After easily getting Black Damnation II, III, VI and even V (much sought-after Double Black) the IV prove to be the most elusive prey I had to wait for patiently for a long time.

Pours up to an inch thick well formed medium-tan head with moderate retention that creates rather short lived laces as it sets to a stable collar atop of opaque blak body.
Nose is dominated by huge espresso and tobbaco with alcohol-soaked dark fruits shining through. Coffee aroma is so pronounced I' cant believe it hasn't been aged on coffe beans, solely on old rum barrles.
Flavor is better with coffee element being less dominant: smooth chocolate-sweet initially followed by dark fruits and tobacco and final transition to coffeeish roasted finish with warming alcohol that lingers. (330 ml, BB date 12-29-2016, into tulip.)
Medium bodied and smooth with soft carbonation.

In short, somewhat boozy imperial stout with strong espresso and tobacco character. (942 characters)

We hit the road last monday for a trip to the Westvleteren monastery and afterwards we wanted to go for a meet and greet with Urbain (Struise). Urbain however didn't show up so we went to the pub near by. Luckily the pub in Oostvleteren has warm connections with the Struise boys, because the Black Damnation Coffee Club and other variations were available. I wasn't the driver so I could give it go.

A - A pitch black poor with a brown head, with a big bubbly structure. this is how any beer should look; powerful and tasty.

S - A very nice coffee odor mixed with mocha and chocolate wake up my nose. This has to be a beautiful beer.

T - This is a thick syrupy, mouth coating sipper. Beautiful coffee and wood tones are mixed into this near perfect blend. It is one of the nicest coffee stouts I have ever tasted. In the deepness of this beer there is also peat, mocha, toffee, candy sugar and some tiny liquor tones present.

M - This beer coats the mouth very nicely, a superb mouth feeling; thick, syrupy and creamy.

O - A very nice imperial stout, very heavy and tasty. (1,078 characters)

A: Very dense liquid which has hard time trying its way out of the bottle ! Black as hell. Thick and opaque. The head takes shape after a while, dark also then fades into a thin film.

S: Coffee is surely present here. But the smell is mainly ashes, smoke, a resinous, herbal scent. Faint notes of soaked red fruits and a huge alcohol background.

T: Taste however is mainly coffee. A bit earthy also. Very bitter with a long finish.

M: Full bodied, thick as it can be. Creamy but not sticky, then not drying out, almost perfect for the style.

O: Woh ! I love this beer. Coffee stout might sometimes be too straight. This one is a stand out ! (644 characters)

Had this on tap a Capone's during their Black Friday event. The beer came out in a small snifter glass and it looked like a liquified chocolate bar. The color was a muddy brown color with not much head on top. The smell of the beer reminded me of a chocolate milk shake... The aroma has lots of chocolate and coffee notes and yet they seem muted somehow. The taste of the beer is very bitter. There is a ton of bitter chocolate and coffee notes along with a hefty amount of Nobel Hop flavors too. The mouthfeel is thick, and leaves a film of your teeth. There beer also feels like liquified cocoa powder. Overall sadly I was not a fan of this beer at all. Maybe it was a bad pour or the beginning or end of the keg... Who knows but either way it was kind of a let down to me. It might be worth trying from a bottle. (815 characters)

Pitch black throughout and a very thin light brown head. This doesn't leave much more than a few small spots of lace down the glass. Gorgeous color.

Strong and powerful aroma of roasted coffee beans and freshly brewed coffee. The aroma comes in waves, and while is coffee-centric, there is some chocolate and vanilla notes as well.

The flavor follows the aroma very closely. This is a big, rich, coffee stout, and it makes no apologies for being so. There's some rich vanilla, earth, and wood flavors as well, but the coffee is dominant and delicious.

Medium bodied with low carbonation. I would have preferred a slightly thicker, richer mouthfeel, though it's not at all distracting.

Another wonderful Damnation. (769 characters)

Poured into a cervoise, this brew appears black in color with 2.5 fingers worth of brown head. Solid retention to the cap throughout the duration. Patches and a webbing pattern of lace stick to the glass. A swirl revives a dark brown finger back to the surface.

The smell of this brew is dark and roasted coffee which imparts a light citrus aspect. Deep roasted grain fills the nose with hints of char, chocolate and earthy almost dirty notes. Somewhat of a light touch of must from a combination of coffee and earth character. As the brew warms, a light note of tobacco emerges mixed with more earthy and chocolate malt.

