The 2005 vintage drunk from a chalice. No specific best before date; good forever, right?...:)

A - moderate tan head, bubbly with moderate lacing. Very dark in color (but not as solid as a porter/stout). Lots of sediment in the bottom of the glass and floating throughout.

S - roasted malts with some dried fruit.

T - truly exceptional balance of roasted malts, molasses, slight tobacco and persistent sour fruits. Remarkably little impact from the alcohol.

M - moderately, but appropriately carbonated. The tart aftertaste persists indefinitely.

D - incredibly easy to drink considering the alcohol content. Goes down amazingly easy.

This is an exceptional beer; easily one of the best. (694 characters)

Pours a nice dark purplish brown, topped my a modest light brown head. Retention is fantastic, with a thin, 1/8" remainder lasting for ages.

Incredible aroma, deep, sweet, slightly boozy, and packed with flavors. Dark fruit, grapes, chocolate, with soft vanilla, oak, and tannin on the back-end.

Flavor follows: this brew is just swirling in deep fruit flavors from the first sip - grapes, cherries, and prunes. Huge bready malts - fruit bread, banana bread, whole grain wheat all blended together with syrup into a smoothie. Bitter chocolate and tannins round out the finish.

Despite the high ABV (and associated aroma), this beer is impressively smooth. A touch of foaming at times; a bit lively up forward; a minor amount of alcohol heat around mid-palate and on the finish. Long, lingering wet finish. Thick, smooth, and creamy.

Without hyperbole, this is one of the best beers I have ever had, and made itself known as such from the very first sip. It is sweeter than most traditional Quads, but is an absolute delight to drink.

2010 Vintage - yet another fantastic Belgian brew that shows only improvement over time, with zero negative oxidation effects whatsoever. (1,176 characters)

grand reserva vintage

pours quite still, dark thick cola black. basically no head

sweet dark fruit candy, faint leather, sherry, and plum.

has some oxidation for sure however i do not feel its taking away from the flavors. the sherry flavor is quite nice. well rounded subtle complex dark fruits and rich candy.

mild to moderate carbonation, just enough to liven up the body and the flavors. felt it complimented the flavors perfectly.

old, yes. but still drinking well IMO (479 characters)

Incredibly complex and melded together beautifully, all components- from barrel to fruit, from spice to sweetness, from vinous to malt all fit together in a seamless and decadent taste.

Its deep russet brown is ominously dark, approaching a stout-like austere. With a simmering froth constructing on top, its sultry aromas are bountiful with candied scents of plum, blackberry, raisin and cherry. Further reinforced in its sweetness, light maple and brown sugar wrap the fruit in a cake-like cocoon.

With notions of fruitcake swirling on the palate, a spicy balance introduces red wine, oak, peppercorn, and a supple fennel earthiness. Its full middle lays on the tongue with a boozed sweetness seemingly of rum cake to highlight elements of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Its long and decadent finish is slow to release. As its sweetness gently rolls off the palate, its brandy head builds and those apple influences take hold. Slight numbing warmth and wood spices give a soft dryness to the otherwise savory dessert beer.` (1,018 characters)

2005 vintage.

A - Pours an opaque, near black, brown with an inch of slightly frothy tan head. This falls to a thin layer of the course of a minute. All as expected.

S - Coffee, cocoa, caramel, cinnamon and other spices, cola, dried dark fruit, light grassy hops, a hint of port.

T - Initial dark fruit is moved aside by caramel and cocoa in the middle. Finish is coffee and grassy hops with a background chocolate note in the aftertaste. Also a lingering flavour of sweet wine. Layers of interest and complexity. Delicious.

M - Liquid velvet. Initially full bodied, with a light spritz of carbonation. The bubbles subside for the most part and the mouthfeel takes on a rich, creamy texture. This never becomes overpoweringly syrupy or cloying and the remaining carbonation and hops cleanse the mouth by the finish. Simply perfection.

D - A magnificent brew. Not drastically different from Pannepot (although the Grand Reserva has a more noticeable sour edge from recollection), but that certainly isn't a bad thing. (1,022 characters)

2005 Vintage Best by date December 2012; Sampled September 2008
A vigorous pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip glass produces a tightly packed, initially three-finger thick, beige-tan colored head. The beer is a dark, concentrated plum color with quite a bit of concentrated brown. When held up to the light the beer shows a hazy, dark cranberry hue. The aroma is a mix of dark fruit, sweet spiciness, toasted nut notes and some malty, maillard like, almost oxidation induced umami notes. The nose has specific notes of bergamot, mix with earthy coriander, rich clove, caramelized brown sugar, rich molasses rum notes, light cardamom that gets a bit cola like, as well as rich fruity notes of toasted figs, prunes and caramelized raisins. The finish has a nice toasted whole grain bread note that takes on a certain nuttiness, this last accentuated by a touch of light sherry character. This is definitely a rich smelling brew, lots of concentrated, dark leaning malt notes mix quite well with the soft spice notes.

Quite fruity tasting with a certain sweetness and an off-setting tartness. The finish has a nutty, sherry like edge to it that is definitely signs of oxidation / age, but adds to the complexity instead of detracting. This beer seems to have just started to age a bit around the edges. I lick my lips from the first sip and I get a distinct flavor that is a mix of tart tamarind and brown sugar. Fruit flavors definitely play a role here, more specifically dark fruit notes of concentrated raisins, prunes and a touch of citrus infused figs. Lots of concentrated malt notes intermingle with the fruit; distinct malt notes of molasses, toasted malt in the finish and perhaps a touch of grain astringency, while the intermingled fruit / distinct malt flavors have me noticing notes of dark rum, brandy and some salty tamarind notes. There is definitely a distinct, yet soft tartness to this beer that makes the creamy body and rich mouthfeel seem a bit lighter than it actually is. The oak character is actually quite soft, almost non-existent, though there is just a touch of spicy oak in the finish as well as a touch of a tannic boost. Spice notes play a slightly lesser role in the flavor, but do still contribute notes of vanilla, clean coriander, clove, perhaps a touch of all spice and a finish that has a spicy cola / cardamom note to it.

