Firstly, I have been anxiously waiting to open this bottle for over a year now. This is the Grand Reserve, and unlike the Old Fisherman's Ale -- which is a vintage beer as well -- this bottle is aged even longer than its younger relative. I have only heard rave reviews about this from friends, so will do my best to rely on my palate, not my conversations or memory.
Appearance - Exceptionally dark. I beautiful creamy head and great retention. Not a lot of head on this beer, but it stays. Light brown/ beige in color. Typical of a Belgian Quad, this dark ale doesn't allow much light through at all.
Smell - Very rich. A plethora of dark, sweet fruits on the nose. Quite a bit of alcohol cuts through, but in a good way. Light cherry and even licorice are present here. Figs and a very, very faint hop aroma.
Taste - Slightly sour. I'm not sure if this is the French oak barrels or the bottle itself. It definitely balances out, though. A nice use of dark candi sugar. Raisin, cherry, caramel apple, blackberry, vanilla, fig, bread and yeast come to mind immediately. A slight hint of toffee can be found in the aftertaste. A little bit of nuts, too. Not much, though, however, they are there. Slightly peppery on the tongue. A nice, rounded woodiness adds an acidic bite to the finish (I assume this is the Calvados?). Brandy or wine can also be noted, although faint. Leaves a subtle, yet shockingly full finish of butter and cream after swallowing.
Mouthfeel - This is where this ale jumps out the most, leaving a thick, buttery layer along the roof of the mouth. The alcohol is hidden quite well. Nicely carbonated. Really >>zaps<< the mouth. When sipping, this beer really stimulates all areas of the palate. Quite smooth and velvety. Very nice.
Overall - Impressively balanced. Not too sure how I feel about the sour oak flavor, or if in part, it has something to do with having a bottle that is already 7 years old and only 10% abv. Again, this could also be a slightly 'off' bottle. Regardless, I certainly enjoy my wine just as much as my beer and would not be surprised if this is finished in recycled wine barrels, similar to the Duchesse de Bourgogne. It definitely has a slight wine-infused quality about it, but at the same time, it really finds its way back to standard Quadrupel territory by incorporating smooth, soft characteristics, along with dark fruits and strong, sugary sweets. Very complex and a must have for any beer lover. Enjoy!
TIP: When opening this reserve ale, I highly recommend thinking more wine than beer. This may help contribute to a better experience overall.

A: Dark ruby color with a one finger beige head that settles rather quickly.
S: Very complex. Vinous fruity flavors (cherries, ripe apples), roasted malts, coffee, hints of oak and lots of spices. Faint notes of sweet licorice and burnt aromas. Hints of chocolate and nougat develops upon swirling.
T: Lively taste with lots of stuff going on. Very complex. Notes of cherries up front, faint tartness, robust oak barrel character, roasted malts, coffee and lots of spices. In the finish there is a tart fruitiness, sweet licorice and herbs. The bitterness is spicy, rather than hoppy. Some alcohol.
M: Smooth like velvet, full-bodied and sophisticated.
D: A great beer. Packed with strong and bold flavors. Maybe it could have been a little more balanced. Nonetheless, highly recommended.

Amber red color with a tan head that quickly dissipates to a ring around the glass. Smell is of green apple, spices, and some wood. Taste consists of caramel, toffee, spices, clove, but this is also very metallic; even moreso than the regular reserva. Light bodied with a rather high carbonation. I'd try this again, but I don't know that I'd seek it out. It seems like I'd just stick with regular Pannepot over any of the reservas. Thanks to pepsican for the sample.

33cl bottle poured into a St. Bernardus chalice. 2005 vintage.
Pours a very dark brown, it's murky and a bit red on the edges. There's no head to speak of, just some light bubbles around the edges, but there was a pop when I opened it. Nose is very rich and malty, it's sweet and boozy. There are dark fruits and raisins, Belgian candy sugar is there as well.
Taste is a bit oaky/woody. There's raisins, sweet caramel malt and some sharp carbonation. There's lots of rich malts, a bit of dark chocolate, it's quite creamy and smooth with a fairly good mouthfeel. You get a tingling on your tongue afterwards from the alcohol and the sweet malts. It is strong and complex, but fairly easy drinking.

11.2oz bottle, fridge temp, poured into a snifter.
appears almost black but is actually a deep ruby color. about one fingers worth of tan colored head, creamy, nice retention and some nice spotty lace. some sediment visible.
initially lots of ripe dark fruits. some alcohol apparent, spicy, flouride like yeast, sweet malts and a bit wine like.
sweet candied dark fruits, dark breads, spicy yeast phenols. not nearly as much alcohol in the taste. some toasty oak comes through, brown sugar and hints of nutmeg and cinamon. comes off very wine like. finsihes with a very nice richness.
very smooth, rich, sweet, full bodied, very nice mouthfeel. carbonation just about right.
definatly one of the best quads ive had. such a nice melding of flavors, age has done this well. id be a little hesitant to buy more because of the huge price tag for one 11.2 oz bottle, but id be very interested to see what further cellaring could do.

