330ml bottle poured into a Troubadour tulip glass

Look: Pours a murky straw yellow with a fairly loose, bubbly head. Massive amount of lacing once the head had subsided.

Smell: Quite earthy and hoppy - not a lot else was discernable. Certainly not unpleasant.

Taste: This is where it gets interesting - although the beer smells rather hoppy, the initial taste is definitely more malty with a hint of resin. There are hints of boozy alcohol there, but malts and resins are well forward.

Feel: Quite a spicy mouthfeel with an almost spiritous aftertaste. For something that's 8% ABV this is quite dangerously drinkable. Despite the ludicrous amount of head on pouring, the carbonation diminished fairly quickly leaving a pleasant fizziness.

Overall: My first encounter with the Belgian IPA style and I suspect that it won't be my last. Not as insanely hoppy as American IPAs but then again this certainly doesn't drink like an 8% beer. As I type this, the current BA score is 91 (outstanding) and I'm finding little to disagree with - definitely worth seeking out.

330 ml bottle poured into a tulip. Date on bottle 10/05/12.

A- Hazy bronze in color. Some white highlight. Towering cloud of white foam. Beautiful rings and lines of lacing. A really awesome looking beer.

S- Heavy caramel. Very mild earthy hop. Faint, dark fruit.

T- Light caramel flavor. Toasty malt. A bit like fruitcake. Faint earth and pine.

M- Very carbonated. Lost some beer on the pour, it was coming out so fast. Body is medium, smooth, slightly spicy. Finish is just a bit dry. Definitely doesn't drink like an 8%.

O- I think the hops have faded on this one, but it really had a lot of depth and character. Tastes more like a Belgian Pale. I'd like to try it again fresh.
