Inky black with a small, rich and creamy tan head. Good head retention. Very nice.

Intense coffee aroma. Charry roast and lovely tobacco aroma. Deep and complex bitter chocolate. Alcohol. So complex and so good.

This is why I love beer. Intense. Big tobacco and roast flavour. Raw coffee. Touches of oaken whisky notes probably associated with the alcohol flavours. Rich espresso. Light sweetness that gets sucked away quickly. Wow.

Full body with moderate carbonation. Thick and creamy. Motor oil.

A big rich stout. Among the best beers out there and a truly fine creation. I wish I had more.

From my tasting notes: The Black Damnation IV poured a deep opaque black with a strong chocolate and coffee aroma. The taste was sublime. It had a very deep and smooth coffee and chocolate flavor with hints of vanilla almost like drinking chocolate syrup. The very high alcohol was almost imperceptible as I savored every sip. The only downside is I may never get to try this one again as you cannot get it in Texas.

A: Pours thick dark black in color. Medium tan layer of tight bubbled head. Good carbonation for a high alcohol beer. Alcohol sheeting and alcohol feet.

S: Really deep espresso notes right away. There is booze there. That sweet rum brings the vanilla and oak notes. Dark fruit. Tobacco. Roast.

T: Dark roast. Dark chocolate. You get that sweet rum, bringing vanilla and oak. Lots of espresso. Tobacco for sure. Some leather. It's a deep beer. Finish is long. You start bringing more of that rum in finish.

M: Full bodied. Chewy.

330 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Best by March 2015.

Appearance - Just shy of inky black. Some transparency at the edges. A lot of nice khaki foam. Lots of wisps.

Smell - Lots of coffee. Extremely strong. Raw, green coffee flavor. Roasty chocolate. Some cadamel.

Taste - Intense coffee again. Less raw, more bitter. Touch of acidity from the coffee. Dark chocolate. Bitter coffee finish.

Mouthfeel - Really bitter and some booze. Medium-high carbonation.

Overall - Not sure if that coffee acidity is a result of age. It's not off-putting, but the coffee is extremely strong.

11.2oz. bottle enjoyed on 4/7/2013 at the Delirium Hoppy Loft. Pours an inky black with a one inch, dense, creamy, mocha-colored head. Nose expresses intense coffee grounds followed by rich chocolate on a roasted malt backbone. Taste follows nose - the coffee flavor has held up surprisingly well. There's also a nice chocolate character interspersed with a tart, slightly vinous quality, followed by a hint of oxidation that is just starting to peak through. Mouthfeel is medium-light in body with a creamy/silky texture and a light carbonation. The body on this beer is really quite pleasant. Overall, a very good big stout that has held up surprisingly well; however, I would say that it is just starting to decline based on the slightly oxidized character that is starting to show itself. Perhaps my favorite Black Damnation so far.

Raspberry black with rosey sandstone foam that trails.
Humus, boozey rum barrel and coffee on the nose.
Black cherry skin, cocoa, raspberry jam, a vanilla hit and vague tea leaf hop.
Brown sugar syrup finish and tobacco linger.
Medium to full, round, chewy, smooth.

Big and chunky. The wood is there, but there's plenty of fruit, too. Gentle, at the end of the day, especially for the strength. But should this really be called "coffee" anything?

A- Black as night, Thick oily texture with two finger dark brown head that seems to last forever!

S - Coffee, wood, Chocolate and some peat, very nice nose, more intense than regular Black Albert.

T - Roasted Coffee, a lot of Coffee!! and dark chocolate, Molasses and a bit of dark fruits, There is also sweetness in this beer that compliments all the flavors.

M - Low carbonation and thick mouthfeel, what you can expect from the Struise, very sweet finnish.

O - Fantastic Stout from the Struise, one of their best in my opinion.

Batch from 2011.10.01. Best before 2016.12 29.

A: Pours an absolutely oily black color forming a small brown thin bubbled brown head. Good retention but no much lacings left. A thin layer remains for long time on the top

S: Perfect. Dark chocolate, coffee, wood and bourbon. Some notes of roasted malts, grassy hops bready yeasts. Also some notes of mint and alcohol in the very end

T: Perfect as the nose. Upfront is slightly sweet with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, bourbon, oak, roasted malts. End is made of an intense roast bitterness and some earthy and bready yeasts

M: Extremely creamy and heavy body. Molasses. Low carbonation. Aftertaste is very woody with notes of roasted bitterness

O: Excellent beer. One of the best beers I've ever had. Perfect

Wow, normally i always review my Struise beers i drink. I always thought i had reviewed this one. Seems to be not the case....

