.

T - Similar to the nose. Lots of dark brown sugar rich caramel and prune/dates. The alcohol is really well hidden but leaves some tingling. Very rich and moderately chewy mouth feel.

O - Complex but not over the top. This is an amazingly well crafted quad. Glad I got a chance to try this.

2008 vintage.

poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: Light brown body with red highlights. Light tan head with minimal lacing.

Smell: Malty and dark fruits with an equally strong smell of something thats a bit off. Maybe infection or astringency from the yeast?

Taste: Sweet raisins and figs. Caramel and maybe some toffee. Some bitterness that seems to be a bit off-putting... maybe its a metallic taste. Kind of distracts from the taste of the beer.

Mouthfeel: Its a full bodied beer. Thick and smooth. Mildly carbonated, i think that the carbonatioon is off on this one also.

Overall: This beer came highly recommended from a person who has very similiar beer tastes as i do. He even said its better than Westy 12, so that made this beer a must try in my book. But this beer just did not do it for me. This is my first beer have had by this brewery and i am not too impressed. I wish i could have tried this beer fresh to get a better idea of what its all about. It talks on the label about an ale thats brewed with spices and i get no hints of spices or any spicyness from this beer...not even a hint. I must be missing something here, i will have to give it another try sometime hopefully with better results.

330 mL bottle brought across the Atlantic from the brewery in May. 2008 vintage into a Tripel Karmeliet glass.

A - Fizzy two finger head, beige/dark khaki in colour. Lot's of visible carbonation. Dark ruby colour, almost opaque. Head sticks around for a long time. Good looking beer.

S - Huge aromas as soon as I opened it. Candi sugar and dark fruits. Huge dark fruit aromas from the glass. Lot's of plum and cherry. Can smell the heat as well.

T - Really malty flavours. Again with dark fruits but more subdued than the aroma. Really minimal alcohol taste makes itself known but doesn't do much to offend at all. Lovely and smooth. Huge plum finish.

M - Full bodied. Lingering flavours make it pleasant and carbonation doesn't make itself an issue.

D - Fairly high drinkability. Not too sweet and really complex. This would make me come back to figure out everything that's going on in this. Alocohol is well hidden too which allows this to be an easy drinker for a quad.

I was lucky enough to visit the brewery shop which appears to be an old school of some sorts. It was a perfect way to end my trip around Europe and given that I knew nothing about this brewery until the day I went there and sampled a number of their beers I am blown away by this at home. A wonderful beer made by a wonderful brewery. Well done!

Drank at Molenhof Bar, Oestvleteren, Belgium.

A - Pours a nice drk brown almost black colour that hold its head well and laces.

S - Dark fruits such as figs , prunes grapes and some smokey chocolate.

T - Plenaty of dark fruits and very well balanced sugars that leave the palatte just demanding more. The beer almost has an oak aged bruin feel to it. Slightly tart and full of flavour with incredible balance.

M - Smooth and low carbonation, that is a fullish body.

D - Another mastepiece from De Struise. The smoothnes is impressive indeed. Its my kind of beer because of the subtle and balnaced flavours. No massive flavours but rather a little bit of everything.

Pannepeut Old Monk's Ale

Appearance: Brown, small head, and some good lacing.

Smell: Brown sugar, dark fruits, and some cocoa.

Taste: Subtle smoke, raisins, dark fruits, slight chocolate, and a near-whiskey or scotch-like flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium-heavy malty, yet smooth.

Overall:
This is very complex. A fine brew indeed. It is subtly sweet, yet faintly reminds me of whiskey or scotch as far as flavoring goes. The 10% alcohol by volume isn't easily tasted in this.

2007 vintage, picked up at the Charleston Beer Exchange in - you guessed it - Charleston, SC. Enjoyed in the warmth of my room next to my only space heater after my heat failed on a 26 degree February night. Enjoyed from an oversized snifter.

Appearance: Pours a gamey Cumberland brown, smoky teriyaki cherry glaze on a bed of slow, pinprick carbonation. A moderately vigorous pour yields half a finger of perfectly tan head, fizzy and soda-like, but with a nonetheless inspiring amount of staying power - normally, the crowns of quadrupels with >10% abvs (particularly those poured in to oversized snifters) don't last half as long as this one did. Ultimately, it fades into absolute nothingness - no surface lace, no collar, no side lace, no nothing. All this is expected, but still a little disappointing. On the whole, this one looks about right, maybe a little better than average, but is still not terribly inspiring.

Aroma: Teriyaki and soy sauce, in the best way possible. The nose is fairly sweet, sweeter than the mouth (more on that in a moment), and free brown sugar and caramel esters warmly greet the nose and more than counter the alcohol esters - warming and tingly, not hot and spicy - that begin to radiate forth from this one as it nears warm temperature (a process that was accelerated by absentmindedly putting this one in front of the space heater a few times).

