Not as deep or complex as other bocks. A little too sweet, a little too thin. Alc high enough for a winter beer. Carbonation is light but not bad for the style. Overall drinkable but not one to seek out. Bocks are one of my favorites so my expectations were high. This is the first Atwater I've tried.

Atwater's Winterbock is a lightly caramel-like and bread-like bock beer, but not really as malt-intense or complex as a traditional bock would be. I'm not sure of the malts, hops, yeast, or brewing process used, but I would be curious to see how this was made. A decent beer, but not something I feel the need to revisit again, unless it was fresh or on-tap.
Pours a 1cm tall head of light beige-colored foam that is made up of small-sized bubbles for a frothy appearance and has average retention of about one minute. Lacing is excellent, with interesting swiss-cheese like patterns clinging to the walls of the glass. Body is a dark amber-brown color, with light bringing out some lighter golden orange-brown hues. Carbonation visible through the transparent body, low in number and sluggish in activity.
Aroma is fairly disappointing, a weak caramel-like sweetness with a faint breadiness, slight cherry ester, and woodsy hop character. I expect a stronger aromatic profile from a bock, even if it is a year old.
Overall flavor is of moderate caramel malts with a strongly bread-like profile, some hop bitterness and woodsy character to balance out the sweetness. Front of palate tastes light caramel-like sweetness, bread, and light fruity esters. Mid-palate is of medium-low caramel-like sweetness with a bit of bread, tart cherry ester, and slightly spicy, woodsy hops. Back of palate features light caramel-like sweetness with bread, a bit of increase in bitterness and spiciness from hops. Aftertaste is of low to moderate bitterness from hops,
Beer is medium-bodied, with carbonation of medium-low intensity, resulting in a mouthfeel that is well-balanced between foaminess (3/5) and smoothness (2/5). Closes quite dry, with moderate stickiness on the palate and lips.

The annual summer break redding up of the living room was happening in earnest this afternoon when I came upon a plastic bag containing a six-pack carrier that included this beer. Wow!
From the bottle: I like the new labels with the XO intersection. This one has an ice-blue label and the worker is carrying a pair of skis! "high gravity lager (in script)"; "This malty, sweet, caramel colored German bock beer is brewed with imported malt and hops. Its uncommon smoothness and impeccable taste make it the perfect companion on a cold night."
My aggro pour produced a finger of fizzing, deep-tan head with moderate retention. Color was a gorgeous deep-ruby with NE-quality clarity. Nose was very malty, but not as sweet as I was expecting. Instead, it had a biscuit-like semi-sweet aroma and I was ready. Mouthfeel was thick and viscous and seemed content to sit on my tongue in a big dollop. The taste had a maple syrup flavor, but it was tempered by something, perhaps my inadvertent aging or the hops, but it was very tasty. Finish was semi-sweet with the maple syrup flavor continuing along with a mild smokiness.
This is Exhibit "A" with regard to what I have been saying about Atwater's beers - they are hit or miss with little in between. Chalk this up as a hit!
