Reviewed from notes

Appearance: mahogany to black. a finger of a tan head, leaves behind a slight lacing after slowly fading. Opaque.

Smell: large whiffs of chocolate, slight variation from lighter to darker chocolate. some breadiness and lager yeast sweetness

Taste: opens up with chocolate and does develop into much. some lager yeast.

Mouthfeel: no lager cleanness to it. fairly watery feel

Overall: an overly chocolate and most likely not well fermenated doppelbock. no cleanness and way too one sided.

Pours a clear deep brown with garnet highlights and a modest tan head that dissipates to a thin foam layer.

Aroma is toasted malt, nutty, with a sweet caramel component. There's a hint of dark fruit character.

Flavor is malt dominant, of course, but a touch scorched initially. Fairly sweet, the alcohol is potent and counters the overly toasted malt. The dark fruit is subtle, and sherry-like. Cardboard surfaces late.

Body is fairly full, with minimal carbonation and noted alcohol warmth.

The charred and fruity characters are offputting. Either this beer has changed or my palate has. Used to really like it. Seems oxidized.

Poured into a sam adams custom glass: color dark brown, near black; head is tan, presents dense and thick at near 1 inch, it then dissipates to a ring and bubbles, good lacing on the glass.

Smell is subdued for a beer of this strength, some light roast and then some light chocolate, touch of earthy hops. Raisins and maybe plum notes develop as it warms.

Taste has a heavier roast presence than most doppelbocks, its not overpowering but it is noted and the forward malt. Other malt flavors are a subtle chocolate, light toast and maybe some caramel. Raisin like flavors are starting to develop. Hop bitterness and flavor is clean and complementary, not overpowering

Mouthfeel is a crisp, but maybe this beer is a bit young and the carb level a touch higher.

Overall, a solid brew - it needs to warm to acceptable tasting levels to get the full experience as some of the flavors are tamed by the colder temps. A touch more roast presence than other doppelbocks