Taste: Relatively dry, with a nice quenching tartness and some greenery, plenty of spice, and a soupcon of heat. The malt bedrock is relatively dry, very toasty, but not without sweeter flourishes - brown sugar is plentiful, as is toffee, molasses, and even a few faint coffee overtones. Dark fruits and stone fruits mingle freely with the above, suggesting everything from nectarines at the top down to raisins near the bottom of the spectrum, hitting most everything in between - black cherries are particularly prominent. The warmth of cloves, cardamom, and something faintly smoky - a nutmeg-gy, anise-like note - effectively cover what otherwise might be perceived as a slightly too prevalent alcohol note, though the combination of all of the aforementioned suggest rum-macerated dark fruits in the way that only a good Belgian dark strong ale can.

Mouthfeel: Typically fantastic and quintessentially Belgian. Light, airy, fluffy, pillowy, and eruptive, but also even, smooth, and creamy, this one has that great "cloud floating over your tongue" sort of feel that amplifies both the malt and fruit elements of the flavor profile as well as the warmth of the alcohol and the yeast spices. It if just faded a little slower, it'd be a 5.0.

Drinkability: A great beer, though perhaps not as great as I remember Pannepot to be (though, admittedly, I haven't had it in quite some time). Not to be taken lightly at 10%, this one's good, with a quality nearly as high as its pricetag, though that perhaps sounds bitter of me. Worth seeking out, though don't go too far out of your way, relative to what you could get for the same price in the same or similar styles (Chimay Blue, St. Bernardus, Rochefort 10, etc.).

Pannepeut - 2007

Pours 1/2 finger of khaki tan head. Really nice retention with some lace rings. Color is a dark copper brown.

Aroma: A lot of malts and dark fruits. Caramel, toffee, and some bready malts. Raisins and licorice. Some plums. Rich and sweet. Very pleasant.

Taste: Rich and sweet. A lot of nice flavors blend together here. Plums, cherries, raisins, and figs. Toffee, caramel, and a hint of chocolate. A touch of alcohol shows.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy. A little dry. Medium to full bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Ends clean, but dry.

Overall, a nice quad. I am glad I finally got a chance to try it. One of Struise's better beers. Very enjoyable.

2007 bottle tasted blind at a top 10 quad blind tasting

A: Muddy brown, super thin off-white/dirty water head

S: Mild dark fruits, peppery spicing, and notes of caramel and brown sugar.

T: Similar to the nose with perhaps a bit more of the malt coming out. Relatively indistinct and mild.

M: Moderate body. Smooth, perhaps a little thin.

O: Good and plenty enjoyable. Towards the bottom in the tasting though.

Beer is brown, slightly lighter than the reserva, and hazy with a thin tan head that leaves a lot of lacing. Carbonation moderate.

Aroma is sweet but overall weaker than expected.

Beer is medium to light in body with some carbonation on the palate, a nice sweetness leads off with some mild roasty bitterness in the back. Overall the beer is well balanced and sweet to the touch with some yeastiness in the midpalate.

Special thanks to Eric at Novare Res Bier Café in Portland, ME... I was the idiot that ordered the spiced Pannepot by accident. I really didn't enjoy that one.... Eric joined us for a couple beers (that's another story) and brought out the Monk's brew "Pannepøt" version which is unspiced...
MUCH BETTER!!!
Pours a deep brown with reddish maroon highlights. Slightly cloudy with a thick and fizzy head that sits atop the brew. This does settle to a thin cap that remains in place.
Aroma is of deep fruits and rich malt notes. Certainly a sense of the yeast and a touch of spice notes... (not like the Fisherman's version)

Deep malts, dark fruits and some brown sugar. Dried dates... black cherry... slight sense of the alcohol.. I was so happy to savor this one after my disappointment with the spiced version..
Luxurious and rich mouth feel. Bold on flavor but delicate on the palette.
Wonderful beer!!

Review written back on January 23, 2011, and recently moved to this entry at the request of the Bros. 2008 bottle split with my good friend and roommate, JustinA1.

Served in a snifter.

Appearance: Creamy, somewhat soapy, tan head resides atop a murky, muddy brown body. Light visibility around the edges. Decent head retention. Spotty lacing.

Smell: Huge dark fruit component: dates, figs, and prunes in particular. The overall smell is pretty tart and reminiscent of a cabernet. Cocoa powder also peeks through. Very bold.

Taste: Prunes, dates, and raisins meet semisweet chocolate and molasses. Tallow and earth come through in a dry, lightly alcoholic finish. I also taste Dr. Pepper, which makes sense given the prune-y flavor. Nicely done.

Mouthfeel: Big and syrupy with moderate carbonation and a semi-dry finish. Flavors stick to the palate deep into the aftertaste.

