This is a decent pils. Pours a cloudy gold with a dissipating head. Somewhat closed while cold. Nose is nicely balanced malt and hops. The hops are not too aromatic but set off the malts nicely. I thought this beer would get lots better as it warms up but it didn't really happen.

Served in a Chicago Bears shaker pint glass.

I know it's wrong, but I just can't help thinking about the One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater here... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear straw topped by a finger of white foam. The nose comprises flowers, light dry grass, and mild white bread. The taste brings in more of the same, just decidedly muted, watered-down, bland. The body is a hefty light, with a light moderate carbonation and a mildly crisp finish. Overall, this is just a boring, less-than-run-of-the-mill pils.

Appearance- golden yellow and a ton of turbulent carbonation, finger of white smooth head is inviting

Smell- light, bright, and tangy, definitely some of the more floral noble hops are coming through on this one

Taste- most definitely crisp with some crystal malts, mid mouth bitterness with a finish that also lets the hops though

Mouthfeel- light bodied, fast finish that is crisp and clear

Overall- Even though I'm not particular to the style, this one was a flavorful counterstrike to the norm

Drank straight from the bottle at Green Dot Stables in Detroit, Michigan.

Appearance: As I said, straight from the bottle. After a few glass swirls, there was a pretty impressive head going on in the glass... minimal bottle lacing. Appeared to not be hazy through the brown bottle.

Smell: A lot of hay aromas out of this ... some sweetness. Not much of a malt presence, in my opinion. Really just smelled slightly better than an adjunct lager.

Taste: Meh. Semi-sweet hay and maybe corn flavors. I'm not sure if adjuncts are used here, but it's not all-too impressive. Half way through the bottle, I had basically had enough. It's drinkable and fine, but there's nothing great about it ... there's not much to get excited of in terms of most pilseners, but this was ESPECIALLY one to be unimpressed by.

Decent. Drinkable. Alright. Not something I'll seek out again, but it's definitely not terrible.

I frankly have no idea where this bottle came from. I imagine that Tone77 dropped it off for me. but he did not review it, so maybe it came from someone else.

From the bottle: "Beer is Good Enjoy Responsibly".

The whole rhythm section was the Purple Gang and I was ready to rock! I got a finger of fizzy off-white head from my pour which quickly dissipated. Color was champagne-golden, a shade that I had never encountered in beer. Nose had a light Saaz hops presence. Mouthfeel was medium and the hops lent it a grassy taste on the tongue. Finish was semi-dry and refreshing, but it really did not strike me as anything out of the ordinary. Oh well. They can't all be out-of- the-park home runs.

12 ounce bottle into pilsener glass, bottled June 2012. Pours lightly hazy golden straw color with a 1 finger fairly dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Slight spotty lacing on the glass, and light carbonation streaming up. Aromas of lemon, herbal, pear, apple, earth, grass, bread, cracker, and light spiciness. Pretty nice aromas with good balance and decent strength. Taste of lemon, bread, pear, pepper, cracker, herbal, apple, earth, and spiciness. Decent amount of herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruit, pepper, bread, and earthy spices on the finish for a short bit. Good flavor balance and complexity; nice bitterness/sweetness balance. Pretty dry on the finish as expected. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with pretty muh zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice pilsner! Good hop flavor presence and balance. Quite enjoyable and very easy to drink. Well done.

Appearance: pale gold and a slightly hazy with a huge white head that stays around. Good lacing on the glass

Aroma: typical very light pilsner bouquet. White bread.

Flavors: light grains, white bread, and mild hop bitterness. While it is a typical pilsner taste; it is a tasty typical pilsner. Should be nice on a summer day.

Mouthfeel: moderate-low carbonation, smooth, mild malts and hops

I picked up a bottle of Atwater's Purple Gang Pilsner for $1.69 at The Lager Mill. It's another unusually warm day in Michigan and a Pilsener sounds good, lets see how it goes. Bottled in Feb. 2012. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Pilsener glass.

A- The label is the normal plain one they use for their beers with a purple tint. It poured a slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with two and a half fingers worth of white head that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end and left a little lacing. This beer looks OK.

S- The aroma is dominated by tons of bready pale malts that have a medium amount of sweetness and imparts lot of white and brown bread grainy aromas. Next comes a pretty noticeable sweet fruity aroma that is similar to a fruit jam. At the end I get a light amount of floral and earthy hops. The aroma isn't true to style, the jam aromas seems to replace the hop aromas that you normally get with the style.

T- The taste is somewhat similar to the aroma. It starts out with sweet malts up front that imparts lots of grainy and bready flavors. Next is a real slight fruit flavor followed by a really light amount of earthy hops. Instead of having a bitter finish the sweetness seems to overpower what little bitterness that showed up and it had a bready aftertaste. Not true to style and not interesting.

M- Smooth, sweet, creamy, on the light side of being medium bodied, and it had a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was ok, but Pilsners should be crisp not creamy.

Overall I thought this was a mediocre beer and a below average Pilsner, Almost every aspect of this beer was out of wack. It did have ok drinkability since it was smooth and mild, but it couldn't hold my attention and I wouldn't want another one. What I liked most about this beer was the look, it was the only thing that was Pilsner like about this beer. What I liked least about this beer was everything else, it missed the mark for the style. I wouldn't buy this beer again and I don't recommend it. I was unimpressed, it was a ways away from being a good Pilsner, too many flaws. I haven't had good luck with Atwater lately, there's been much more misses then hits, I am starting to loose hope in this brewery. A Purple Gang Pilsner from Hideout Brewing company was in BA's database, this bottle says nothing about that company.says it's an Atwater beer so that's how I'm reviewing it.
