Had on-tap, full glass at FFF Anniversary Party. 2008 vintage

A - Dark purplish brown and very hazy; so much so that I couldn't see through it. Nice dirty white, frothy head sitting on top

S - Plum and honey with a malt backbone. Also smelled Belgian yeast, cherry, and hints of citrus. Really a dynamic nose where you find something new each time. The nose was definitely subtle

T - Rich dark fruit at first, then noticed plums with a light Brandy flavor. Also, there are hints of sugar and honey. As I continued to drink, hints of oak, port and vanilla came out. Thought this was overwhelmingly complex and deep.

MF - Nice thick stickiness to it. Felt perfectly matched to the beer and its flavor profile

O- overall this is quite simply Amazing. One of the best Belgian beers I've had by far and felt it was way better than than the normal Pannepot

2005 Vintage, served alongside a 2007 regular Pannepot.

A: Pours a dark brown, but significantly lighter than its non-BA brother. It's got very little head and minimal lacing, both noticeably less than the regular.

S: Smell is very similar to the regular. It's got the same caramel/molasses sweet cola smell, but with a hint of brandy and alcohol in there.

T: While the smells of the two beers are similar, the tastes are quite different. It's noticeably sweeter than the regular one and has more dark fruit flavor - the brandy is there, but definitely doesn't overwhelm the beer like some brandy barrel beers. The caramel malts are definitely still there, but they're more subdued and the roastiness only comes out subtly in the finish. Some oak comes through in the finish as well.

M: The mouthfeel is a bit thinner than the regular and it's significantly less carbonated.

O: Trying this side-by-side with the regular was a very interesting experience. Both beers are excellent, but I'd give the slight edge to the regular due mainly to a slight edge in mouthfeel. I also feel like the sweetness of the Grand Reserva might make it tough to drink more than one bottle, where the regular Pannepot is just so easy to drink. Overall, however, I'm just nitpicking. Both are great beers.

Served in a Duvel tulip glass.

2005 Vintage. Had to finally try this one after thoroughly enjoying the standard and Reserva versions. It pours a dark cherrywood topped by finger of dusty khaki foam. The nose comprises fig, brown sugar, toasted caramel, light oak, very light vanilla, dates, walnuts, dark fruit, very light cocoa, and a small touch of green apple. The taste holds notes of dark fruits, pear, oak, brown sugar, toffee, clove, light vanilla, and light white wine grapes. The fruitiness is a bit off-putting, particularly the sour-leaning pear and spicy grapes. The body is a straight medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a lightly grainy feel. Overall, it's a solid beer, but I think the barrel-aging detracts significantly from the great base by introducing a number of new flavors that clash with the pre-existing ones. Still pretty good, though, interestingly...

This is a 2005 vintage.

Ahhhh the nose is nice. Little boozy hints of whiskey with rich oak and leather-- like my condo: It smells of rich mahogany and leather bound books. Walter Kronkite is a friends of mine... he comes by from time to time.
Little bite of vanilla from the oak... mmmm.
Some spices come through too.
This is oaky and spiced, with boozy vanilla notes.
As far as it goes, I think I prefer the regular Old Fisherman's Ale. I just love that beer.

Flavor is nice-- good finish that holds some sweetness still. Unlike the Reserva, the oaking hasn't entirely dried this beer out-- which I find to be nice.

Anyway... it's good.
Feel is solid. Firm and full body good carbonation.
Drinkability is really high.... but for my money, I'll take the regular version every time. The oaking adds some interesting aspects, but takes away a lot of those dark fruit notes and much of the sweetness that I love in the regular version.

33cl bottle.

It pours a slightly reddish brown with not too much head.

You wouldn't have to tell me this was aged in Calvados barrels. It is full on with the calvados scent. I think it kind of detracts form this brew which is one of the best of all time. There is also a lot of basic dark fruit. Some of the original qualities of the beer have been masked. It still smells pretty good though.

The flavor is rich and complex. Lots of caramel and oak. There is also dark fruit, calvados, and dark malt.

I prefer the Reserva, though this is a fine beer.

2005 33cl into a tulip. Pours a deep black walnut, nice small tan head retained, minor lacing.

Aroma is rich and thick, overly ripe dark fruits about to turn. Plums, tiny brown sugar, oak and a smidgen of a liqueur.

Scrumptious, just what you would want it to be. Smooth in every measure. Figgy, raisins, black cherries and plums, nice barrel contribution with the oak and vanilla subtly obvious. Medium to full bodied mouthfeel.
Warms superbly.

Vintage 2005

A-Pours deep burgundy with 3/4 inch of tan head. Leaves stringy, soapy lacing.

S-Stewed fruit, prunes, milk chocolate, French oak and vanilla extract. Very blunt and flat compared to the non barrel aged Pannepot.