Poured in my Struise glass this beer looks like heaven. Black, pitch pitch black this one is! Huhge head with millions of bubbles. Nice and slow lacing in the glass. Smeel is coffee, dark roasted coffee. I stopped drinking coffee twelve years ago and now i am drinking a coffee based stout.

Very tasty, i am glad i have lots of bottles left! The alcohol is really hidden with its super balanced taste

Reviewing the Black Damnation IV (Coffee Club) from De Struise Brouwers.
Score: 87

Unknown vintage bottle served in a Stella Artois chalice and enjoyed on 08/08/12.

Appearance: Pours the color of black coffee with a finger of creamy milk chocolate/mocha colored head that settles into a ring around the glass. Average lacing and retention with an oily cling. 4/5

Smell: Black coffee, cocoa, sweet raisin and alcohol. A little syrupy brown sugar aroma and roast too. 3.5/5

Taste: Milk chocolate, roasted coffee, and brown sugar. Sweet dark fruit flavor and a hint of creamy vanilla. A light metallic alcohol flavor in the finish that seems to fade out as the beer warms/layers. Lingering coffee flavor. The flavor is not boozy, which is surprising given the nose. 3.75/5

Mouthfeel: Medium-full bodied, low carbonation. Syrupy mouthfeel. Sweet finish. 4/5

Overall: A really solid tasting stout that is overpriced and overrated for it's rarity.

Recommendation: Stick with De Struise's Black Albert. It is easier to find and substantially tastier (albeit without the coffee flavor).

Pairings: Pound cake.

Cost: $12 for an 11.2 oz bottle.

A- Slick, oily pour of black liquid under at least three fingers of brown head. Head lasts forever and leaves nice lacing.

S - Coffee and dark fruit up front, along with a slight mustiness that I have also noticed in some other Struise beers. Doesn't really get in the way though. Chocolate and vanilla and a light sweetness as well.

T - Lots of dark fruit, some coffee and chocolate and a bit of molasses. Also roasted malt and some light char. There is some sweetness but it is kept in check. Some noticeable alcohol.

M - Mouthfeel is as slick as the pour suggested. Full but not heavy, with a roasted, bitter finish.

O - Another nice stout from de Struise. Not my favorite of the series, but the rum barrel aging adds a nice twist.

A-- Poured an oily looking reddish black color. Settled black, no light penetrating this at all. Nice looking head. A sort of dark reddish brown leather looking head. One finger in height and looks like a mousse with the thickness in the head. Sits at a nice layer of film. Great spotty lacing and leaves a dark reddish brown layer of film in the glass.

S-- Strong, powerful coffee. Has held up well with some age. Marshmallow, peat, wood, chocolate, char and ash. Just very vibrant and a big nose. Just lovely.

T-- Roasted coffee, dark chocolate, coco powder, carmel and some char and ash. Nice well rounded flavors.

M-- Low carbonation and medium feel. Slick and oily in the mid and back with a overdrawn coffee and burnt tire finish. Slightly sweet as well. Well hidden ABV.

O--- Excellent example of a RIS with coffee. Slightly dry, slightly sweet, coffee in the right spots. Well hidden ABV and just a fun beer to drink on a cold night. Will buy again if given the chance.

33cl bottle into a Duvel tulip. Big thanks to warnerry for this one.

A: Thick, oily, black body under a finger of dense reddish-brown foam. Great retention, lots of lace. Terrific.

S: Coffee, chocolate, marshmallow, vanilla, and spice. Rich, round, and intense.

T: Sweet molasses and dark fruit out front, followed by rich maltiness and solid coffee. Vanilla, spice, and mild booze on teh finish. Very smooth and flavorful.

M: Thick and very sticky. Moderate, soft carbonation. Nice.

O: Yet another extremely enjoyable, extremely huge stout from De Struise. I don't think I enjoyed it quite as much as Black Mes, and neither this nor that could hope to touch Mocha Bomb, but it's a great beer in its own right.

11.2 oz bottle, allowed to warm before being poured into by Bruery tulip.

Black Damnation IV- Coffee Club pours completely black, with four billowing fingers of brown foam crowning the beer. Head retention is great, and lacing is left in solid sheets. There's not a flaw to find in the appearance. The nose is great, with lots of chocolate, and a little bit of coffee present from the roasted grains as well. From there the rum barrels really begin to show, as the dark fruitiness present in regular Black Albert is magnified, and there'a a definite spicy aroma. The barrels are a little too present in the flavor profile though, as plums and raisins and a spiced rum character overwhelm the milk chocolate, coffee, and vanilla sweetness. The body is nice and full, with a pleasant creaminess to it, but the carbonation is a bit dull, even for a big imperial stout. Black Damnation IV- Coffee Club is a well crafted beer that doesn't quite reach the highs of Mocha Bomb.