The taste is quite earthy with a deep almost dirty earthen flavor of old, stale coffee. The coffee element imparts a light citrus coffee bean aspect with a hint of hops. Herbal at times with a bitterness contributed equally from hops and dark roasted grain. There is a minor alcohol kick that seems lightly exaggerated from a spirit-like inclusion that gets increasingly tangy as the brew warms up.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. The 13% abv is very well integrated in this brew. Overall it has a solid balance and arrangement of flavors. However, when compared to the rest of the black damnation series, I think this one falls a little short compared to the others. Perhaps this one would have been best enjoyed as fresh as possible. Regardless, it is worth a try if you get the chance. (1,446 characters)

Opaque black with spidery foam webbing stuck to the sides. Lazy skim retention.

Aroma is dark coffee rinds that have been left in the French press for a day because I forgot to wash it out after I made coffee. Wet soil and bourbon.

Dark roast coffee is the big cock on the block but the bourbon and dark chocolate syrup sweeten the deal. Engaging and addictive.

I could sit at Ebenezer's all night, drink this and listen to crickets. Last night I did just that. (465 characters)

A- Pitch black with a massive, creamy dark mocha head. It retains nicely but doesn't leave a lot of lace.

S- Coffee explosion. Just a ton of dark roast coffee, cocoa and malt.

T- Dark roast, bitter, coffee ground bonanza. It seems like a truckload of coffee goes into each keg of this. Some harsh alcohol at times. Dark malt and vanilla flavors as well.

MF- A bit lighter bodied than I expected. Alcohol fumes warm the palate. Roast bitterness level is huge in the finish.

One word: Coffee. (516 characters)

Tasted 8/10/2011

A: Pours deep black with a fluffy tan head. Looks very inviting.

S: Initial heavy blast of ground espresso, followed by spicy tobacco, subtle vanilla, honey dark chocolate.

T: Smooth dark chocolate transitions to bitter espresso roast, ending with smoky oak, bitter molasses and alcohol in the finish, spicy aftertaste.

M: Smooth, though I found this to be thinner than the first three in the series. Still, definitely one to sip.

O: Very nice, strong coffee flavor that somehow melds perfectly with the rest of the flavors. Interesting how this is expressed so softly, when I would expect a softer profile from rum barrel aging. (653 characters)

Pours just about pitch black, 2-finger tan head settles to a thick ring pretty quickly, some lacing left.

Smells of intense coffee and booze. Taste is similar...strong coffee, roasted coffee beans, very boozy on the finish, though I got used to that after some time. Some chocolate and big vanilla sweetness as it warms. A bit of dark fruit. Decent mouthfeel, way too boozy.

Not bad, nice intense coffee flavor here, but the alcohol detracts big time. It got better as it warmed though. (511 characters)

Look: the beer pours a very dark color with a dark brown fluffy head.
Smell: Roasted malts, lot of coffee, some chocolate, vanilla and rum. Nice
Taste: A letdown compared to the smell. For me this tastes like old bitter burned coffee. Some malts, chocolate and vanilla. Still not bad though, was just expecting more after the excellent smell.
Mouthfeel: medium-thick body, medium carbonation.
Overall: A nice beer, I love coffee, I love coffee beers, but for me this tastes a bit too much like old coffee. Still, not a bad beer, excellent nose, worth to try. (559 characters)

Bottle from Struise webshop. Served in a Surly Darkness glass. Best before March 2015, Lot A.

A - Giant three fingers of dark reddish mocha foam that slowly settles to a thick cap, leaving fingers of lace behind. Body is a very, very dark brown that has some faint color at the bottom of the glass.

S - Taste has the signature Black Albert anise and fruity Belgian yeast character. There's a coffee with cream element, as well as some vanilla and a touch of spiced rum and tobacco. Very faint oak and minimal alcohol.

T - Taste has significantly more candi sugar and dark spiced rum flavor. There's some oak and star anise in the finish. Dark chocolate malts and roasted coffee beans rounds out. Not overly sweet, but not too much char and smoke either.

M - Feel is wonderful. Creamy medium-full body, with soft moderate carbonation, and a tannic and roasty finish. Tooth-coating residual sugars remind me of drinking rum. Almost no alcohol presence.

D - I crushed a bottle of this in no time. Delicious stuff that is highly recommended. The only fatiguing part was the espresso and anise bitterness in the aftertaste. Another masterful job by Urbain in disguising alcohol. (1,178 characters)

The beer is a deep, dark brown shade, bordering on blackness. The tan head lasts for a considerable time, leaving ample lacing on the glass.

The aroma brings lots of coffee. Oh I do I do I do want coffee! Ahem...additionally, scents of yeast, roast, and chocolate.

What a terrific flavor, with a heavy, potent dose of delicious coffee. The beer is far from one dimensional, with beautifully integrated yeast and chocolate flavors. The finish brings a dry bitterness that has me yearning for more.

Alcohol presence is a non issue. I wish I had a box of this awesome brew in my cellar.

