Bottle (hard to know if it was notched or not as it was slightly torn) poured into a weizen glass.

A- A loud hiss as it opened meant an even gentle pour left a giant, khaki head that settles to a full finger leaving foamy rings on the glass. The body was a copper-brown with lots of carbonation and sediment that falls to the bottom.

S- It smells of quality dark bread initially. There are subtle chocolate and nut tones and yeasty notes. An underlying aroma of dark, cooked fruits mingles with a touch of apple cider that nears on a vinegar quality.

T- More rich, dark bread comes across as almost buttered toast. Cooked stone fruits keep it on the sweet side. A little green apple cuts through and eventually becomes cider-like. Very subtle, grassy hops stay in the background.

M- Foamy 1st sip was taken to avoid an overflow. Carbonation is moderate as I continue. Warming alcohol is pleasant, not abrasive. It's fairly viscus with a slight coating effect. Good for style in my book.

D- Well hidden alcohol goes to your head if you aren't careful. Good example of the style. I would drink it again (more likely in cooler, fall weather). As I finished the bottle, it became a nice pairing for a moderately flavored gouda.

Right from the start, I really didnt know what style of beer this was going to be. I could not find anything on the label.
It pours a fairly dark brew with , for me a total absence of any head.

The nose was a bit on the alcohol side, perhaps age in a bourbon cask. There seemed to be a good amount of malt here., but beyond that, I did not pick up anything else

The taste was big, but did not hold up to what I thought it was going to be. It was smoother and easier drinking. The malt hung onto my tounge and throat long after I finished this beer.

I was totally shocked, when I found out that this was a bock beer. This is something I need to educate myself on. The differences between a barley wine and a bock beer.

From: Binny's, Schaumburg, IL
Date: Best before April 2011
Glass: Founders snifter

Atwater's Teufel weizenbock is a sweet, somewhat caramel and cocoa-like version of the style that's lacking in complexity from esters and phenols that others in the genre feature. I could never really find myself enjoying the mix of flavors in this beer that much, and while that doesn't mean it's "bad," it's not one I'd return to, as I could just purchase four Aventinus bottles for the same price as a four-pack of this.

Pours a 2cm tall head of beige-colored foam, made up of small-sized bubbles, creating a frothy appearance. Retention is above average at around 1.5 minutes, the foam fading to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass. Lacing is good, with some large patterns and medium numbers of dots clinging to the sides of the glass. Body is a dark golden orange color, with light bringing out brighter golden orange hues. Carbonation visible through the lightly hazy (20-30% opacity) body, moderate in number and activity.

Aroma is sweet, dense, of fairly rich medium-dark caramel with a bit of yeast, prune and cocoa, but noticeably nonexistent are the banana, bubblegum, nutmeg, and clove that I expect in weizenbocks.

Front of palate tastes light caramel-like sweetness with herb-like and woodsy hop bitterness, pear and apple-like fruit esters, slight yeast. Mid-palate of light caramel, prunes, modest cocoa, dry bread, faint raspberries, spicy ethanol, and modestly herbal and bitter hops. Back of palate detects herbal and bitter hops, cocoa, moderately dark caramel sweetness, and modest spicy ethanol. Aftertaste of light caramel, cocoa, spicy ethanol, bitter and strongly herbal hops.

Beer is medium-bodied, with carbonation of medium-low intensity, resulting in a smooth (3/5), somewhat foamy (2/5) mouthfeel that's suitable for the high ethanol content of the beer. Closes dryly, with medium-high levels of stickiness clinging to the palate.
