4.9/5  rDev +14%
look: 5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 5 | feel: 5 | overall: 5

A - From a 2006 vintage bottle, pours an opaque dark amber-brown into my De Struise tulip yielding a three-finger thick, pretty, bubbly and creamy tan head that grows slightly after the initial pour, retaining well; it finally settles down to a one-finger thick tan head. (5)

S - Intense nose of dark fruits, caramel, chocolate, alcoholic phenols, oak and bready yeasts (4.5)

T - Intense caramel sweetness upfront with slightly vinous and leathery notes following closely; thick chocolate flavors, molasses and dark fruits with suggestions of raisins, plums and dates, fill the middle with a masterful yet light touch of alcohol; bready malts and spices come through towards the finish which suggested flavors of maple sweetness, raisins, caramel, chocolate and a light touch of oak (5)

M - Luscious full-bodied mouthfeel with a slight syrupy stickiness and a creamy smooth texture; very pleasantly warming as it goes down (5)

D - Godly delectable and complex flavors compounded with a mouthfeel that's kissing perfection, this is a beer that's definitely amongst the few pinnacle selections on my list (5)

Comparing the 2006 Grand Reserva and the 2007 Reserva, oak notes were stronger on the nose for the Grand Reserva and the flavors on the Grand Reserva exhibited vinous, leathery touch remiscent of wine (this is probably due to the barrel aging). Chocolates were also more towards the front, unlike the Reserva (and the regular Pannepot) to form a thicker and more well-blended flavor with the dark fruits, molasses and alcoholic phenols. Over here, the mouthfeel is pretty much perfected at full body and with a light touch of syrupy stickiness.

About half way through my Quadrupel marathon and here's the ordered ranking thus far, starting from the best: 2006 Pannepot Grand Reserva, 2007 Pannepot Reserva, 2006 Pannepot, 2010 La Trappe Quadrupel Oak Aged, 2009 La Trappe Quadrupel, 2009 Ommegang Three Philosophers

Vintage 2008

-Pours a dark reddish-brown with head reducing to fine lacing.

-Delicious aroma of sherry, plum / jammy dark fruit, sweet molasses, beef gravy and cardboard

-The taste is oxidized and one dimensional. Unfortunately that dimension is cardboard. There is a pleasant note of dark fruit finishing with with a hint of soy sauce and bitter malt. An unpleasant aftertaste develops.

-Mouthfeel is silky with very fine, creamy carbonation.

-I think this would have been a very fine beer in its prime. I recently had a 2010 Reserva that rocked my world. This is a shell of that beer. I am giving extra points to the overall score given that opening any beer at this age is a crapshoot and that Pannepot has not disappointed me in the past.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

2005 vintage.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, candied fruit, and slight cardboard aromas. Taste is much the same with candied fruit, caramel, and slight cardboard flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that seems a bit old and oxidized at this point, but it's still fairly tasty as is.

grand reserva vintage

pours quite still, dark thick cola black. basically no head

sweet dark fruit candy, faint leather, sherry, and plum.

has some oxidation for sure however i do not feel its taking away from the flavors. the sherry flavor is quite nice. well rounded subtle complex dark fruits and rich candy.

mild to moderate carbonation, just enough to liven up the body and the flavors. felt it complimented the flavors perfectly.

old, yes. but still drinking well IMO

2005 vintage courtesy of Steve...thank you!

A nice dark brown with a good half inch cap that rings and puddles.

Plenty of wood and wet paper along with tobacco leaf and chocolate. There's a nice roasted coffee here as well that's unexpected.

Interesting quad and not wholly anticipated: coal, dark fruits, figs, and molasses encompassed by a sweet sherry-like sweetness. Red grapes and roasted coffee on the back end with lingering port qualities.

On the low end of carbonation with a moderate body that shows it's age while still holding its ground.

Sophie Marceau...aging but still plenty well put together.