Dominated by obvious coffee overtones, it's the nuances of Belgian influence that create complexity, interest, and challenge in this aggressively roasted and powerfully alcoholic choice.

When poured, there's no glaring difference in the appearance of this beer and espresso except for slight variations in viscocity. Carrying moderately heavy visual weight, the beer's absolute blackness is backed with an onyx-like sheen. Completely opaque, the beer releases a delicate creme of foam that swirls about the surface and clings tentatively to the glass.

Aromas of bold espresso roast is accompanied by deeply recessed notes of walnut, maple, fennel and aniseed. Make no mistake about it, this beer is all about brash coffee and alcohol fusion.

Flavors of espresso also dominate the taste. The counterpart of malts are roasty, dry, and hardly allow for malt starch or sweetness in support. Instead, the balance is given to the fruity notes of raisin and plumb and the counter of licorice and rummy alcohol. Surprisingly, the underlying sweetness makes hardly an impact and the beer doesn't seem "all espresso".

Medium bodied by somewhat of a misnomer at 13%, the coffee-like acidity and dryish roast combines for a lightly ashy texture and timid malt support. Dryness and heat of alcohol adds to the effect of abrupt closure with a strong lingering of coffee and booze to finish.

Quite enjoyable and challenging all at once, the beer follows the mold of Founders KBS and Goose Island's Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout but with less grace and balance- it's just more abrupt and brash.

Black Damnation IV was made with Black Albert that aged for 6 months on very old rum barrels. Poured from .33cl bottle into snifter glass at a tasting. Pours black with medium thin brown head that lasts decently throughout. Aromas of coffee and light rum. Flavor was really boozy and coffee. Medium to thin mouthfeel. Quite similar to Black Damnation II but more subdued. A quaffable beer nonetheless.

Previous reviews lead me to believe that this beer would be light in carbonation so I poured straight down the middle of the glass to produce a thick black liquid with a good 4 inch mocha head that persisted forever. The smell is quite oxidized with bit of cardboard and wet dog. There's coffee and roast in the aroma with bits of ash and cardboard. Damn I hope this tastes better than it smells. Taste is thick roasty molasses and sugar. Bits of dark sugared fruit dipped in vodka round out the flavor. Thick body and syrupy mouthfeel, light level of carbonation. Rum barrel aged Black Albert had me quite excited, but the sample in my glass is quite disappointing. Oxidized syrupy and actually hard to drink. I hope I have a bad bottle, because up until now De Struise hasn't let me down.

picked this one up in a recent de struise order. poured into a southampton 2012 irs snifter.

a - black as hell. thin milky tan head. had the BD2 just before this and it sported a much more impressive head.

s - filthy rich on the nose. there is a lot going on in here. the bottle boasts rum barrel aging vanilla honey tobacco and fruitiness...and although the fruitiness does not jump out to me, the others are all there in spades...providing a journey to the senses in each whiff. the vanilla and rum create a decadent bakery odor.

t - massive taste. explosive. the honey jumps out to me first, then a ride through a rum barrel tunnel and finishes with a vanilla burst...leaving a dry tobacco coating.

m - big and bold. coats the mouth and finishes with dry tobacco. much thinner than black albert.

o - overall an amazing jump from black albert and an interesting take. worth seeking out, but not nearly the best in the series. the mocha bomb that i just had was far superior.

After easily getting Black Damnation II, III, VI and even V (much sought-after Double Black) the IV prove to be the most elusive prey I had to wait for patiently for a long time.

Pours up to an inch thick well formed medium-tan head with moderate retention that creates rather short lived laces as it sets to a stable collar atop of opaque blak body.
Nose is dominated by huge espresso and tobbaco with alcohol-soaked dark fruits shining through. Coffee aroma is so pronounced I' cant believe it hasn't been aged on coffe beans, solely on old rum barrles.
Flavor is better with coffee element being less dominant: smooth chocolate-sweet initially followed by dark fruits and tobacco and final transition to coffeeish roasted finish with warming alcohol that lingers. (330 ml, BB date 12-29-2016, into tulip.)
Medium bodied and smooth with soft carbonation.

In short, somewhat boozy imperial stout with strong espresso and tobacco character.