T/M-Thin and mildly roasty, with flavors of milk chocolate and vanilla. Doesn't show its age like I thought it would. Less herbaceous than the regular Pannepot. The finish is dry and slightly boozy.

O-Not all I hoped it would be. You'd never know this was 6 years old. It seems the extensive barrel aging has stripped away Pannepot's nuances, leaving behind a perfectly average quadruppel.

A post-Halloween party treat. 12oz bottle into a large Tripel Karmeliet goblet. 2005 vintage, perfectly good looking bottle, I might add.

A. Fizzy, dark chestnut. Cola - lots of yeast sediment here. Lower tan head, some spotty lace. Lots of bubbles stick to the inside of the glass, again reminding one of Pepsi.

S. Extremely Quaddish, this has it all. Candy-sugar malt, oak, vanilla, phenolic, slightly spicy yeast notes, cola again, toasted, Doppelbock-like bready malts... yes please. Covers all the bases very, very well and is smoothed out and pleasant.

T. Pannepot Grand Reserva is an excellent quad. I left most the yeast in the bottle, and the result is a dark, malt-forward, comprehensive beer, one of the better Quadrupels I've had in some time. The oak is very restrained, but adds (I think) more depth to an already very well crafted beer. While this doesn't break any new ground, Grand Reserva is right up there with the best Quads around. A real treat.

M / O. Thick and syrupy at times, medium-low carbonation and a very long, melanoidin rich and sweet finish make this a winner.
In sum, this is a denser, more rounded out version of the already good Pannepot. Worth $10 a bottle? Yes, at least once.

This bottle is the 2005 vintage and courtesy of sixthglass, thanks Tim!

It pours a muddied and syrupy dark brown, full bodied, with the look of creek water after a good rain. It looks great for the style. The aromas are big and malty. It's very bready and also features raisins, spiced rum, toffee, molasses, cloves, and sweet banana like esters. The flavors are heavy on raisin bread, toffee, smooth malts, molasses, and it finishes with a light yet boozy banana finish. It drinks very full and has a moderate amount of alcohol. It is also exceptionally smooth. Overall this is a fine quad with good complexity and well worth a try.

This 2005 bottle came courtesy of Bermans in Lexington. Pannepot Grand Reserva pours out a dark chestnut color, with just a small amount of white heading. The first thing I get from the nose is brown bread, followed by chocolate, candy sugar, pepper and some stone fruit. The flavor is very jammy, with elements of plum, dark cherry and strawberry. The alcohol is held in check in an incredible way given the 10% ABV. Mouthfeel is the standout here in that it is incredibly smooth and well rounded from first sip to last. I have had many versions of Pannepot over the years, and I have to say that none have impressed me in the way that this one does. It is so damn smooth and complex. It rivals any of the Trappist Quads out there, and surpasses some of them. Despite the steep price tag, this is one to hunt down. I would be interested to see what further aging will do to this beer, but it is drinking wonderfully right now.

33cl into chouffe tulip, 2005 vintage.

A-Dark cola brown with a slow building creamy head. Looks great in the glass.

S- Sweet fruit, plumskin. Some candied brown sugar. Intoxicatingly inviting.

T- The most interesting thing about this beer is how smooth it is. Lots of plum and dark chocolate. The fruit seems a lot heavier and darker than regular pannepot. Not sure if this is due to the age, the oak, or some combination. Figs, dates, and brandy lay on the tongue like a warm fuzzy blanket.

M- Slight warming from the alcohol, So smooth and a perfect body. Cannot improve.

O- I like it better than pannepot, and that's saying something. Struise does it again. I will be going back for more bottles ASAP.

2005 11.2oz bottle.

Appearance: Slow and steady pour into Duvel tulip so as not to shake up the sediment in this guy yields a nice solid finger of mocha colored head. Body is a very dark brown, pushing to black. Decent lacing, particularly for a quad.

Smell: Raisins, plums, molasses, a hint of cinnamon, brown sugar, and brandy.

Taste: Raisins, belgian yeast, oak, brandy, apple, caramel, and a hint of general fruitiness. Wow this guy has so much going on, and it's all blended together beautifully. In fact, I'll go so far as to say this is one of the most wonderfully subtle barrel agings I've ever tasted. Hard to tell if it's the age or the beer itself without a fresh one for comparison, but ultimately it doesn't matter - it's delicious.

Mouthfeel: Strong carb and a full body. The alcohol blends in very nicely and has very little burn for a 10% brandy barrel aged beer.

Drinkability: Moderate - it's enjoyable but a slow sipper.

Overall: What a tasty treat. It was quite the ordeal to get ahold of a few of these guys, but I am extremely happy that I did. Fans of Pannepot and/or quad lovers, this is a must try, and it has held up beautifully.

