Appearance: hazy pale yellow in color with a 1/2" head that lasted a while. Light lacing paints the glass.

Smell: spices and green apples are most noticeable, some softer earthy tones are in the background.

Taste: caramel, yeast, pepper, green apples, pears, and a strong warming alcohol are the main flavor components. Bitterness is mild.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp throughout. Medium bodied beers. Aftertaste is dominated by alcohol warming.

Drinkability: very flavorful beer that is a slow sipper based on the alcohol level.

On tap at the Brick Store.

Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a huge pillowy white head that stays on as a cap for ages and leaves very good lacing.

Light sweet aroma with light fruits and hints of spices on top. There is plenty of Belgian yeast and bubble gum sweetness as well with a bit of citrus.

The taste is slightly sweeter than the aroma with lots of light sweetness featuring apples and pears. The Belgian yeast forms a solid backbone with a slightly dry finish with some citrus hops.

The moutfeel is fairly light with tons of carbonation and lots of sticky sweetness throughout.

This isn't the biggest or most complex Belgian pale but it's extremely drinkable. Recommended.

Yeasty nose is slightly offputting. But the initial sweetness with apricots, pears, and clove is very nice. Boozy with a hot alcohol finish that is nice in that it is dry, but does not balance as well as it should. Nice carbonation. I don't get the sick-sweetness that some others have alluded to. I think there is enough spiciness here to firm it up a bit so that it is more refreshing than syrupy. Overall, not a classic, but very good.

2008 bottle 750 picked up at the Coop over the weekend for about $9.50.. shared with Brenda .. slightly .. mostly poured into my New Belgium snifter... I was very happy that Matt was able to get this one in.. I did NOT want to try and trade for it.. yet really wanted to give it a go around because the BSDA from this brewery is always stellar and a cellar favorite of mine.

The cork comes out.. so does a fizzy creep that makes me pour it fast.... 2 finger head died back incredibly quick .. sounded like rice crispies.. only touches of lace atop a hazy golden yellow brew... the lace only shows as the brew in the glass drops... but it is a very nice sheet with every sip.

Nose is fruity with notes of pear and green apple... peppery and spicy but not nearly as much as most BSPA's.. quite a bit of sugar as it warms... flowery and clove.. some cardamom (I don't like cardamom)..

Very sweet maltiness throughout the palate.. again.. pear and apple essence.. but the sugary taste may be a bit much... phenolic and spicy.. more cardamom and white pepper.. some clove.. but IMHO.. waaay too sweet.. an odd honey essence that reminds me of the honey bear in the cupboard...

I can see how many brew connoisseurs will like this one .. even love it.. but for me.. it is just too sweet.. the spicy phenols help.. and fruity esters are there with every burp.. but overall.. it just seems outtawhack.. too much of a good thing and never really comes together.. the body is fairly thick with a big burning carbonation.. the drinkability suffers horribly with me because of the residual sweetness.. otherwise a pretty great beer that just needs to be dialed back a couple of notches.

I will try and buy another couple of these just to stick in the basement and forget about.. I would worry about the carbonation.. it was already creeping out of the bottle as soon as I cracked the cork.

Caged and corked Jarang 2008.

Poured into Pilsner Urquell flutes, enjoyed with my brother as an appertiff on Boxing Day.

App: very pale straw, light golden akin to Bohemian Pilsners and Duvel in color. Nice two finger thick dense white head, very effervescent.

Smell: Belgian yeast spice and cracked white pepper, some rosy perfume alcohols and just ripe pear and baked apple. Some notes of faint minty hops.

Taste/MF/Drinkability: Clean with a light belgian yeast derived spice character, a touch of hops but scrubbed very quickly by the big carbonation. Slight alcohol warming but extremely palatable and quaffable for the overall strength. Deceptive like a fine Belgian Strong Pale should be.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy golden color with quite a large white, foamy head that sticks like none other.

Smell: Alcoholic, spicy, yeasty. Like a rum-soaked spice cake straight out of the oven.

Taste: Somewhat reminiscent of Delirium Tremens, but more well-rounded. Spice hits strongly on the palate: cloves, pink peppercorns, anise seeds, and a little bit of cardamom all flesh out a nice, buttery floral bouquet on the palate. Finishes dry with a strong phenolic aftertaste.

