pours a cloudy, dull yellow tone while yielding an offwhite 1" head. slowly fades to a lasting cap; decent lacing. nose is delivers a smattering of fruits: apple, maybe pear, and grape that combine with spice and belgian yeast to give this beer a rather interesting (in a good way) aroma.

flavor mostly follows the nose. very fruity - the above-mentioned plus a little more citric than what i picked up in the nose (esp orange). very good: fairly complex and enjoyable. medium bodied mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

overall i'm enjoying this a good deal. the more i drink it the more i seem to like it. not world class but very impressive.

Poured into a LA snifter. Lot C with an 8 and a 10 highlighted, whatever that means.

4.0 A: Deeply hazed orange plum color. Three fingers of beige, frothy head. Retention is very good and a good bit of lacing is left.

4.0 S: Plenty of spices in this. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of clove. Light pepper from the yeast. Currants, plums, figs, raisins, and dates. Lightly bready malts with a moderate sweetness.

4.0 T: Tastes like the nose. All the spices mentioned. All the fruits mentioned. The two components work well together. Lightly bready, sweet, with a mild bitterness.

4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Could be a bit spritzier and creamier, but good enough.

4.0 D: Solid beer. Great integration of spices and fruits.

11.2 oz bottle, lot C-8-10, poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a hazy dark orange color with a finger of off-white head, leaves little lacing.

S- Lots of fruit (apples and peach) and red wine, some yeast and candi sugar. Some oak aroma mixed in with the red wine.

T- Starts out a bit sweet with peach, apple and candi sugar. Spicy Belgian yeast, eventually fades into a vinous, woody finish.

M- Medium to full body, smooth feel, very very dry finish. Alcohol is incredibly well hidden for 10% ABV.

O- An awesome beer, really tasty and easy drinking for such a strong brew, I'd definitely pick this one up again.

11.2oz bottle (No. 11; lot C - 8 - 10) into a tulip. Pours a honey amber w/ some chunks, despite a pretty careful pour. 1-finger soapy white head, minimal carb.

Aroma is sweet candi sugar, dried apricots, butterscotch, some alcohol.

Taste is sticky sweet, fruity, with an earthy quality. Not cloying but a little caramelly, malty.

Mouthfeel is buttery smooth w/ a pretty clean, semi-dry finish.

Overall this was a little sweeter/fruitier than I like my BSPAs, but still a tasty, well-crafted beer.

Bottled August 2010, so I gather that makes this port-barrel aged.

Pours a dark amber, almost a brownish-orange. A fairly small off-white head on top, despite a fairly vigorous pour. Head begins to dissipate fairly quickly.

Smell is interesting. A mix of sweet, bready malt, spices (ginger and others I can't quite identify) and light fruits (orange, apple). All quite smooth and integrated. I can't say that the port barreling is noticeable from the nose.

The taste, however, does reveal the port flavour. Red grape and vanilla join the bread, spices and apple of the nose. Quite complex. Alcohol is noticeable, particularly in the finish.

The alcohol aftertaste is a negative as far as feel goes. Beer is otherwise full bodied, low carbonation, chewy.

Overall, an interesting and enjoyable beer. Certainly very different from many others in the BSPA category. Hard to pigeonhole!

Lot C: Bottled August 2010
Apparently this was aged in a port barrel.

APPEARANCE: Pours a three finger, medium looking, fluffy, white head with great retention. Tenne orange in color, hazy, with lots of carbonation evident. Head eventually fades to a thick foam cap that remains the whole time and leaves some nice lacing down the glass. Like the regular version, this is a very nice looking brew.

SMELL: Mild nose of pale malts, touches of green fruit and a bit of tartness. Quite boring and mute in comparison.

TASTE: Much different than the regular version. Pale malts, wood and vanilla notes for sure. Sweet vanilla cream with a spicy and yeasty finish. A little one dimensional perhaps. Mild but lingering aftertaste of oak, vanilla and some spice on the palate. A touch of alcohol lingers as well.

PALATE: Medium body and higher levels of carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down fine with a scratch at the swallow and finishes rather dry on the palate. Good feel, though a touch too much burn perhaps. Slightly higher carbonation than the regular bottle.

OVERALL: Not nearly as complex and enjoyable as the regular version. The oak aging is definitely noticeable, but it has mellowed out the flavors and made it somewhat one dimensional. I would take the regular version over this nine times out of ten. Regardless, this was a fun comparison.

You can't beat the opportunity to enjoy some brews in the company of the person responsible for their creation. Urbain described Tsjeeses '10 reserva as the port barrel aged version which is fermented 3 times. (Base yeast strain, with stone fruits and again in the bottle after barrel aging.) Another little known fact is thay every other year the barrels are switched from port to bourbon. IE: '10 is port, '11 is bourbon, '12 will be port again, etc.

The brew appears a clear amber. Quite atteactive with a white froth sitting atop. Patchy lace sticks to the glass. The head retains throughout and is effortlessly revived with a light swirl.

The smell is sweet and floral with the includion of the previous mentioned stone fruits. A mild clove and yeast presence adds character through the middle with a hint of orange flesh. Mild vanilla and oak are present blending this out with a pleasant sweetness to the aroma. Very well balance and enjoyable sweet smelling aromatics here.

The taste includes clove and a bit of mild fruity accent. Very well hidden alcohol inclusion. Some spiced aspect like cinnamon and vanilla with mild orange is in the aftertaste. The barrel aging is evident with a mild tannic and musty barrel flavor but the candied sweetness smooths everything out.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. The alcohol is masterfully integrated. This is 100x better than I remember the base beer being. I need to get some more of this to have a comparison between the different barrels.

