75cl bought in March 2013 at the schoolhouse, with a misprinted label. These notes are from Dec. '13 (finally input here) .Some white, waxy chunks of precipitate floating on top of the bottle neck (not a problem). Pours cloudy light brass color, Orval-looking, with a lasting nimbus of head. Orange, caramel, clove, and yeast funk, excellent smell. Powerfully tart but fruity, citrus and apricot, like an edgy and fulsome lambic, lovely. Cider vinegar but with a well-limbed ale built on top. Substantial but clean feel.

Purchased from Struise Beer Shop in Brugge.

Opened and immediately gushes losing about a quarter of the beer. It was well chilled and very surprised and disappointed with the loss. That said my room now smells wonderful.

The very lively beer pours with an imposibly large head that after a long wait of toweling off the carpet fades to a thin collar. The beer itself is a slightly hazy straw colored yellow with very lively carbonation rising in the glass.

The scent is of lemon and somewhat barnyard funk. A good amount of sour lactic acidity as well. The taste is similar beginning with lively carbonation that prickles the mouth and a very mild citrus sweetness and lemon zest. Moves to a strong acidity, but refrains from being overly sour. There is an interesting underflying sweetness that may be for the barrel aging. Maybe an imperceptible vanilla from the oak. I expected a thinner mouthfeel given the low alcohol content, but the overwhelming carbonation helps the thin feel.

The gushing aspect is inexcusable. That said it is a very good beer. Therefore I have dinged the appearance and overall score for this failure, but it have increased the mouthfeel for the improved body due to the lively carbonation. Take that as you wish.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Almost illegible label. Batch 1, 2010 bottle.

Appearance - Huge white head. Pillow of foam. Hazy orange body. Very pretty.

Smell - Grain. Lemony. Oxidized. Fruity, kind of a stone fruit aroma. A bit of funk.

Taste - Someone said it was strawberry. I get a hint of it. Some sort of berry fruit, at least. Lemon. Medium doughy grain. Moderate sourness, but it finishes out the flavor.

Mouthfeel - Seemed like it would be high carbonation, but it isn't. Low carbonation. Medium bodied, especially for a berliner.

Overall - It's decent. Seems a little old, though.
