8.5 brown bottle with serial number T32651, from the 2008 vintage (celebrating 40 years), poured into old speckeld hen pint glass

A - pours a good sized head, with an off white color. the body is brown with some burn orange hues shining through the light. head retention is average, shrinking to half the size in about 3 minutes. a bit on the light side from my experience with old ales.

S - smells absolutely amazing. however this does not smell like any old ale I have incountered. there are many fruits and alcohol, especially alcohol. though it smells incredible, I cannot say I am impressed with the way it should smell, it should be far more tame in my opinion; this is far more fitting for a belgian dark strong. I smell the acidity of pineapple, the dull sweetness from banana, and some spices in the far back ground. the malts with their sweetness dominate the foreground while some hops, I suppose, lend a subtle back bone to add complexity and depth.

T - the initial taste is very strong of alcohol. the burn is, however, reduced by the banana like sweetness; it is not a whole hearted saccharine sweetness that dominates the palate, but the under workings of the malts are strong enough to even out the intense effects of the alcohol. the finish can be described as a battle between really ripe fruits and the alcohol, which wants to burn up the palate. the fruits are more sweet at this point, like dried prune and figs; it is only till the swallow that the alcohol wins out and gets to burn the back of my throat. a satisfyingly good battle fought. the after taste is more sweet than dry from alcohol, the fruits are unidentifiable, but as the alcohol does subside from the swallow, their sweetness and a grain like taste comes out.

MF&D - nothing really special. there is a minimal ammount of carbonation in this brew, which makes the booze more potent and noticeable to the palate. not a problem for myself, though not something I would give my girlfriend or mother.

2007 bottle (06784) Birthday beer!

Appearance: It has a nice ruby/deep amber color to it. It has almost no head and leaves next to no lacing

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of dark fruit (plenty of raisins and figs), a tone of sweet caramel, toffee, brown sugar, slight vanilla and molasses. Wow this thing smells great.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some dark fruit (sweet raisins and figs - almost tart) caramel/toffee, sweet brown sugar and molasses. Yummm!

Mouthfeel: It has a very low carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas.

8.5 FL OZ Bottle, year 2005, P48388.

After the excess of New Years Eve I thought I'd slow down a bit and have a couple of beers to savour. I've been saving this for a rainy day and on 1st Jan 2014 it's honking down in Shropshire.

Poured into a Chimay chalice it produced no head and looked very Port like, a lot of Port actually.

The aroma and taste are so 'un-beer': Sherry and Port more than a Barley Wine, sweet, very sweet. Reminded me of that uber sweet Cypriot Commandaria St John I used to gulp years ago.

A lovely 1st beer of 2014.