Drinkability: Really solid across the board without being fantastic in any one category (I'd honestly give all 4.25's if I could). Definitely worth a try.

11.2oz bottle received via trade with kmpitz2. Thanks for the opportunity.

Poured into a Rapscallion glass, forming a 1/4" tan head over the barely translucent cloudy dark reddish brown brew. Head is quickly down to an uneven skim of bubbles, with average lacing. Aroma is fruity, spicy, bubblegum, and dark malts, with alcohol pervasive throughout. Taste follows the nose, spicing, malt sweetness, light fruitiness. Alcohol more evident in warmth than flavor. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, and wow, is it drinkable. Still liked the US version better though.

A 330ml bottle of 2006 vintage, served at cellar temperature and poured into a tulip glass

A - Poured a very dark brown, almost a cola like color with a very hazy and cloudy appearance pretty much obscuring everything inside and making it look a very thick consistency. A very nice three finger high head of tan colored lace came flying up to the top. Very active on the pour would be an understatement, this thing was all over the place. Almost came out of the top of the glass. After a few more minutes, it finally settled down and began to fold in on itself and become more of just a thin half-inch layer across the top. Tons of spider web like lace coating the inside of the glass, leaving tons of dripping lace. Hard to tell how much carbonation there was as it was just way to hazy. Some small amount of sediment visible on the bottom of the glass, which did not really move much, sort of just hanging around on the bottom of the glass for the duration of the session.

S - The aroma was very varied, deep and complex with different hints and small nuances of smell coming through at various different times during the course of the session. The first thing I was able to pick up with a very nice dark fruity aroma. Lots of raisins, figs, plums, and even a touch of grape showing up in here. Very well mixed and balanced between them but leading more toward the sugary notes as it started to warm up. Lots of spice was evident as well right from the start. A sort of odd nutmeg like spice along with a touch of cinnamon, and sugar. Some aromas of oak or other wood like characteristics starting to come through now as well. The profile is really starting to thicken up now and get a bit complex on me. Some light grassy like smells along with touches of earthy grains all floating around in there as well. Overall really quite full and at the same time very well balanced. Major factor here was the raisin like fruits that were the only constant in the aroma the entire time.

T - The first sip of this just started to bring on wave after wave of thick evolving flavor that really was showing off quite well and became increasingly more complex with each and every sip. The first notes that came across were very rich, sugary notes of raisins, which were just a wonderful way to start off the whole thing. Deep dark fruity flavors were the norm on this was with prunes and figs lining up behind it, quickly delving it deeper and deeper. A very strong presence of sugar was next up, really pushing through and drying to lighten it up. A touch of something sour playing around in the back, and just briefly showing up in the flavor before diving back down and out of site again. Rolling on some nice earthy, oak like notes starting to come now with spices becoming more and more dominant. Cinnamon and nutmeg, even some all spice and a hint of banana keeping developing it further. The finish brought everything back together again and just kept evolving it and drying you out, making you come back and get another sip so that you could bring it back to where it was before. Really, no hint of any kind of alcohol in this one, which to be honest was remarkable for something that should have been so big. Overall, I was quite pleased with the overall flavor and thought that it really developed quite well.

M - This was a very thick ale, not quite full bodied, but damn close and it had such a luscious and creamy smooth body that it was really a pleasure to take each passing sip, as each one was better then the one before that. Really a tremendously good beer here. The carbonation held up excellently and really pushed the entire thing into overdrive, allowing the flavors to really pop and explore the full range of possibilities. Great smooth finish, though not intensely dry, it was more sugary and long flavors of spice persisted for a good long time afterward.

D - Now see this category can become tricky at times only because you get the situation where something is so incredibly drinkable, but at the same time, it has a high ABV so it leaves you in the situation of what to do, In this case the answer was simple, you just keep drinking. It was really just that easy to do. There was just no hint of any kind of alcohol in this whatsoever and the flavors were so rich and bold, with such and in-depth and wonderful profile that it was truly hard to say no to this one. I could have easily had another without any incident, it was just that good. So smooth and delicious.

Overall, I thought this was a really great Belgian ale. The flavors were rich and pure, mingling so well and cross such a wide range of style that it was almost impossible to nail down where it was coming from .A deep dark ale; this one would surely please anyone who gives it a try. Does it live up to the hype? I will let you decide that, my feelings are kind of mixed on the subject personally, but one thing for sure, it is damn good.

The beer pours a medium brown color with a khaki head. The aroma is brown sugar along with caramel malt and dark fruit. The flavor is very fruity: cherries, plums, raisins. There is also some lightly roasted, caramel and toffee malt. Overall the beer is pretty sweet. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

So glad I finally found this. Old Fisherman's Ale is my favorite Belgian beer to date, but I haven't had one that wasn't infected in quite some time. I wish I knew what the difference between these two was.