Dark brown with auburn and ruby edges and a very thin light brown head that doesn't stay up for too long. This leaves the glass messy with lots of irregular lacing. Appropriate and pretty, though somewhat standard for a beer of this style.
The main elements found in the aroma include dark fruits (raisin, black cherry, fig), along with barrel and some molasses and brown sugar sweetness. I wish everything was a touch more pronounced, but what's here is very nice.
The flavor shines though, significantly more than the aroma. The dark fruit flavors pair magnificently with the oak and molasses sweetness. This is rich, layered, complex, and incredibly drinkable. Zero alcohol presence.
Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Coating.

Had on-tap, full glass at FFF Anniversary Party. 2008 vintage
A - Dark purplish brown and very hazy; so much so that I couldn't see through it. Nice dirty white, frothy head sitting on top
S - Plum and honey with a malt backbone. Also smelled Belgian yeast, cherry, and hints of citrus. Really a dynamic nose where you find something new each time. The nose was definitely subtle
T - Rich dark fruit at first, then noticed plums with a light Brandy flavor. Also, there are hints of sugar and honey. As I continued to drink, hints of oak, port and vanilla came out. Thought this was overwhelmingly complex and deep.
MF - Nice thick stickiness to it. Felt perfectly matched to the beer and its flavor profile
O- overall this is quite simply Amazing. One of the best Belgian beers I've had by far and felt it was way better than than the normal Pannepot

11.2oz brown bottle poured into a chalice.
A: Pours a murky brown. Medium head with great retention and some lacing.
S: Great murky, dank oak. Powerful oak but doesn't cover up that delicious pannet aroma.
T/M: Definitely a tasty spicy pannepot with more ofthe dank oak. Some odd rotten/over-ripenned fruit... Kind of sour? Some licorice kinda flavor. Medium full body with light but assertive carbonation.
D: Drinks nicely but the rotten fruit/sourness is very distracting.

This is a nearly perfect quad—pick this up if you can find it. This is a very complex beer; Belgian yeast, sugar and alcohol are all present. This beer is a sipper, but very easy to drink. I am glad we picked up a few of these in Belgium; I will hopefully get the chance to enjoy one or two more.

Bottle tasted at the Kulminator in Antwerp.
Beer poured a block hole like color, dense, with a tan head, bubbley. The aroma is pleasing to the nose. Oaky, toasted malt yet a bit sweet. Dried fruits in the aroma a bit. The taste is complex to say the least. Up front there are potent spicy notes, banana, corriander maybe, some dried fruits and definite oak tones. The high abv is a bit hidden by the complex flavors but you can still feel it on the back end. A very full bodied beer and definitely worth the wait to try it.

330ml bottle, 2005 vintage, been sittin' on this one for a while - as the temperature outside drops (again), it's lookin' pretty goo-ood!
Plopped unceremoniously into a pint glass, this beer appears a muddled, sediment-specked, over-saturated iced tea hue, with a half finger of anemic, weakly foamy pale beige head, which flattens rather quickly, leaving only that thin physics-endowed default meniscus of lace around the glass.
It smells of vinous raisins, demerara sugar, bittersweet chocolate, root beer, subtle wood aromas - oak, apple, and brandy, with some other dark fruits lurking about. The taste is quite unexpectedly mellow, though this is perhaps because it is spread across multiple levels - a prominent earthy Old World wine essence, sugary dark fruit, overripe bananas, buttery, bready malt, thin molasses, and drying, musty oak notes.
The carbonation is quite diffuse, the body medium-full in weight, but still somehow airy, and the smoothness akin to a pillow, with a hundred of the same piled on top. It finishes sweet and fruity, but with a weighty drying tendency, all well tempered by a defanged Calvados warming.
This just feels like a simmering time bomb, the alcohol in there somewhere, strategizing, scheming beneath the enjoyable barrel-informed fruity malt. Incredibly tasty, subdued, and maybe a little dangerous. Sublimely easy to drink, at least for this one bottle - as that 20-proof ABV would make itself known eventually.

Today I drove to 'Hop duvel' in Gent, Sint-Sixtus in Westvleteren and Deca brewery in Woesten. What a great beer day. The sun was shining and my buddy Ed and I had a Westvleteren 12 in Westvleteren. But to night I am very curios for the Pannepot grand reserva, according to my buddy Thijs ( 'the Brabander'); the best quadrupel he ever tasted. So her I am, ready to take a gulp of this Struise nectar. I am having a 2006 edition, 10% ABV.
A - A black nectar at first sight, but when you hold it against the light a hazy wine red substance without carbonation. The head is off white and slowly retracts until a thin layer remains.
S - A smell of fresh yeast, and faintly some citrus, some alcohol to but again faintly.
T - What a complex brew, the taste evolves during your gulp and when you swallow you feel the warming alcohol. What a balance, it is very hard so separate all the different flavors. I almost have to guess what I am tasting. I'll give it a try; vanilla, wood, raisins, some caramel and brown sugar, bitter but not at all hoppy. The alcohol is present but so nicely blended with the rest of the spices.
M - Nice carbonation not overwhelming, very drinkable liquid, nice taste evolution.
O - A very good quadrupel, not as good as a Westvleteren 12 but definitely worth trying

Case from Roland and Russell. Pours dark colour with dark red highlights and lots of lace, off-white head. Aroma: sherry, ok, manipulated yeast, rich. Mouthfeel is on creamy side, it tastes creamy and a bit sour and oaked, and finishes magnificantly satisfying. Deep and soulful. One of the year's best I have had from 600 beers.