11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into an EKU 28 snifter in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Expectations are merely average; I had the Tsjeeses (regular) last night and was disappointed. I usually love Struise but the Tsjeeses just didn't do it for me. "TSJ No. 11" Lot C 8/10. Acquired at Wally's Wine in Westwood, California. I don't recall the cost.

Served refrigerator cold and side-poured.

A: Pours a one finger head of nice cream, good thickness, and good retention - especially considering the high ABV. The head is a little darker than I remember the Tsjeeses being, a good sign. Colour is an orange marmelade. Nothing strikes me as unique or special.

Sm: Orange fruit esters, a floral hop aroma, biscuity yeast, and clean malts. A mild strength aroma.

T: Nicely yeasty, with some light orange esters alongside clean malts with a spike of floral hops. Any mild hop bitterness is concealed by the malts. Some herbs and spices come through. Mild layering, but nothing impressive. Nicely balanced and built, if timid. Complex enough. The yeast is lovely.

Mf: Smooth and wet, with enough coarseness to bring out the flavours. Neither too thick nor too thin. Adequately carbonated; I'd say it's spot on. Complements the flavours well, but doesn't feel tailored specifically to them. Delicate and silky.

Dr: Incredibly drinkable for the high ABV; dangerously so perchance. I like it. It doesn't feel anywhere near as hoppy as the Tsjeeses, which is a definite improvement. Hides its ABV incredibly well.

33 cl bottle poured into tuliip. Best by 16/11/16. Off white soapy head and lacing. Golden/amber in color. Aroma includes malt sweetness, some alcohol heat, some spicing, can't identify. Taste of sweet malt and molasses, again, mild spicing and smooth drinking. Caramel notes.

11.2oz from SteveFinny (lovely gift, thanks Steve) split two and half ways.

I have to say, I know this is the beer I'm drinking, but based on other reviews I'm not sure what the major difference is.

The pour is as described, red/red ale, off-white topper. Not sticky at all, leaves only traces of lacing.

This smells smoked. I split it three ways and we all thought "wait it this a smoked beer"? but nothing seems to mesh with that. Otherwise a bit of white wine, some wood, and the usual assortment of spices.

Tart flavors immediately dissuade the thoughts that this was a 'smoked beer'. A bit of sucking on the brown sugar cube, a good about christmas cheer in the spices and faint vanilla notes. More yeast/bready. A bit of dark or candied fruit but the brown sugar sweetness is the most prominent.

I know others have written that there is some 'funk' here, but I don't find funk so much as characteristics of wine. The underlying thin wine notes help bring this together and keep it from being to sweet. With the smoke in the nose it's an assault on all your senses.

This is exceptionally enjoyable. There is a mildness to it that I don't typically find in Belgians which I'm enjoying. The mouthfeel is still solid enough to fit the stlye and the spices finish crisply.

Strange color, I’ll call it a dirty gold. A cross between orange, gold, copper and brown, with floaty particles. Offwhite head.

Smells like an American pale ale and a Belgian pale ale had a child. Unique. Grassy and citric, with some honey and alcohol.

Lots of honey and some orange. Malty. A bit of alcohol. Reminds me of a Sam Adams Wee Heavy. Actually tastes like a lager.

Way too sweet for me. Cloying. Not enough bitter to offset. I’m not a honey fan and this does little for me. There is no transition from sweet to bitter, it happens all at once. Didn’t get the dry finish, the cloyingness draped my tongue.

This didn’t work for me. Simply too sweet for me. Not at all easy to drink.

A - Pours a clear dark amber with a towering few of inches of thick off-white head. Small, lively bubbles of carbonation mean it takes some time to fall away. A good looking brew.

S - Pear drops, medicinal phenols, peach, plum, sweet wine, vinous notes at the back. There is quite a lot in there without the aroma being particularly bold. Good nonetheless.

T - The start is sweet stone fruits with caramel joining in the middle. Medicinal phenols and a bit of alcohol heat pick up towards the end. The warming booze stays around in the aftertaste along with some breadiness and herbal hops/drying vinous flavours in the background. This is a young example so the alcohol may well even out if cellared, although to be clear it doesn't taste near its 10% ABV.

M - Persistent, tingling carbonation keeps the body feeling medium before finally fading towards the end of the drink. This allows a more creamy presence to evolve. A refined experience.

D - I really couldn't put this down once I started drinking it, even with the boozy element making itself known in the taste. I think the standard version is superior, but this is an exquisite beer.

A: Pours clear with the color somewhere between amber and ruby with a thin off white head. The thin head actually was retained throughout my enjoyment of the beer. Minimal lacing.

S: Slight amount of alcohol burn in the smell, though not unpleasant. Hints of oak, spices, and apple. Overall not a very strong aroma.

T: Lots of oak in the flavor with hints of alcohol, spices, and some fruit. Slight hints of smokiness or iodine/band-aid taste.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Not really what I was expecting for the style and not something I would hurry out to try again. Very complex aromas and taste but not all that enjoyable or easy to drink.

A: The beer is very hazy red in color and has some brownish hues. It poured with a thin off white head that quickly died down but left a thin, dense head covering the surface.
S: There are very light aromas of alcohol, apple cider, oak and spices in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of apples, oak and spices and a bit of sweetness and some hints of smoke.
M: It feels medium-bodied and relatively smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The alcohol is well hidden in this beer. It is rather unique and makes for an interesting beer to sip during the holidays.
