This 2005 bottle came courtesy of Bermans in Lexington. Pannepot Grand Reserva pours out a dark chestnut color, with just a small amount of white heading. The first thing I get from the nose is brown bread, followed by chocolate, candy sugar, pepper and some stone fruit. The flavor is very jammy, with elements of plum, dark cherry and strawberry. The alcohol is held in check in an incredible way given the 10% ABV. Mouthfeel is the standout here in that it is incredibly smooth and well rounded from first sip to last. I have had many versions of Pannepot over the years, and I have to say that none have impressed me in the way that this one does. It is so damn smooth and complex. It rivals any of the Trappist Quads out there, and surpasses some of them. Despite the steep price tag, this is one to hunt down. I would be interested to see what further aging will do to this beer, but it is drinking wonderfully right now.

2005 vintage courtesy of Steve...thank you!

A nice dark brown with a good half inch cap that rings and puddles.

Plenty of wood and wet paper along with tobacco leaf and chocolate. There's a nice roasted coffee here as well that's unexpected.

Interesting quad and not wholly anticipated: coal, dark fruits, figs, and molasses encompassed by a sweet sherry-like sweetness. Red grapes and roasted coffee on the back end with lingering port qualities.

On the low end of carbonation with a moderate body that shows it's age while still holding its ground.

Sophie Marceau...aging but still plenty well put together.

2005 Vintage, apparently this is the first batch. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice very dark mahogany hue that would be clear if not for how dark it is. Nice half finger light tan head fades to leave a creamy halo and a thin cloud.

S - Aromas of well, an old quad. Definitely oxidation, light caramel, brown sugar, darker fruits, figs, faint vanilla. Like someone else said there is some sherry notes.

T - Taste is figs, oxidation/cherry, with a strong chocolate and coffee finish. Almost port like this is not bad, just not expected. What's really unexpected is the level of chocolate and coffee and lightly sweet dark fruits on the finish. Pleasant.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, slightly silky, alcohol is hidden nice.

O - Overall, perhaps I should have drank this a few years back but still glad I did not. Nice complexity here.

Vintage '05 on the bottle. Pour is deep brown with a tight tan head. Nose has a ton of rich dark malt, figs, brown sugar, red grapes, a bit oxidized, nutty, cardboard, and boozy notes in back. Taste is also a good bit oxidized. The cardboard is strong with the rich malt being faded. Brown sugar and fig with booze in back. The cardboard lingers through the finish. Medium to full body, fairly good carbonation.

330 mL bottle poured into a De Struise tulip. 2005 vintage.

Appearance - Dark brown. Light passes through revealing a tinge or red and some floating bits suspended in the beer. Medium khaki head that resolves into a creamy collar.

Smell - Oxidation lends sherry to the nose. Nothing offensive, but this is getting old. Fruit and caramel malt. Some brown sugar and a hint of darker roasted malts.

Taste - Bright fruitiness up front. Almost a wine-like characteristic. Oak. Again, sherry oxidation flavors. Brown sugar turns into a chocolatey finish and coffee is left in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation. Slickness from the oxidation. Sweet.

Overall - This definitely has its drawbacks. The oxidation doesn't open up any exciting flavors. It's not too old, but it's old. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic and complex beer.
