Really cloudy dark amber with almost no light passing through it. Creamy off white head, one finger receding slowly and leaving lots of sticky traces.
A lot of spices in the smell, both from the yeasts and the Port barrel aging. Lots of vanilla, licorice, star anise, ginger, with lots of caramel, light molasses, white raisin, fig and candi sugar on top. Smells like Christmas cake with Port wine "accidentally" dropped in the mixture.
Warm alcohol and fruit jam in the initial sip, dark cherry, plum, boozy raisin, overripe peach, apple slices, orange rind. Sticky caramel, faint toffee, butterscotch, a touch of chocolate, cake dough-like maltiness with candi sugar. Quite a rich fluffy "pillow" for the multitude of spices, from prickly peppercorn and ginger to more "festive" licorice, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, also some herbal floral tea-like notes and anise. The barrel bring vanilla, a damp woody note and really clear Port, spicy like a generous mulled red wine. The alcohol, far from disturbing, dries the finish and bars the way for any unwanted sweetness.
Medium body, prickly carbonation, just enough to raise up those spicy flavours. Aftertaste is woody, has burnt sugar, a bit of dried dark fruit and lingering spices.
A really warming sipper with great barrel aging and nice flavours. A bit more intensity might have helped.

Got at the brewery today and that makes it a special occasion. Dusky copper color, big head of large-bubbled ivory foam. Nice but restrained smell of wood shavings and resin, a smokey (in a good way) tea aroma, some bread, Christmas spices. A heaping mouthful of flavors slugging it out for supremacy and struggling to stay in balance. A powerful punch of hop spice and caramel malt, with the raisin-y port thing coming all through, making for a candy-apple treat and bitter contrast. Full and fleshy in the mouth on the first taste but it all slips down nicely and not overly coating. Special, unusual, interesting, satisfying, but a lot to sort through.

33cl Bottle: given to me by Ian Harrison, a big thank you!

Best before Boxing day 2017: poured into a Westvleteren chalice at home on 4 Sep 2013. I managed to keep most of the sediment in the bottle, but a few bits joined the lovely reddy brown bodied beer. The head was thin and sparse from the start.

Sweet nose of pure sugar, yeast, and Port notes too.

The taste is equally sweet and Port infused. The alcohol, which is barely hidden, adds an extra dimension. I could pontificate about the flavours and depth of character but I'll leave that to better pens than I.

A truly wonderful beer.

Bottle from Etre Gourmet. Served in a snifter.

A - Looks nearly identical to the Bourbon version, but thankfully not a gusher.

S - This reminds me of the 2009 Tsjeese Reserva I had; a nice mix of fruity esters, canid sugar, red fruit malts, sweet port, and a touch of vinous oak. Alcohol is well-concealed too.

T - Like the bourbon version, the taste seems to lack oomph relative the the aroma. Oak, bread, and peppery yeast overwhelm the fleeting port and red fruit sweetness that appears mid-palate. No alcohol, but somewhat muted and lifeless.

M - Nearly identical to the bourbon version, with a tiny bit less spritz to it.

D - Decent stuff, but needs a bit more flavor depth and potency. I think port barrels are a far better marriage with the base beer, as the flavor profiles are similar and the oak character is more restrained. I'd give this another shot if it was available locally.
