overall this place is kind of like a tiny warehouse as compared to a home-brew local store, ive purchased from here multiple times and really love what they are able to offer, i purchased charlie papazians book here as well as my brew kit and three of my recipe kits, the help is hit or miss here however, ive been helped greatly by some but, unfortunately, there was one older gentleman working there who gave me a book on wine making when i had made it blatantly clear i was looking for beer making supplies, prices are pretty much what i would expect. they do have one awesome feature which is a punch card which when you purchase a certain amount you get 25 bucks for free which is always a plus, although i wish they would have a more comprehensive posing of their fresh all grain ingredients (an area in which i would like to delve a bit more). overall a good store and one i will continue to visit

I stopped in on whim while in town. Hammersmith has recently expanded and is now quote large. I believe they give good advice, and seem to lean towards more wine supplies. Wine kits out numbered beer 5 to 1. They also had selection of local honey, which was nice to see as well.

This place seemed very expensive veruss ordering online. However, if you are brewer and need those last minute items for your brew day it is nice to have a local suppply.

It is located right off the highway and is easy to find. Albany should be happy to have there own homebrew shop!

This was my first beer store and they do a great job, ide say also that they are pretty evenly split between wine and beer. They are really curteous and if you have a specific recipe you want to make, you can just bring them the recipe and they will put it together for you, htye have a good variety of beer kits to buy as well. They dont have some more specific tools, like copper tubing for cooling the beer, but i have gotten an auto-siphon, bottle cleaner that attaches to the kitchen sink and bottle rack there, and they carry kegging systems as well. my only complaint is that they use precrushed specialty malt, which is nice when you have limited space etc.. but doesnt provide as good as possible when you want to put in the effort, or can. They have a tendancy to be short on a specific yeast or malt extract but if you call them and ask them to stock it before you need it, or are willing to come back they will get anything you need.

Hammersmith is my primary homebrew shop, and rightfully so. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer in that Hammersmith is not mostly devoted to wine; it's split fairly evenly between wine and beer supplies. The folks that work there are tremendously helpful; at one point even going online to help find me a fish monger in the area when I mentioned, off-handedly, that I was planning to make sushi that night. Other than being overly curtious, they have a very specific knowledge of the process and are eager to help without being intrusive. They produce their own extract kits, which, so far, have worked out well. They sell growlers, bottles, a good selection of 20+ kits, fresh ingredients, full start-up kits, etc. They also provide a membership card that gives a 25$ discount for every 250$ spent, which at first seems neglible but will provide you with, say, a free bottling rack, grolsch style growler, or extract kit - which is always nice. Definitely worth the trip from Albany.

Hammersmith is primarily a wine homebrew place, but they do carry a great selection of beer kits and limited supplies as well. However, the best part about Hammersmith is the service. I was looking for a hard to find White Labs Sour Mix yeast, and no one seemed to have it or be able to get it. They got me the yeast in 1 week. They are lacking in the more advanced equipment and supplies area however. The store is very small and mostly concentrated on wine supplies. It is a great store though. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking to get a kit to brew or looking for simple grains and yeasts; or someone looking for something tough to find.

Edit: On return visits, I have found more grain selection than I originally had found and raised the rating for selection. In addition, the variety of beer kits is very good.
