2005 Vintage, apparently this is the first batch. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice very dark mahogany hue that would be clear if not for how dark it is. Nice half finger light tan head fades to leave a creamy halo and a thin cloud.

S - Aromas of well, an old quad. Definitely oxidation, light caramel, brown sugar, darker fruits, figs, faint vanilla. Like someone else said there is some sherry notes.

T - Taste is figs, oxidation/cherry, with a strong chocolate and coffee finish. Almost port like this is not bad, just not expected. What's really unexpected is the level of chocolate and coffee and lightly sweet dark fruits on the finish. Pleasant.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, slightly silky, alcohol is hidden nice.

O - Overall, perhaps I should have drank this a few years back but still glad I did not. Nice complexity here.

Vintage '05 on the bottle. Pour is deep brown with a tight tan head. Nose has a ton of rich dark malt, figs, brown sugar, red grapes, a bit oxidized, nutty, cardboard, and boozy notes in back. Taste is also a good bit oxidized. The cardboard is strong with the rich malt being faded. Brown sugar and fig with booze in back. The cardboard lingers through the finish. Medium to full body, fairly good carbonation.

330 mL bottle poured into a De Struise tulip. 2005 vintage.

Appearance - Dark brown. Light passes through revealing a tinge or red and some floating bits suspended in the beer. Medium khaki head that resolves into a creamy collar.

Smell - Oxidation lends sherry to the nose. Nothing offensive, but this is getting old. Fruit and caramel malt. Some brown sugar and a hint of darker roasted malts.

Taste - Bright fruitiness up front. Almost a wine-like characteristic. Oak. Again, sherry oxidation flavors. Brown sugar turns into a chocolatey finish and coffee is left in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation. Slickness from the oxidation. Sweet.

Overall - This definitely has its drawbacks. The oxidation doesn't open up any exciting flavors. It's not too old, but it's old. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic and complex beer.

Sent to me by a friend in Calgary. 2005 vintage.

A - Pours the definition of 'murky.' Sort of a muddy brown colour in the glass with a one finger beige. head. Good carbonation. Spotty lace and a film of retention.

S - Aroma is full of leather and molasses up front. Lot's of dark fruit and sugar as well. Mild tart dark fruit or cherry notes. Very interesting and complex aroma unlike anything in a Quad I've smelled.

T - Tart cherry really dominates. Barrel character. Dark fruit is big with some wood. Sugar, woody, mild molasses. Might be a little past it's prime as the mild sourness comes out pretty strong, but it's still enjoyable. Not as good as the aroma, but not bad at all.

M - Nice, mild carbonation, medium to full body and a dry and mildly tart finish with lot's of dryness.

O/D - This is probably a bit oxidized, but still pretty enjoyable. The aroma is quite original and enjoyable with lot's of complexity. You can tell that there was a world class Quad underneath this, but maybe it peaked a few years ago. Still pretty darn good though.

Notes from Kulminator. Vintage 2006. Aged in French oak and finished in calvados barrels for 8 months. A very dusty bottle. Served from a 375ml dusty bottle into a DeStruise chalice.

A- Black with soft white head. Awesome lacing.

S-Apple, chocoalte, caramel, oak, booze, brown bread.

T-Apple, brandy, oak, caramel, maple syrup, chocolate, no booze.

M-Thinning body, very little heat, ample enough carbonation.

O-Incredible. Calvados is there, but light. Drink it now before the Barre disappears.