2007, poured into a Duvel tulip.

Warm, hazy, cola brown that only allows light through the top and edges. The head is the color of pale malt. Pretty good retention, but not much lace.

This smells just as good as Fisherman's. Raisins, candy, nuts, chocolate covered fruit. Sweet rummy booze underneath. Somehow this brings me back to childhood, is that bad?

This tastes very similar to Fisherman's as well. I notice much less spice and more Sherry. The raisiny malt seems more toasted or caramelized. Same lack of hops and almost over the top sweetness that makes it great.

Smooth, creamy, tiny bubbles.
I really need to try this next to Fisherman's. Best quads ever.

2007

Pours a dark brown color with a creamy tan head that quickly fades down to a light ring and leaves a moderate amount of lacing.

Strong aroma of dark cherries, figs and raisins upfront. Some vanilla, toffee, and licorice also show up in the background.

Taste immediately starts again with the dark cherries followed closely by notes of caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and more dark fruit. Hints of brown sugar and honey show up in the finish.

Medium body with a very smooth mouthfeel. Overall, very flavorful and an amazingly easy drinker. No indication whatsoever of the 10% abv.

2007 bottle labelled Pannepeut Vintage poured into my Chimay goblet. I'm super stoked to have this brew.

I pour it slowly making sure to not get too much yeast and sediment in the glass. There's good carbonation but a head doesn't really form. What little head there is quickly dies away to islands in the middle. Color is good. Hazy brownish

Smell is sweet but subdued. And the taste? Divine. Absolutely satisfying. Sweet like the nose. There are hints of figs and prunes. Slight smokiness lurking way in the background. This is amazing

Mouthfeel is pretty decent. For 10%, the booze is fairly well hidden. However, because of the carbonation, I couldn't drink more than one. That being said, would I buy this again and drink it? Absolutely. This is a great beer. If you find it, buy it. Cheers!

What an ale!!! The last time i was in Oostvleteren i met Carlo from the Struise brouwers and i asked him for a beer which can be compared with the Westvleteren 12. He advised me this bottle to try.

I let the bottle come to rest for at least two months and tonight i decided to open this beer.

Poured in a Maredsous chalice (sorry Urbain and Carlo, i will buy a Struise glass coming monday) the head is not very strong which is a pity, i like a nice head. The beer itself is very darkbrown, so dark that the cabonation is invisible.

Very good smell, pleasant and with a bit of spice in it, sweet like caramel.

The taste is really exceptional, better than the Rochefort 10 which i drank after this one.

With a more than good mouthfeel and an exeptional drinkability i am glad i will visit the guys from the Struise next week.

A bottle of the 2007 vintage poured in a snifter glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: As poured the beer is a clear chestnut brown color with a ¾" off-white head that soon recedes to a nice thin layer of foam and leaves patches, legs and speckles of lacing for much of the beer.

Smell: The aromas are caramel and dark fruits (prunes and plums with a hint or two of cherries).

Taste: As predicted by the nose, the flavors include plums and prunes layered over the sweet malt and caramel backbone. Some of the sweetness may be contributed by the high alcohol but there is neither burn nor heat. What hop character that is detectable seems slightly herbal and the bitterness is very restrainted.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is medium to full-bodied and a bit creamy with some gentle continuous carbonation. The finish is medium length, begins with the malt sweetness and eventually tapers off to a very light dryness with hardly any bitterness at all.

Drinkability and Overall Impression: I've enjoyed this beer and find it nicely drinkable. At this ABV one a night is just fine but I'd be happy to sample this one again. My overall impression is of a well made beer that has a very nice balance and lots of interesting flavors coming and going in each sip.

Got as partial payment for some work for a Belgian Beer store.

Bottle says Pannepeut 2007 Vintage.

Pours light head into a Sam Adams US beer glass.

Dark beer with a great deep nose of dark Belgian greatness. Its got a slight hop scent mixed with dark chocolate and malt. Smells awesome. Taste is deep dark fruits and bitter chocolate and caramel with brown sugar. This is what beer is all about. It pushes the limit of sweetness in beer but still holds it own. Not cloying. It is creamy and malty.

What a kick ass beer. Too bad I cant go buy more down at the beer shop. I am going to miss her.

Bottle direct from Belgium and poured into a Captain Lawrence tulip.

Pours a light copper color with a good, though slightly short-lasting, white head. Good spotty lacing on the sides of the glass and a collar throughout. The nose strikes me immediately as being pretty light on the dark fruits, with more caramel and malt coming through. Aside from that, a spicy character takes over and really sends a few good notes. Light hops there as well. Different, but quite nice. The flavor is along the same lines--nice light spice with some bready malt and light fruits. Hoppy character is there as well, and then combines quite well with the spiciness to form a beautiful finish. Medium body. Nicely done, Struise.