This seems to be just getting in to its own right now and this, the 2005, vintage probably still has quite a long way before it starts deteriorating; the best by date of 2012 is definitely not a joke. I am really enjoying this beer. The oak character is very soft, which is nice, with the biggest influence being the rum / brandy notes picked up from the calvados cask. This is a very good beer, one which I easily wish I had more than 330ml of; my bottle is gone way to fast leaving me really wishing that I had more. If I could make this better I would add a touch more tartness, the lactic note that is here is quite soft and there is lots of fruit and malt character that could easily balance out a touch more sourness. (3,091 characters)

A: Dark ruby color with a one finger beige head that settles rather quickly.

S: Very complex. Vinous fruity flavors (cherries, ripe apples), roasted malts, coffee, hints of oak and lots of spices. Faint notes of sweet licorice and burnt aromas. Hints of chocolate and nougat develops upon swirling.

T: Lively taste with lots of stuff going on. Very complex. Notes of cherries up front, faint tartness, robust oak barrel character, roasted malts, coffee and lots of spices. In the finish there is a tart fruitiness, sweet licorice and herbs. The bitterness is spicy, rather than hoppy. Some alcohol.

M: Smooth like velvet, full-bodied and sophisticated.

D: A great beer. Packed with strong and bold flavors. Maybe it could have been a little more balanced. Nonetheless, highly recommended. (794 characters)

Amber red color with a tan head that quickly dissipates to a ring around the glass. Smell is of green apple, spices, and some wood. Taste consists of caramel, toffee, spices, clove, but this is also very metallic; even moreso than the regular reserva. Light bodied with a rather high carbonation. I'd try this again, but I don't know that I'd seek it out. It seems like I'd just stick with regular Pannepot over any of the reservas. Thanks to pepsican for the sample. (467 characters)

33cl bottle poured into a St. Bernardus chalice. 2005 vintage.

Pours a very dark brown, it's murky and a bit red on the edges. There's no head to speak of, just some light bubbles around the edges, but there was a pop when I opened it. Nose is very rich and malty, it's sweet and boozy. There are dark fruits and raisins, Belgian candy sugar is there as well.

Taste is a bit oaky/woody. There's raisins, sweet caramel malt and some sharp carbonation. There's lots of rich malts, a bit of dark chocolate, it's quite creamy and smooth with a fairly good mouthfeel. You get a tingling on your tongue afterwards from the alcohol and the sweet malts. It is strong and complex, but fairly easy drinking. (699 characters)

2005 vintage

11.2oz bottle, fridge temp, poured into a snifter.

appears almost black but is actually a deep ruby color. about one fingers worth of tan colored head, creamy, nice retention and some nice spotty lace. some sediment visible.

initially lots of ripe dark fruits. some alcohol apparent, spicy, flouride like yeast, sweet malts and a bit wine like.

sweet candied dark fruits, dark breads, spicy yeast phenols. not nearly as much alcohol in the taste. some toasty oak comes through, brown sugar and hints of nutmeg and cinamon. comes off very wine like. finsihes with a very nice richness.

very smooth, rich, sweet, full bodied, very nice mouthfeel. carbonation just about right.

definatly one of the best quads ive had. such a nice melding of flavors, age has done this well. id be a little hesitant to buy more because of the huge price tag for one 11.2 oz bottle, but id be very interested to see what further cellaring could do. (946 characters)

Dark brown with auburn and ruby edges and a very thin light brown head that doesn't stay up for too long. This leaves the glass messy with lots of irregular lacing. Appropriate and pretty, though somewhat standard for a beer of this style.

The main elements found in the aroma include dark fruits (raisin, black cherry, fig), along with barrel and some molasses and brown sugar sweetness. I wish everything was a touch more pronounced, but what's here is very nice.

The flavor shines though, significantly more than the aroma. The dark fruit flavors pair magnificently with the oak and molasses sweetness. This is rich, layered, complex, and incredibly drinkable. Zero alcohol presence.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Coating.

Had on-tap, full glass at FFF Anniversary Party. 2008 vintage

A - Dark purplish brown and very hazy; so much so that I couldn't see through it. Nice dirty white, frothy head sitting on top

S - Plum and honey with a malt backbone. Also smelled Belgian yeast, cherry, and hints of citrus. Really a dynamic nose where you find something new each time. The nose was definitely subtle

T - Rich dark fruit at first, then noticed plums with a light Brandy flavor. Also, there are hints of sugar and honey. As I continued to drink, hints of oak, port and vanilla came out. Thought this was overwhelmingly complex and deep.

MF - Nice thick stickiness to it. Felt perfectly matched to the beer and its flavor profile

O- overall this is quite simply Amazing. One of the best Belgian beers I've had by far and felt it was way better than than the normal Pannepot (859 characters)

A: Pours a murky brown. Medium head with great retention and some lacing.

S: Great murky, dank oak. Powerful oak but doesn't cover up that delicious pannet aroma.

T/M: Definitely a tasty spicy pannepot with more ofthe dank oak. Some odd rotten/over-ripenned fruit... Kind of sour? Some licorice kinda flavor. Medium full body with light but assertive carbonation.

D: Drinks nicely but the rotten fruit/sourness is very distracting. (518 characters)
