There are two types of Belgian IPAs-- those that are basically American IPA recipes, fermented with belgian yeasts (Stone IPA, LeFreak), and Belgian beers that use an aggressive approach to hopping (XX Bitter, Xtra Gold). This beer is an example of the latter.

Beer pours a cloudy golden with a huge dense head. Aroma is tropical fruit and a sugary sweetness which does not manifest itself in the flavor. This bottle has been in my fridge for a few months, so it does not really have a huge hop nose like a fresh example would. The strong point of this beer is the ultra-dry mouthfeel, which leaves an impression very much like a saison. This is a lovely beer, not the best that Het Anker has to offer, but quite good.

A style Iam just now starting to go to,there are some things I like, and dont like of the style.Poured into a large tulip glass a light hazed blond color with a huge blooming white head,to much so I think.A mix of leafy-lemony hop, slight funk, and yeasty spice in the nose.A lighter but creamy feel in the mouth, very nice, almost airy in a good way.Flavors are medicinal and herbal from the onset, some phenols come in as well.Well its not the American hopped Raging Bitch, but I respect the beer, just not enough of the hop oomph I look for.

Appearance - The head came up perfectly on an easy pour. It was white and puffy and showed good retention. The lacing left on the inside of my glass was remarkable - some of the most complex that I've seen.

Smell - This is some of the strongest Belgian hopping that I've ever smelled. It is extremely rich with loads of depth. It is a fascinating combination of strong subtleness if that makes any sense. The hop aroma is not sharp or harsh but it is incredibly deep and powerful - very vegetative in the best possible way.

There are some classic Belgian spices here to boot. The coriander especially rings in the nose and the white pepper that you find in some BSPAs is here tenfold.

Taste - The intensity from the nose comes out big time at the taste. The spices in particular are huge. If the nose made its mark with balance the taste is thrown into overdrive. The leafy hops will snap your eyes open and there is truly a handsome malt base to this one as well.

Mouthfeel - This is well above medium-bodied with some mild but stubborn carbonation and a presence of bitterness, especially at the finish.

Drinkability - This would undoubtedly have to be the best drink on the planet coming out of a cask. From the bottle it is only slightly short of perfect. It is high-quality Belgian brewing at its best. I'm a big fan of this brewery to begin with but this definitely put me in the "sold" column.

A: A golden beer with brilliant clarity. Pours with three fingers of thick sticky foam

S: A spicy and fruit aroma with medium-strong spicy and earthy hops blending with pepper, peach and apricot note from the yeast. Some Pilsner malt aroma with a light honey-like malt sweetness and a sweet, moderate alcohol note.

T: Medium pepper fermentation character and earthy hops dominate with a noticeable alcohol sweetness. There is a medium malt sweetness and strong hops bitterness giving a balance that is very bitter. The off-dry finish is followed by an aftertaste of hops bitterness and fruity.

M: A medium bodied beer with a strong level of carbonation and a light alcohol warmth.

O: A bitter beer with a fair amount of hops flavor and aroma, this bottle seems like it might be a bit older but far from flat, old hops character. Additionally this would probably still be an excellent beer even if it had been aged I'd just be approaching it more like a triple than an IPA style.

Draft at Brasserie Het Anker

Pours a very cloud light golden brown with two fingers of craggy white head. Head has very good retention and coats the glass with lacing.

Aroma is mostly Belgian yeast, with lots of fruity esters. Not much in the way of hops in the aroma.

Hops are relatively light but present enough to leave a nice slight bitterness throughout the taste. Otherwise, pleasant Belgian yeast taste with some fruity esters, including a bit of banana. These flavors seem like they should clash more than they do, but overall this is a pleasant beer, and after a few days in Belgium, the hop bitterness is much appreciated.

750ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden yellow with a HUGE rocky white head that retains well.

The aroma is sweet bready malts and some floral pilsner style hops (saaz).

The flavor is sweet bready malts with a decent amount of bitterness in the hops. There are some metallic skunky off-notes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lots of sharp carbonation.

Overall, tastes like an imperial pilsner. It's not well balanced, fiarly flawed, and doesn't really appeal to me.

750 ml bottle, corked and caged, thanks to mntlover for bringing this one by. Pours a hazy, yellow/golden body with an immense vanilla head that pillows and pits. Sticky clump lacing.

Aroma is a showcase of Belgian IPA style hops. Herbal, grassy, spicy and floral. The better Belgian IPAs share a very distinguished nose.

Mouthfeel has a velvety, tingly carbonation that enlivens the medium body. Some earthiness here, as well.

Taste is on the dry and bitter side. Herbal and floral hops take star billing. Soft notes of sweet maltiness offer up a nice balance. Belgian yeast is apparent, and fruity and spicy notes add ample complexity. Finishes dry and herbal.

A real pleasure. Belgian IPA's are complex and interesting, and don't fry your tastebuds like many of their American counterparts.

