Got the last one of these at a wine shop in Brea. Have always heard of Skyscraper but haven't been able to find much beyond the Pilsner or Lug Nut. Poured into a 12oz mini "imperial pint" style glass as two servings.

Pours a nice hazy rich ruby-brown with a lingering few fingers of light brown foam. Getting a lot of fruit flavors on the nose with a fair amount of the honey and cloves. Smells vinous vaguely reminiscent of a bottle of Schneider Aventinus. First sip yields an odd mix of flavors as the honey sweetness is readily apparent throughout the sip buoyed by the clove spiciness with nutmeg and cinnamon making an appearance for a bit of a bitter ending. Not sure if it's the confluence of spices and sweetness or if there was some prune or fig but the whole thing comes off half fruit cake (but delicious and one you'd want to eat) and half holiday spice cookies. Subsequent smells make the cinnamon and spices more apparent as the brew goes down. Nice bright mouthfeel reminiscent of a good Belgian dubbel.

This is my kind of beer and one I could easily see drinking in a city where the snow falls ferociously instead of the 40 degree nights in California. I want some of this under the tree. Not sure if it's benefited from some age or what but I hope to find this one again soon. Two seemingly irreconcilable Christmas tastes put together well. I think this one might be interesting if brewed with some spruce or maybe some vanilla.

22 ounce bottle purchased from Cooke's in El Segundo a while back for five dollars, reviewed from notes, poured into a Delerium Tremens tulip, medium to dark brown color, 1/2 inch creamy off white head that did not last long, some lacing at first, aroma consists of nutmeg, cinnamon, toasted malts, some dark fruits, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, and honey, flavor starts off with some cloves amd prunes, honey and sweet malts in the middle, some oranges in the finish, sweet aftertaste with lot of spice as well, spicy, sweet, and fruity mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft but medium carbonation, taste lingers a little bit, pretty heavy stuff, alcohol is low but you can taste a bit of it, malt profile is boring and spices take over later on, not very smooth, probably would not drink again, still might be worth trying

So today I'm walking around Whole Foods in Pasadena, and see a bottle of Skyscraper Winter Warmer on sale! I think why not?! It's a local Brewery just down the street in El Monte.

I chilled the beer for a couple hours (it had been chilled at the store too):

Appearance is a deep copper amber with a nice creamy head that sticks around for a couple minutes and keeps a nice trace as you sip on it. Good clarity as you put it to the light, you find yourself falling in love in the moment (last beer of the night before bed).

Smell is a bit off putting. Clove aroma but not from esters, This beer has clove in it. No hop aroma but a bit of malt if you can get pass the natural clove aroma.

Taste is dry from the use of honey that dries out the beer, but more so the use of nutmeg, cinnamon and clove just numb the mouth! It's a nice idea to use winter spices in a winter warmer but they truly numb the mouth and you can't taste much of anything but a sour after taste...

The beer has a medium light body with light carbonation.

The price wasn't wrong for under 3 dollars but i can't find myself drinking much of this brew since the spices are just so odd but i know they meant well.

On-tap at Hollingshead's Deli, in Orange, CA,

A: Pours a medium brown, with a moderately full tan head, no real lacing, but looks pretty good.

S: Christmas smelling, spices, malt, molasses cookies.

T: The label on the bottled version says brewed with honey and spices(nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves), and they are all evident here. There is a clear sugary honey sweetness along with the dark malt, sort of like a rum-soaked fruitcake. Nutmeg is the most evident spice, but the cinnamon is clear as well, the cloves are much harder to get to, but there is a clear hint of them in the finish. Above average in this category for sure.

M: Smooth, a little on the light side for this style, medium-bodied, winter spicey.

D: A nice surprise from the local El Monte Brewery. While not impressed with their Lug Nut Lager, I thought this beer was very well done, an enjoyable experience. Rare, even in SoCal, the guy at Hollingshead's said they made about 6 cases, but definitely worth a try during the Yuletide Christmas season.
