A - A very black beer, poors like old engine oil. The head is bark brown and looks powerful.

S - Dark chocolate, wood, wine & coffee

T - This I have never tasted before! If one would tell me that there is plastic inside, I would say that is possible! This taste is so complex and interesting it is hard to find good words for it. Wood, oak, port, candy sugar, peat, chocolate, coffee, vanilla etc.

M - A medium carbonation and no bitterness. In the end there is some alcohol warmth. The body could have thicker to my opinion.

O - A good RIS, but slightly over the top, but now I am nagging.

A - Pours a thick oily black colour with terrific deep coffee coloured head that retains well

S - A hint of port notes with some burnt but slightly sweet chocolate/coffee and dark fruit.

T - Get some Molasses, dark chocolate, earthy, liquorice, with some sweet candied sugar, loads of dark fruits with a hint of vanilla, oak. Wow!

M - Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation

O - Well I haven't yet tried the Kate the Great but I look forward to it. With out a doubt its right up there with one the best beers I have had. Full of flavour and gets better as you drink it, with no hint of the 11.5% (2011 NO.42). Definitely recommend and one to savour. Enjoy!

Pours a deep crimson- approaching black in the center with feigned highlights. Dark teen tan head with tons of carbonation.

Smell is slight roast with notes of vinous sherry and milk chocolate. Hints at slight oxidation.

Flavor plays heavier on the sherry and roast, but doesn't taste completely balanced- it doesn't have the lush finish that I associate with Black Albert.

Mouthfeel is on the thinner side, but the carbonation is nice.

Pretty solid brew, but may be a bit tighter fresh. (No idea on the age of this bottle)

According to the bottle this is a RIS that was blended out of Kate the Great and Black Albert then aged in port barrels…. woa! Not sure exactly but based on several other reviews of bottles mentioned a 330 ML bottle, so I'll go with that, poured into a Duvel stemmed Tulip Glass. Pours out of the glass brown but makes it's way closer to black as it rises up in the glass. Coffee with a touch of cream colored head that basically sticks around the whole time various sized bubbles. Great lacing from both the head and the liquid itself that, sort of a nice syrupy effect.

Smell is outstanding. Nice and roasty, sweet, rich, fairly robust, and finishes fruity. Starts with a sweeter style of very dark chocolate with tones. A little bit of fresh cut grass and then some strong fruits (various grapes, cherries), maybe some tobacco, and finishes with a hint of brown sugar.

Taste is unbelievable, here's were you can tell it's a port barrel aged beer, I'm not always a fan of that, but they nailed this one. Plenty of sweet and bitter chocolate, not as strong of a coffee tone, but still some mild roasted tones and some over toasted dark crunchy grains. Plenty of both dark dehydrated and red fruits (figs, cherries, raisons, grapes…). Some nice wood oaky and vanilla earthy and leathery tones that don't get too bitter either. Possibly a little bit of licorice as well towards the end.

Mouthfeel is perfect. Full bodied, great carbonation level. Starts smooth and works its way to a niiice dry bitter earthy finish, like a high class dry red wine that gets you right at the ends of your jaw. Woody at the end with some natural vanilla feeling sweetness. Bold without feeling like you have to chew it, not too heavy. Great slow sipper, but this is by choice and sheer determination, you can easily drink this way faster if you're not careful. Alcohol is well hidden. Very upset this is my only beer here. I don't know why this beer isn't talked boat more, it's wonderful. Thanks Ron for an absolutely KILLER extra!

2012 Rating. Rated shortly after the release of this beer.

33 cl. bottle @ home / purchased @ Sruise store in Bruges: black with a real mocha, coffee head, that is one lovely head / smells like chocolate, mocha, barrel, porto, touch berries / taste is very creamy, plenty of vanilla mocha, chocolate, ice-cream, dark fruits, followed by barrel, porto, touch porto, hint sour berries / excellent basebeer or just “beer” because this is close to BD XI in terms of deliciousness, this is a lovely beer, could use more love.
