Notes/Commercial Description:
"Black Damnation II is yet another blend with the use of Hel & Verdoemenis from Brouwerij De Molen. This time even more complex than BD I.

50% of Black Albert was used that matured for a while on whole coffee beans out of a craft Columbian coffee plantation. 25% of H &V was used that aged for 6 months on JD barrels. Another 25% of Cuvée Delphine was used."

Bottle pour at Shelton Brothers The Festival 2014 held at Crafted in San Pedro, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coffee bean, and dark fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, coffee, and slight smoke flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is quite boozy but has a nice mix of cocoa and coffee qualities.

Serving type: bottle.

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a mocha (of course) colored head; stickage is not great for a Belgian style but it does settle down to an archipelago; lots of dotty lace, however

Smell: Coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and cherry tones

Taste: Fruity, out the outset, with a melange of date, prune, cherry and currant flavors; coffee tones build in the middle, along with a developing dark chocolate character; somewhat boozy, after the swallow, with oak, Bourbon and vanilla tones developing; a nice blend of all the flavors brings home the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate to high carbonation; a very typical Belgian stout mouthfeel

Overall: A wonderful blend of flavors; very complex and a worthy beer from this great brewery

750ml silkscreen bottle poured into a De Struise Black Damnation tasting glass. Enjoyed on 8.30.14, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a jet black color, thick, opaque texture with a finger or so of caramel head, thick but with some larger loose bubbles that has decent retention and leaves some spots of lace. The aroma is of coffee, rich chocolate, dark malted grain, bourbon, stone fruits and some subtle but interesting belgian yeast. The flavors match well, nice roasted coffee, bittersweet dark chocolate, mild bourbon and oak, pitted stone fruits, licorice, molasses, rich grains but with some chalky and ashy characteristics at the finish, light fruity yeast components as well. It's really complex which I like and it definitely evolves well as the beer warms to room temperature. The body is very lively, coating and rich, but bubbly with higher than expected carbonation that finishes really easily.

Verdict: A very delicious stout from De Struise, certainly a Mocha Bomb with plenty of coffee and chocolate that brings out many other interesting complexities. The higher than expected carbonation did throw me for a bit, but it doesn't take away from the beer too much. As a side note, the leftovers of this bottle were reduced with garlic and onion for a BBQ sauce that turned out quite well.