Overall: This is a nice complement, if not antithesis of the Gouden Carolus Cuvee van de Keizer Blauw/Bleu. Great for sipping, and very full-bodied overall.

Big bottle into Atlas Mason jar.

A: Nice white three finger head over a slightly hazy blonde body. Very nice lacing and head retention.

S: Big boozy nose with the Belgian yeast shining through.

T: This is a strong one. Booze and orange zestiness and clove and bitter grape peel on the get go then pepper and spices that go back to an almost vodka flavor then to a dry almost cracker taste.

M: Nice medium to full body on this strong lass with lots of nice natural carbonation.

D: Woo this is a strong one. Just one bottle please. But this bottle can last half the night if sipped on properly. A great strong ale!

Reviewed on 8/20/08. Bottle. What a gusher!! Watch out for this one. Pours a dull colored orange with a huge thick, foamy white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast and spices, light fruits (apple, pear). Flavor is initially quite spicy with some hop bitterness and alcohol, finishes sweet. A bit on the boozy side and not that much flavor.

This beer poured a clear golden color and formed a huge pillowy foamy snow white head that refused to subside and coated the glass with lace. A medium amount of carbonation is present. An aroma of malt, citrus, Belgian yeasts, hops and spices. The flavor was of malt, hops, bread, pepper and phenolics. The body is fairly light and the finish rather sprite yet peppery.

2008 Bottling; Sampled December 2008
A soft pour produces a voluminous, initially three-finger thick, that quickly grows to five fingers (including a finger and a half above the rim of my 25cl tulip glass) and rolls over the sides of the glass a bit before I can suck off some of the pillow-like, tightly beaded, pale, tan tinged head. Of course lots of lacing accompanies a slow falling of the head as well. The beer is a brilliantly clear, bright gold color that wonderfully shows an excited, bountiful carbonation of streaming bubbles. The aroma is also quite expressive with a vibrant spicy fruitiness to it that is noticeable as I pour. Aromas of ripe melon, honeysuckle, pear, some Macintosh apple and star fruit are supported by spice notes of phenolic clove, sweet ginger, an herbal pepper note and a touch of lemon grass. There is a nice pale malt character here that accentuates a touch of wildflower honey, some grassy grain notes and a nice finish of crushed whole grain crackers.

This beer tastes somewhat sweet, but still manages to finish with a dry effect. Spicy, estery, higher alcohols, a soft, clean hop bitterness and a lingering phenolic spice character help to dry the finish out. Substantial notes of clove (especially towards the lingering finish), lemon zest, a touch of cardamom, some white pepper and perhaps a touch of sweet ginger round out the spice flavors. This gets quite phenolic in the finish and the alcohol accentuates this quite a bit. Up front the esters produce fruit notes of pear, honeydew melon, citrus honey, golden raisin (this can almost have a desert wine sort of note to it at times), . The beer is definitely light for a beer of this strength, though the piquancy of the phenolics and alcohol keep this from being quaffable (which, ultimately is a good thing).

On my second pour, I still end up with a voluminous head that threatens to over flow the sides of my glass. Repeated gulps of foamy, pear-scented cotton candy like, head finally has the head settled in. If this wasn't so phenolic in the finish it would be a phenomenal beer. This is a fairly minor flaw, but it is the last thing one notices after each sip. All in all this is a very tasty beer that is quite enjoyable; visually this beer is stunning, it is exactly what I could ask for in a pale, strong, Belgian beer.

pours a semi-clear yellow-orange with a large white foamy head, heavy carbonation, good lacing.

smell is faint, pear, peach, and some spice.

taste has lots of carbonation to it, sweet fruit, malt, a little caramel in the back, nice ending with a little spicy kick.

I bought this nottle (750ml, corked & caged) for $9.99 at Whole Foods in Columbus. This was the first time I've seen this version from Gouden Carolus, "Special Blond of the Emperor". The beer was pale yellow color with a little haze, and a thin but lasting film of bubbles. The smell is really good, honey and sweet malts, similar to Grotten ale from St Bernardus (high praise). The taste is just as good, this could be Barbar or Grotten ale rebottled. Near-perfect flavor and drinkability, this is great beer.