Finally caught up with a bottle of this stuff, thanks Biscodoll for the info and heads up...Belgian bomber, caged/corked w/o freshness info. Pours super cloudy, medium apricot, near white head, hugely heady, moderately retentive, marainge producing, leaving TONS of wild and crazy lace and sheeting. The nose is heavily citric and generally tropical fruity and minty. I'm a sucker for the style so I was excited to try this stuff. No disappointments here, plenty of biting hops up front, Belgian yeasts and peppery spice all over the mouth and a bright, flavorful finish to seal the deal. Nice beer. Belgian lovers rejoice and go get some of this stuff.

The beer pours a hazy gold color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the perfume, with some orange citrus and bread malt notes thrown in. The flavor is similar, with the floral notes really standing out initially. There is also some bread and grass, as well as some Belgian yeast and a low amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Single bottle from the LCBO spring release. Was very happy with Carolus's other two Ontario releases, so I was looking forward to this.

Poured into a Chimay goblet. Ridiculous foam on this fellow, a good inch and a half. Made for some great photos, but damn it took forever to settle. Great retention, lots of lacing. A light peachy-golden hue, opaque, with wisps of sediment collecting at the base of the glass.

Nose is yeast, spice, peach, lemon, herbal hops.

A nice Belgian ale, tart and spicy, good yeast character. Wheat husks and fruit open things off, while the hops provided a nice dry tang to the finish. Reminded me of grapefruit juice a little bit. Alcohol kicks in just as the flavor leaves the tongue.

Thick, creamy, strong carbonation at first, but settles down.

Pretty fine brew. Alcohol crept up on me though. Will pick up another bottle or two for the cellar.

Served in a chilled glass.

Appearance - beer pours with a TREMENDOUS amount of white fluffy head, impressive actually! Their is some good lasting power to the head as well. The beer is a very hazy straw colour, but if you look hard you can still see some carbonation. there is some very nice lacing.

Smell - i can smell some banana, cloves, hops and some spices. there is also some earthy tones hinted in there.

taste - very good tasting beer, i can pick up the banana's as well the spices. there is a slight hint of the alcohol in this beer. the bitterness at the end is good, not a lasting flavour.

mouthfeel - loads of carbonation in the mouthfeel. very good tasting beer, the banana and hops comes fwd. the bitterness comes from the spices near the end.

drinkability - very decent beer, i found the alcohol wasnt well hidden, but the beer was very good.

New offering from Het Anker, it does not disapoint.

Reviewd from notes a.k.a. the land before highspeed.

Poured from a corked and caged 750ml into an over sized wine glass. This necter pours and amazing cloudy yellow that literally seems to glow. Massive 4 finger head that sticks like glue to the sides of my glass and refuses to let go. Fantastic head retention.

Nose- Belgian yeast, prevelant hops, citrus and hints of sweet ripe pear.

Taste- WoW this is a very nice Belgian IPA. Citrus, lemon rind, melon. Intense bitternessin finish that almost puckers your cheeks. Faint mineral qualities (think savigion blanc), very crisp and refreshing. Booze is very well hidden. Well done!

Mouthfeel-Buttery, creamy, yet light. Long bitter finish. Cleansing carbonation and lemon zest quality.

Drinkability- Highly drinkable, especially so on a hot day!

Hats off to Het Anker. Seek out!

about an 8 oz serving on tap at pizza plant.

pours a slightly cloudy pale yellow golden color, pure white head with great retention and tons of sticky lace.

the aroma is mostly lemon citrus hops and bubblegum like belgian yeast.

the tasty follows suit with lemon citrus and spicy hops with phenolic, bubblegum belgian yeast flavor. decent hop bitterness.

pretty light on the mouthfeel, decent carb,

fairly easy to drink, worth a try, but there are better more readily available belgian ipas out there.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Cloudy, yellowish-amber appearance. Lots of tropical fruit and earthy, spicy tones in the nose. Hard to contain this one with the crazy Belgian head, which forms a giant pearlescent pillow atop this tasty brew. Huge peppery spiciness on the tongue, presumably a product of the masterful mingling of four different hop varieties, along with tropical fruit flavors. Just awesome. Nice, substantial mouthfeel with lively carbonation. At 8.00% it can get tricky to have more than a few glasses. But boy, are those few good.

Had this on tap at Toronado, SF.

Nose is full of coriander, citrus and a musky farmhouse maltiness with light and vibrant floral hops. Goodness from the Old-World!

All in all this is a very nicely balanced Belgian IPA, not too over the top but rather delicate and light with a nice contrast between the malts, alcohol, hops, spice and yeast.

As far as I am concerned this is a style I can drink a lot of since it doesn't develop any obnoxious flavors or aromas at all and has just the right amount of lingering sweetness on the palate.

A very elegant example of this style.
