look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

Poured into a sam adams custom glass: color dark brown, near black; head is tan, presents dense and thick at near 1 inch, it then dissipates to a ring and bubbles, good lacing on the glass.

Smell is subdued for a beer of this strength, some light roast and then some light chocolate, touch of earthy hops. Raisins and maybe plum notes develop as it warms.

Taste has a heavier roast presence than most doppelbocks, its not overpowering but it is noted and the forward malt. Other malt flavors are a subtle chocolate, light toast and maybe some caramel. Raisin like flavors are starting to develop. Hop bitterness and flavor is clean and complementary, not overpowering

Mouthfeel is a crisp, but maybe this beer is a bit young and the carb level a touch higher.

Overall, a solid brew - it needs to warm to acceptable tasting levels to get the full experience as some of the flavors are tamed by the colder temps. A touch more roast presence than other doppelbocks

Two and a half fingers of tan head with some big coarse bubbles on top that need scraped off. Retains phenomenally anyway. Almost opaque red-black color. Laces okay, too. 4.25

Smells richly malty. A little rum raisin, some dark roastiness, heavy toffee goo, medicinal notes, and a kiss of tobacco. A little chocolate, a little cherry. Somewhat on the sweet side, but it delivers.

Richness is compromised only slightly due to some bigger bitterness. Stale chocolate, big roast, fermented dark grain, hints of black cherry and blackberry, and caramelized sugars make up a busy flavor. A little coffee in the flavor. Not bad.

Body has some richness, but it's still relatively easy to drink. Some booze in the feel, but the carbonation is appealingly obvious.

A good doppelbock. I'm still a sucker for the Germans.

12 oz brown bottle with label notched October

Atwater VooDoo Vator Doppelbock poured dark brown almost black into my glass mug. A nice 2-finger creamy tan milkshake looking head was produced that later dissipated to thick foamy lacing. The nose was first hit with the malty aroma of chocolate, caramel, and a touch of toffee. I should note, that the nose was lighter than I expected. The taste as the nose was dominated by malt; with chocolate, toffee, light raisins, with a roasted character. Mouth feel is a little smooth with a light-medium body. Finish is a little dry and sticky.

VooDoo Vator is an easy drinker that is not to filling.

A - Cola brown pour with a slick coating in the glass. Minimal foam retention and no lacing.

S - Scents of leather, caramel malt, and furniture polish. Sugary scent of candy.

T - Sweet flavor of molasses-like malt. Flavors of honey, caramel, and raisin notes.

M - Syrupy thick, and a bit too much sugar. True to style but feels gritty like that last bit of sugar in a coffee mug.

O - Decent bock and I'd have it again. But the imports feature so many that are just superior.