(Bottle) Pours golden with a huge white head. The aroma is of doughy, ester-ish and spicy yeast with undertones of candi sugar, pears, red/yellow apples, fresh and dried oranges, tart white grapes, subtle tropical fruits, mild lime, bubblegum, wine gum, vanilla powder, fresh nutmeg, coriander, mild white pepper and almond paste. Also some hospital/clove-like phenols. The malt and the aromatic hops bring tones of grain, dry crackers, white bread, spices, fresh grass and mild flowers. Wood dry hints from the alcohol, yet elegant on the nose. At the same time, there is a good deal of almond paste sweetness present. The alcohol warmth also holds some hints of nail polish. The flavour is of mild citric and fresh spicy with balanced tones of herbal hops, cracker/white bread-like malt, candi sugar and some phenolic hints lurking in the background. Hints of nutmeg, pepper, tart white grapes, apples and pears, black wine gums are all notable. The mouthfeel is dry (some sweetness in the beginning), round and clean without being lifeless with a carbonation that adds some champagne-like qualities. In the aftertaste linger phenols, citrus, candi sugar and a light bitter hop sting. Medium to full bodied. A very well made example of the style.

750 ml bottle. 2008.

Smell: yeast, different fruits (apricot, pears, mandarin, maybe some peaches as well), some kind of sweet candy, notes of almonds, spices. Nice belgian smell.

Taste: fruity - apricot, mandarin, pear - also some sweet malt, and spices (think I found some mint among them, otherwise they were hard to nail down), and some notes of almonds. Mouthfeel and body are nice, nothing to complain about there; however, there is a lot of alcohol in the taste, which was pretty disturbing.

Overall: nice belgian blonde with lots of flavors, but too much alcohol in the taste.

A - Served into a St. Feuillien globe. 2 fingers of frothy white foam, fed by tons of carbonation. Golden, ultra-carbonated body. Frothy lace.

S - Yeasty esters. Tons of flowers and spices. Slight hoppy spiciness. Belgian yeast and Belgian candied sugar.

T - Extremely unique. Sweet, and I mean *real* sweet. Alcohol comes and goes... sweet berries, strawberry, peaches, white pepper, candy sugar.

M - Crisp yet thick. Creamy yet sparkly. Nice.

D - Near-cloying sweetness and alcohol limit this a little more than my other fave BSPA's, but still relatively tasty.

Poured into snifter. Color was hazy yellow with half inch white head, dissipating to nothing. No lacing.

Smell was candi sugar, carmel malt, spicy hops, some bready notes and a nice subtle sour woody smell.

Taste was over-carbonated, bursting bubbles in the sharp mouthfell. Goes down a sweet carmel, with some sourness followed by a ornge pell bitterness. I liked the use of hops in this beer, but it all gets lost in the champagne like body.

After letting this beer sit an hour, the flavors came together a little better. Opened this for holloween last night left about 8oz. in bottle overnight, then drank in the morning and it was much more drinkable. Tasting a liitle like a blonde Chimay. My advise would be to let this breath for a couple hours, then drink. Or better yet put this in the cellar for a couple years then enjoy. Not ready now!

Appearance: Pours a clear, blonde body with a very tall, very white head.

Smell: Sweet-smelling, phenolic, a bit boozy, and simply chock full of rich fruitiness. Plenty of spice and fresh herbs as well. Pinch of yeast.

Taste: Sweet, sugary maltiness mixed with a herbal gentian taste, star anise, dried orange peel, and heavy-handed dose of pepper and spices. Fairly phenolic throughout. Fruity flavors of white grapes, peaches, green apples, and under-ripe plums. Minor hint of vanilla upon warming. Oh, and a big wallop of booze near the end. Candi sugar taste perks up now and again. Finishes dry and warming with a lingering mingling of perfumy, grapefruity components.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Well carbonated.

Drinkability: It's certainly not subtle, as there's tons going on here. A bit alcoholic initially, but once it starts coursing through your system you learn to live with it, even enjoy it, and focus on the expressive fruit character and punchy phenols. Still though, I'd stick with the blue, babies!

2008 vintage, 750ml bottle poured into a tulip.

A = Clear golden yellow with bone white frothy head, very good retention, as head settles it goes slowly from foam to large bubbles leaving intricate spidery lacing. Good steady carbonation consisting of small bubbles.