Pours black with a good tan head that sticks around for a long, long time and leaves plenty of lacing on the way down. Lots of spotty lacing. Head is really creamy. Nose brings forward a heavy dose of chocolate and coffee. Loads and loads of coffee. Loving it, just like Dov, my hilarious psychology professor who liked to quip that he coined the phrase "I'm lovin' it," not McDonald's. Back to the beer.

Flavor brings even more coffee. Really delicious throughout. Can't get enough of that coffee. Light sweetness. Full and viscous body; really creamy. Still lovin' it. Really beautiful beer that I'd love to have again. (745 characters)

Poured into a snifter from a 33 cl bottle, beer is black with a brown tan head with some lacing, some carbonation. Looks good.

Aroma is great, chocolate, fudge, sweet, coffee, nice.

Beer does not live up to its taste. It falls flat, too thin, mildly sweet, almost no bitterness. It is fine but every time I take a drink I smell it, get excited and then end up disappointed. Oh well. Maybe the other Black Damnations will be better. (433 characters)

Black with a seriously dark chocolate head. Big coffee aroma with some dark chocolate. Bitter taste with more coffee. Dark malts and chocolate round it out. ABV is well hidden with a thick mouthfeel. This is a decent coffee stout, though not my favorite, but it's a good one to get an idea behind the difference between the struisse stouts and typical American imperials. (413 characters)

On Tap at Teresa's Next Door in a wine glass.

Coffee club is a black stout like every other black stout, it is B-L-A-C-K, black like a stout. A nice film of a cap of dark colored tanish foam on top leaving minor stick.

Coffee Club smells like a coffee club, a big roasted coffee flavor with cream, vanilla and a splash of rum soaked in from the barrel. A bit of wood. All coffee no filler, even though I heard there aint no coffee addition except for the base beer components.

Coffee Club tastes like a coffee club, in that I can taste coffee and a heaping of roast and vanilla with slight coconut. The rum barrel is there and noted and quite bold. Cream, with some char in the back with dark fruit and some alcohol, it is 13% afterall. Comes of more sweet than the Mocha Bomb I had before.

Feel is quite big, the body is quite above medium approaching full, oh hell, it's full bodied and it packs a punch leaving for a sipper. Carbed up nice but not overly so, it stays with me for a bit after putting it down. Overall, I enjoyed this, but Mocha Bomb was more my thing. (1,074 characters)

Review taken from notes.

A - This beer pours a very dark brown color, almost black. It has a nice 1.5-finger chocolate brown head on it. The head has good retention and leaves some nice lacing behind on the glass.

S - It smells of dark roasted malts, and a big coffee presence. There are notes of vanilla, caramel, molasses, and toffee. I am getting a touch of booze as well.

T - It starts off with a big roasted malt flavor. There is also a strong coffee presence here, as expected. There are also some nice flavors of caramel, chocolate, vanilla, and even some black cherry. The finish leaves some lingering roasted bitterness and booziness.

M - This has a full body and lower carbonation. It goes down smooth, and it coats the mouth nicely letting you taste every bit of it. It has a slick and oily feel to it. There is some lingering bitterness and alcohol warmth in the finish.

O - There is good drinkability here. It is most definitely a sipper, but it goes down great. It's 90 degrees out right now, and this is drinking great. Overall, I really enjoyed this. The coffee notes stood out quite well. I would definitely purchase more of this. (1,209 characters)

On tap at Rattle n Hum in NYC. Black and oily with a small tan head that quickly fades to oblivion.

Heavy cream, dark chocolates, espresso, black licorice, leather, vanilla, burnt caramel and more dark fruit aromas.

Thick, rich, viscous, creamy and decadent. Layers of coffee, espresso, mocha, machiato flavors. Roasty in the middle, burnt and bitter coffe grinds on the finish. Black licorice abound with currant only a step behind. Leather, vanilla, old dates, caramel and then more bitter sweet coffee. (507 characters)

Massive thanks goes out to cmrillo who shared this one with the group at the "Evening Wood" tasting graciously hosted by cmrillo as well! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller flute. Poured pitch black with a half finger light brown head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, coffee, and wood. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, coffee, spices, and wood. It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a really good brew. Very nice flavor profile going on here. The spice aspect really was a nice palate change up in the series as it really made this one stand out from the others. Had the chance to be lucky enough to try all the series (except V) back-to-back to compare them. This was my second favorite in the series. (860 characters)

On tap at Rattle n Hum.

A: It pours black as night with a hint of a tan head. It recedes quickly leaving little to no lacing. Completely opaque in appeance it is quite the menacing brew.

S: Huge notes of coffee and and smokey wood start out the experience with aromas of licorice and charred malt. The coffee is completely dominant leaving very little room for anything else.