A: chocolate brown, no head.

S: all the notes of a traditional quad. Maybe a little bit of wood.

T: sweet and medicinal, dark cherries, lots of roasted malt and a bitter charcoal-y finish.

M: medium body, sweet/bitter finish.

O: It's hard to taste the aging here, it is pretty much your standard Belgian quad, not unlike Chimay Grand Reserve.

Today I drove to 'Hop duvel' in Gent, Sint-Sixtus in Westvleteren and Deca brewery in Woesten. What a great beer day. The sun was shining and my buddy Ed and I had a Westvleteren 12 in Westvleteren. But to night I am very curios for the Pannepot grand reserva, according to my buddy Thijs ( 'the Brabander'); the best quadrupel he ever tasted. So her I am, ready to take a gulp of this Struise nectar. I am having a 2006 edition, 10% ABV.

A - A black nectar at first sight, but when you hold it against the light a hazy wine red substance without carbonation. The head is off white and slowly retracts until a thin layer remains.

S - A smell of fresh yeast, and faintly some citrus, some alcohol to but again faintly.

T - What a complex brew, the taste evolves during your gulp and when you swallow you feel the warming alcohol. What a balance, it is very hard so separate all the different flavors. I almost have to guess what I am tasting. I'll give it a try; vanilla, wood, raisins, some caramel and brown sugar, bitter but not at all hoppy. The alcohol is present but so nicely blended with the rest of the spices.

M - Nice carbonation not overwhelming, very drinkable liquid, nice taste evolution.

O - A very good quadrupel, not as good as a Westvleteren 12 but definitely worth trying

A: Deep brown, bordering on black with an impressive beige head. Lots of lacing.

S: Cinnamon and gingerbread with sweet malt. Prune blends with plum and light oxidation. Apple brandy is evident but faint. Smells nice.

T: More apple brandy in the flavor than the nose. Luscious dark fruit notes remind me of prune, plum, and grape. Rich caramel and light pepper-like phenols.

M: Upper full in body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Really nice stuff. A pleasure to try.

O my God! What is this for a brew? I know almost all Struise beers but never had this one. Generously gift of my alltime beerbuddy Matt, CRooney5787. I owe you one Matt!

2005 vintage like the most. Poured in my Struise glass this beers looks like all Struise beers; fabulous. Urbain not only makes them very tasty but also very good looking.

Deepbrown colour and a four finger head which leaves nice lacing in the glass.

Smell is not as overwhealming as the Pannepot but absolutely great.

And then the taste; sheer heaven. Alcohol is well hidden and the taste is between the Pannepeut and the Pannepot, a bit less spicy.

This has to be one of the best beers i have ever drunk...

I have to review this one cause i drank a 2005 bottle yesterday. Now this beer is about 8 years old and it just becomes better and better. Wow!

2006 vintage. 11.2 oz bottle into a chimay goblet. Slow gush over. Not a lot of sediment in the glass/bottle.

A - Dark cola brown body and a khaki head that leaves some edging and lacing. Looks like all the other pannepot's I have tried.

S - Candied figs, brown sugar, molasses, spice, yeast and a light alcohol burn. There are faint charred oak and vanilla notes.

T - Unbelievably rich and smooth mouth feel with the perfect amount of carbonation, even being 5 years old. The taste is phenomenal. Dark caramelized fruits, brown sugar and light spices. Barrel notes that actually blend in and accommodate the other flavors. The aftertaste is somewhat savory. Alcohol is slightly warming.

O - This beer was amazing. Certainly the best quad I have ever had. I drank a 2008 reserva last night and found the earthy raw oak notes to be a bit distracting. This perfected that fault. The barrel notes are so smooth and delicate and do not over power whatsoever. My favorite pannepot variation for sure.

2005 Reserve. Got this as an extra in a trade a little while ago. Thanks alpineclimber!

Poured in to Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a very dark amber colour - completely opaque - with one finger of light brown head that slowly disappeared. Some good lacing on the glass.

S - Intense sweetness up front with notes of dark caramel, brown sugar and toffee. Dark fruit notes compliment the sweetness.

T - Extremely sweet. Lots of brown sugar, toffee and dark caramel. Some spice and yeast notes come through as well. I don't pick up the oak at all.

M - Medium body; light carbonation.

O - This was extremely sweet - to the point that I could not finish it. It was enjoyable for about a third of the glass and then became too much for me to drink.

2005 vintage.

Beer is a very dark brown, almost black, with a thin tan head that is quite active: lots of little bubbles furiously exploding. Minimal retention and lacing.

The smell is fantastic, very warm and enveloping. Oak, sweet malt, and a hint of cocoa. Has a bit of a smoky scent, slightly roasted.