We hit the road last monday for a trip to the Westvleteren monastery and afterwards we wanted to go for a meet and greet with Urbain (Struise). Urbain however didn't show up so we went to the pub near by. Luckily the pub in Oostvleteren has warm connections with the Struise boys, because the Black Damnation Coffee Club and other variations were available. I wasn't the driver so I could give it go.

A - A pitch black poor with a brown head, with a big bubbly structure. this is how any beer should look; powerful and tasty.

S - A very nice coffee odor mixed with mocha and chocolate wake up my nose. This has to be a beautiful beer.

T - This is a thick syrupy, mouth coating sipper. Beautiful coffee and wood tones are mixed into this near perfect blend. It is one of the nicest coffee stouts I have ever tasted. In the deepness of this beer there is also peat, mocha, toffee, candy sugar and some tiny liquor tones present.

M - This beer coats the mouth very nicely, a superb mouth feeling; thick, syrupy and creamy.

O - A very nice imperial stout, very heavy and tasty.

A: Very dense liquid which has hard time trying its way out of the bottle ! Black as hell. Thick and opaque. The head takes shape after a while, dark also then fades into a thin film.

S: Coffee is surely present here. But the smell is mainly ashes, smoke, a resinous, herbal scent. Faint notes of soaked red fruits and a huge alcohol background.

T: Taste however is mainly coffee. A bit earthy also. Very bitter with a long finish.

M: Full bodied, thick as it can be. Creamy but not sticky, then not drying out, almost perfect for the style.

O: Woh ! I love this beer. Coffee stout might sometimes be too straight. This one is a stand out !

Pitch black throughout and a very thin light brown head. This doesn't leave much more than a few small spots of lace down the glass. Gorgeous color.

Strong and powerful aroma of roasted coffee beans and freshly brewed coffee. The aroma comes in waves, and while is coffee-centric, there is some chocolate and vanilla notes as well.

The flavor follows the aroma very closely. This is a big, rich, coffee stout, and it makes no apologies for being so. There's some rich vanilla, earth, and wood flavors as well, but the coffee is dominant and delicious.

Medium bodied with low carbonation. I would have preferred a slightly thicker, richer mouthfeel, though it's not at all distracting.

Another wonderful Damnation.

Poured into a cervoise, this brew appears black in color with 2.5 fingers worth of brown head. Solid retention to the cap throughout the duration. Patches and a webbing pattern of lace stick to the glass. A swirl revives a dark brown finger back to the surface.

The smell of this brew is dark and roasted coffee which imparts a light citrus aspect. Deep roasted grain fills the nose with hints of char, chocolate and earthy almost dirty notes. Somewhat of a light touch of must from a combination of coffee and earth character. As the brew warms, a light note of tobacco emerges mixed with more earthy and chocolate malt.

The taste is quite earthy with a deep almost dirty earthen flavor of old, stale coffee. The coffee element imparts a light citrus coffee bean aspect with a hint of hops. Herbal at times with a bitterness contributed equally from hops and dark roasted grain. There is a minor alcohol kick that seems lightly exaggerated from a spirit-like inclusion that gets increasingly tangy as the brew warms up.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. The 13% abv is very well integrated in this brew. Overall it has a solid balance and arrangement of flavors. However, when compared to the rest of the black damnation series, I think this one falls a little short compared to the others. Perhaps this one would have been best enjoyed as fresh as possible. Regardless, it is worth a try if you get the chance.

On tap at Ebenezers.

A- Pitch black with a massive, creamy dark mocha head. It retains nicely but doesn't leave a lot of lace.

S- Coffee explosion. Just a ton of dark roast coffee, cocoa and malt.

T- Dark roast, bitter, coffee ground bonanza. It seems like a truckload of coffee goes into each keg of this. Some harsh alcohol at times. Dark malt and vanilla flavors as well.

MF- A bit lighter bodied than I expected. Alcohol fumes warm the palate. Roast bitterness level is huge in the finish.

One word: Coffee.

A: Pours deep black with a fluffy tan head. Looks very inviting.

S: Initial heavy blast of ground espresso, followed by spicy tobacco, subtle vanilla, honey dark chocolate.

T: Smooth dark chocolate transitions to bitter espresso roast, ending with smoky oak, bitter molasses and alcohol in the finish, spicy aftertaste.

M: Smooth, though I found this to be thinner than the first three in the series. Still, definitely one to sip.

O: Very nice, strong coffee flavor that somehow melds perfectly with the rest of the flavors. Interesting how this is expressed so softly, when I would expect a softer profile from rum barrel aging.
