Dark mahogny, hazy beer with a two finger high, beige head.

Nose: Yeast, banana, alcohol, dried fruit, caramel and plums - very pleasent indeed!

Taste: Red berries, plum, malt, spice, oak and raisin.

Mouth: Round, creamy mouthfeel with a small but right carbonation.

Overall: This is a beauty! Well balanced, creamy, full body, "grown up" beer.
If you haven't tried this, now you have a goal in life!

First attempt at a review, here go's nothin'...brought from the brewery itself, great place to visit on a Saturday. First impressions: this is very similar to Westvleteren VII, maybe they could be using the same water? Just as with the Westy, the alcohol is very smooth for a quad. Molasses and dates dominate the taste profile. Overall one of my top beers!

2011 bottling

Appearance: The mahogany liquid pours out and raises a two inch cap of beige foam; several strands of lace appear as the beer is consumed

Smell: The alcohol in the aroma fuses with berries, dark fruit and caramel tones

Taste: Blackberry and grape flavors, up front, with fig elements building; underneath, the caramel, candi sugar and toasted bread elements add depth; in the mid-palate, the alcohol builds and a spice cake aspect arrives; a dry and oaky aspect emerges in the finish to counteract the sweetness

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body, somewhat creamy; moderate carbonation

Overall: Layers of complexity; not in the top echelon but a very worthy beer from De Struise

Thanks, bobertkuekn, for the opportunity

33cl bottle served in a snifter
Pours a deep dark brown with some reddish highlights, starts out with a finger or so of tan bubbles that recede to a ring around the edge in a couple of minutes. The aroma is of flavorful dark bread backed by rich dark fruits with a touch of caramel and toffee as well. The taste has a lot of the same notes as the smell. Upfront I am noticing that this beer is pretty sweet so the toffee and caramel are very noticeable. The bread and biscuit come next and they are quickly followed by a bit of pepper that I guess is from the hops and alcohol that does tend to creep up as the beer warms. Greatly filling but not too heavy low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel that finishes relatively clean if not just a tiny bit dry with a touch of sweetness that suggests the fruit. Very pleased to have had the opportunity to try this one, I think I've had better quads but this one is authentic and very nice.