T: Coffee forward with some astringent bitterness from the wave of black malts. There are some strong tobacco and wood/barrel flavors that meld seemlessly with the burnt nature of the brew. The base beer is still evident with similar notes of apples and dark chocolate. It finishes pretty dry with another big dose of java.

M: medium to full bodied with minimal carbonation.

O: Back to back I prefer the Black Mes, the coffee notes are a bit too dominant and completely over shadow the rum barrel. (882 characters)

On tap at Eulogy on 6/5/11 for the 2nd Annual Coffee Beer Brunch during Philly Beer Week.

A - Dark walnut brown, almost black liquid with a creamy burnt mocha head that reduced to a thin, wispy veil but yielded plenty of web-like lacing around the goblet.

S - bursting with authentic, fresh ground coffee character up front with a hint of rum-soaked caramel and semi-sweet chocolate. As the liquid warmed up a bit, a hint of alcohol also emerged, although not as much as 13% ABV would warrant.

T - Flavor is quite coffee-forward with a candied, rum-soaked wood character. Pretty awesome, actually! While there is a hint of acridity, it does very little to diminish the quality of, or therefore, my enjoyment of the stout. The rum barrel aging adds a dose of alcohol but also a pleasant sweetness that cloaks the boozy warmth to a degree that the chocolate sweetness and coffee bitterness really shine through.

M - Smooth, sticky and full-bodied with a silky texture and some oily slickness. There is virtually no alcohol burn whatsoever for such a huge stout. The rum imparts a pleasant sweetness in the finish as well as subtle woody notes, although it is still rather bitter overall.

D - This sucker drinks like a champ for such a huge stout, so it remains smooth and approachable throughout. The coffee character and sweetness from the rum barrel aging really hit this one home for me. Really enjoyable! (1,414 characters)

Pours black with a half-finger light brown head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with moderate amounts of rich coffee and lighter amounts of semi-sweet chocolate and molasses. As the beer warms slight dark fruit aromas waft out.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Equal amounts of roasted malt and molasses flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by solid amounts of smooth coffee. Midway through the sip the sweetness from the molasses subsides a bit as dark chocolate flavors come into play, carrying through to a mildly bitter ending. As with the aroma, dark fruit flavors work their way into things as the beer warms - booze-soaked plums with hints of raisins.

Mouthfeel is very good. It’s got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn’t have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall I was expecting a lot more of a full flavor profile from this beer but I left somewhat disappointed. As with almost all of de Struise’s beers, the mouthfeel is fantastic. A solid beer that’s worth a shot but I wouldn’t spend much time seeking it as there are better coffee beers out there. (1,237 characters)

this was just as smooth as the III but with a very different realm of flavors entirely. an abv that was hard to believe... it has the core quality of that of the III, dense coffee malt and citrus hint finishing aromatic but... this iwas more evident in the nose. there wasn't as rich a fruit or walnut. but the beer has a very different post bittering finish. i'm not quite sure if it was because of hops but the coffee in the beer is very present. it was a heavy roast. and actually a pretty good one. much more acidic either way. may have been a post primary addition. interesting mineral tobacco end and american hopping transition. (635 characters)

served on-tap at Flying Saucer, Kansas City, MO, into a snifter

Pours an inky, jet black. I can make out my reflection in the glass; I cannot see any brown or red even at the bottom of the body; this is dark. Less than one finger of tan head sits on-top when the glass comes to me, and it doesn't bother staying around for very long. Still, the color of the body is perfect.

Chocolate malt and lots of espresso dominate the nose in the early going. As the beer warms up, it gains plenty of complexity. The coffee gets lighter and fruitier. The alcohol fusels start to emerge, but they bring a lightly fruity quality the bouquet; I am attributing this to the rum barrels that Black Damnation IV was aged in. Most intriguing is the green vegetal quality that this beer has. Fellow BA, FernMaster, called out this note as a soybean component; I have to say that the vegetal character does come across a lot like soybeans. That may not sound appealing to you, but it makes the aroma stand out for me.

Imagine if Founders Breakfast Stout were more dark fruits-driven, more Belgian in character. That is what Black Damnation IV tastes like. It truly does taste like Black Albert brewed with coffee: the signature dark fruits and yeast flavors of Black Albert are evident here, only smoothed out by the rum barrels. Nothing can tame down the coffee in this beer though; it's pretty dominant.

I love love love love the mouthfeel on this beer. It's very thick, even for the style, yet retains a carbonation level that allows the beer to be luxurious and smooth while not also not being flat or still. Chewy yet silky: this beer feels great.

Overall, Black Damnation IV isn't up the the same par as the bottles of III (Black Mes) and especially II (Mocha Bomb). It's a bit too disjointed to achieve an extremely high score. It's damn good though, and a worthy member of the Black Damnation line. If you're lucky enough to have a keg near you, then you have to take advantage of it. (1,976 characters)
