Batch No 14.
Ever since seeing Urbain Coutteau at the t'Brugge Beartje the other week, can't get Struise off my mind. Had the impeccable Pannepot a few nights ago, heres to the mighty Albert.
A loud hiss results in dark espresso-tan foam rushing out of my bottle, fresh for sure. Pours a beautiful espresso-pitch black tone. Head is gorgeous, thick rich creamy. A Belgian-esque amount of foam for sure.Really impressive for a 13% stout for sure.
Aromatically ...wow! Liqorice, coffee, chocolate, fig, spiced prunes, rum, raisins, malt, dark bread, deeply roasted coffee.Vanilla, sour-oaky molasses like sourness is appreciated as well. Star anise, pepper and clove come into the mix as well.
After several minutes black grape, and a really nice black-cherry like sourness, adding a distinctive Belgian not come into play, offsetting the rich IRS profile nicely
..as a side note I thought this was in its own category as a Belgian Royal Stout?
Flavor is amazingly smooth, and the alcohol is buried. Cocoa, grape, raisin, cherry, fig, tobacco, bitter cocoa, oak, molasses, pepper, star anise, clove, all mix, but end with a light vinegar-like touch of sourness, Lambic meets RIS finish, that is very nice for my taste. Not cloying in the least, well balanced and conveys a new concept of RIS.
Rather high carbonated for a RIS, and with a sour twist, the mouthfeel is lighter than normal..but I like it. It's a different concept, as Ten-Fidy is a hoppy stout, this is a Belgian-sour-stout if you well.
A critique point is that the flavor is not immensely complex as anticipated, but good nonetheless.
Cheers

At Church Key on tap in a small tulip.

This beer starts out a bit hot but definitely smooths out. It’s a fine beer but there are better in this style. 4.25

A - Black as night with almost no head (tan). Slightly viscous in the glass. - 4

S – Great nose. Coffee and roasted malts. - 4.5

T – A bit hot. Roasted malts but very little coffee when compared to the nose - 3.75

MF – Great mouth feel. Creamy, dry with some slickness. 4.25

In review is a 2010 Vintage.

A - Pours pitch black with minimal carbonation, a light caramel colored lacing ring, and lots of legs when the glass is swirled, very viscous.

S - Dark chocolate cocoa malt predominantly with light cream, lightly toasted caramel, and some mild alcohol, any dark fruit is very subdued in the nose.

T - Nice complexity with layers of different things going on: bitter dark milk chocolate, cream, toasted caramel, plums, dark berries, light char, light dark fruit tartness which adds a nice touch to this wonderfully complex beer.
M - Thick, full bodied, and total velvet on the tongue with a creamy smooth sensation.

O - 13% ABV is deceptive as the warming is ever so slight making this a dangerously drinkable beer. Being it's a 2010, this bottle is very mellow which was expected. World class.

Poured bottle with batch B6BB into Lost Abbey Teku

A-Pours an all black body with a thick creamy brown head.

S-Aroma of dark berries, cocoa, roast, raisins and spices.

T-Taste is fruity yet dry roasted, dark chocolate, raisins, and a sense of vanilla towards the finish. Lovely mocca and cocoa aftertaste.

M-Mouthfeel is well rich body, great balance here. Good carbonation

O-Overall it was well worth the money I paid for this a special 4 of July treat.
