Yet another insane draft offering at Local Option in Chicago, my last review from that epic tasting.
Served in a snifter, black as night. The head was fairly small, very dark toffee color. No lace.
Smells of really heavy rich coffee beans. Dense and muted at times, the malt provides a bitter roast and burnt toast aroma. Heavy hopping is detectable as the beer warms.
Bitter black espresso makes up the majority of the flavor. I love a good coffee beer, but this one lost the sensual subtlety of a well-done coffee beer and continued down the road into a bitter shot of espresso - only there for aroma and caffeine. Lots of strong pine character from the hops as well. There's some dark chocolate on the finish, but I would have jumped at a little real sweetness - this was closer to something that was at least 85% cacao.
Dry, dry, dry. Medium bodied but very dense. An interesting beer, but one was my limit.
Additionally, out of all the beer on tap that day, this was the most expensive (that includes LA Brandy AS, Cantillon, other Struise offerings, etc). I remember because I was floored when I saw I was charged $14 for the snifter when the check arrived. Probably not something I'd pay for again.

Bottle from the local shop popped right after an infected BD3: Black Mes. This one is another gusher. Pours pitch black with a small mocha colored head into my mini snifter. A somewhat metallic aroma with cardboard, roasty chocolate, and, yes, more sour apple as in the Black Mes. F this. Flavor is sour apple cardboard with no trace of coffee, and maybe just a hint of chocolate. Medium mouthfeel with lowish carbonation but on the thinner side relative to what was expected. This seems both infected with bacteria and a good bit oxidized. Complete garbage. Sad face.