The oak is quite present in the taste, coupled with a bourbon-like flavour. A sweet caramel flavour is present throughout. A hint of dark cherry occupies the background. A slightly roasted character is present as well. Alcohol is noticeable but not overdone.

Mild carbonation, medium to full bodied beer.

A very, very nice beer. The oak barrels really leave their mark, and it works very well. Has quite a different taste than the classic quads, but is an excellent beer. However, I do find that it is a bit rich- hard even to finish a regular bottle of.

330ml Bottle, Poured into my Duvel Tulip. 2005 Vintage.

Appearance: Very dark reddish brown, little to no head, just a small cap which remains throughout the beer. Very nice lacing.

Smell: Incredible, one of the best smelling beers I’ve ever had, highly complex, sweet dark fruit, vanilla, hints of brandy. As it warms the aromas continue to unlock, the vanilla strengthens as does the alcoholic character of the brandy.

Taste: So much flavor, the Belgian candy sugar, the Belgian yeast, the incredible dark fruit flavors. Then as the beer warms the vanilla and oak flavors intensify. Nice warmth on the finish. This beer is best served “slightly” chilled then experienced as it changes while warming. Exceptional work of art from De Struise.

Mouth feel: The barrel aging tends to thin the beer slightly; however, this beer still held up very well with solid body. Extremely smooth.

Overall: Incredible, glad to have more in the cellar. I’m looking forward to trying later vintages because this 2005 is going to be very tough to beat.

2006 vintage
Look: the beer pours a dark-brown color with a medium head.
Smell: Sweet caramel, brown sugar, malts, Belgium yeast, dark fruits (figs and raisins), nuts, light spices and Madera wine.
Taste: Malts, dark fruits (figs, and a lot of raisins again), grapes Belgium yeast, oak, bourbon, Madera, brown sugar and spices. The sweetness and spices are perfectly balanced.
Mouthfeel: a medium body, medium carbonation.
Overall: Fantastic brew. Quite a bit different from the 2005 version I had some weeks ago though (that one had much more red fruits in the taste). What an amazing brew, leaving you to want more!

This is the 2005 vintage. After enjoying the Pannepot, Pannepeut and Pannepot Reserva over the course of the past 8 months or so, I couldn't wait to open this one up as well. I had no idea what the difference was between all of these brews until I had them in hand and could enjoy them and read the bottle descriptions. Until today, I had no idea that the Grand Reserve spent nearly 2 years aging on wood. For the first 14 months it was aged on French Oak and was finished on another 8 months of Calvados.

Poured into a cervoise, this brew appears a hazed color of brown. When held to the light, it displays some ruby coloration through the body and some lighter brown almost orange hints through the edges. A creamy finger of tan head appears across the top and slowly recedes leaving a patchy web of lacework on the glass. The cap retains fairly well with no assistance needed to revival.

The smell of this brew initially is very sweet with a strong scent of belgian candy sugar. I believe the first words uttered from my mouth were: hmm alcoholic candy. More whiffs bring out subtle hints of spices like cinnamon and a bit of caramel. As the brew warms up, a scent of green apples comes to mind coupled with brandy. That apple and brandy combination mixed with caramel and sweetness is very enjoyable through the nose. I find myself spending an unusually time enjoying this brews aroma and not even caring about diving into it's taste. As it comes up to temperature, some of that spicy 10% abv finally starts to shine through with a slight burn to the back of the nose. The increase in temperature also elludes to minor notes of vanilla, woodsy notes from the oak aging and a bit of a slight tangy aspect. All of this comes together to form a fantastic range of depth and enjoyment.

The taste of this brew follows in the footsteps of the aroma. This first notes are that of sweet belgian candy sugar which has a very minor spiced element somewhat like cinnamon but not immediately identifiable as such. The cinnamon is subtle enough that it accents the slight belgian yeast spiciness that is also evident. Through the middle of this brew are notes of caramel malt intertwined with the belgian candy sugar which imparts a minor toffee, almost toasted grain flavoring. It finishes with an slight indication of the oak aging, tasting of vanilla and lightly woodsy. In the aftertaste is a minor herbal touch of hops still present after 6 years of aging, very nice. Late in the aftertaste is a mild lingering flavor of apple and pear skins.

This is a brew that just wont quit, just when you think you got it nailed down and you picked up on everything it has to offer, it shows you more. There is a bunch of depth to this brew to savor and enjoy. The alcohol is initially well balanced and countered by the residual sugar, but as it warms up it gets a bit boozy and the 10% abv is wide out in the open and not hidden at all. This is medium to full bodied leaning more towards full than medium. It's light to moderate carbonation is perfect to give some bubbly life to this brew but not distract from the deep rich flavors. This is a fantastic sipper, among the best I have had not only from struise but across the board in the quad category.