S = Sweet Belgian candy, like spun sugar with tart fruit or berries extract, some earthy yeast smells.

T = Sweet candy up front, light bitterness appears mid-palate and toward the back of the mouth is some cream which appears but then quickly gives way to the bitterness again.

M = Very fine bubbles like good champagne tickle the mouth and coats it well. Some light alcohol burn contributes positively as well.

D = This one is a very good drinker even with the high and noticeable ABV.

Pours a very pale golden color with tons of carbonation and an immense white rocky head that goes nowhere. Great lacing sticks to the glass. Smells of honey, candy sugar, belgian yeast, spices, pear, very pleasant. Smells a lot better than it tastes. Initial sip, while still very cold, was extremely biting with alcohol. Bitter, extremely phenolic. As it warmed up, more flavors came through like doughy malts, the yeast, some honey, hops, but the alcohol presence was still very much there. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, extremely carbonated, with a somewhat dry finish. Drinkability factor definitely lacks.

It's a dark golden colored beer with a fully lasting head, purely Belgian, it laces well on the glass. Nose of dough and cookie, bready malts, polish and fruit. Smells Belgian, but doesn't seem to have a lot of refinement. Flavor has a bit too much strength and doesn't have a lot of delicacy or complexity. Sweet, it possesses heavy notes of light fruits and alcohol. This Belgian misses the mark.

It's like a Duvel... on steroids.

It's my first Het Anker beer, and wow, what a way to start. Alex @ Red Carpet told me that the Blue label was his favorite beer, period... well, this alone makes me believe that's possible.

Pours like a Duvel, a brilliant, crystal clear straw gold with massive amounts of creamy, rich, thick, brilliant white head. Awesome organic lacing all the way down.

Aroma is a clean, ester-bomb. Yes, if there's hop bombs and malt bombs, there need be ester bombs. Which isn't to say that there isn't an underlying graininess and sweetness, but a light banana and bubble gum aroma with a warm, nutmeggy spice. As it warms there's maybe the suggestion of fusel alcohol... but this is good stuff. 4.5 might be low.

The taste is a clean, bready sweetness, almost honey-like sweetness, with a crisp, dry, dry finish. The sweetness through the middle is round and substantial without being cloying, very clean in the finish. The bubble gum is stronger than the banana here, but both are present, and the spice really seems more like a hoppy, resiny spice here. As it warms, the alcohol DOES become more noticeable, but it is not overpowering at all, and seems appropriate for a beer this big.

Medium bodied and crisp, spritely carbonic.

This might get slightly higher scores (?!!?) in a couple months, it still seems a TAD on the hot side... hopefully that doesn't correspond to a more subdued aroma, but I can't wait to revisit. This is superb, and immediately a favorite.

Review Number 250. Served in my Maudite tulip. Poured a translucent orange-gold with a dense, two-inch bright white head and copious tiny bubbles evident in solution. Strands of sticky lacing spotted the sidewalls of the glass during the tasting. Alcohol was clearly identifiable in the nose, followed by candi sugar, belgian yeast and a hint of tropical fruit (perhaps passion fruit) detectable at the back. Taste consistent with nose, as well as a citrus astringency present up front; however, flavors are somewhat masked by the alcohol. Consistency is between light- and medium-bodied with a considerable carbonation burn concentrated up front and then dispersed throughout the mouth, with a booziness that lingers at the finish. Nice offering, but drinkability is impacted by the over-representation of alcohol imposed on the senses.

Corked and caged massive brown 1 pint 9.4oz glass bottle.
Straw golden transparent body with low carbonation and a huge white head that falls after a few minutes and leaves clumpy lace. Small to large bubbles.
Strong sweet sugary scent with several over ripe fruits and clear notes of alcohol.
Sweet malty flavor with an alcohol bite. Like the scent, the flavor has over ripe banana, cherries, pear and prune notes. The hops are clearly present and imparts a spicy kick. The aftertaste is fairly short but intense while it lasts.
Medium body with lots of residual sugars.
Good drinkability. An improvement would be toning down the alcohol presence.

A - Light golden with 2 fingers of fluffy white head.

S - Spicy Belgian yeast, candied fruits mixed with tropical fruit, ripe bananas and bubble gum.

T - Ripe, spicy, candied fruit followed by floral and citrus finishing dry with an earthy, spicy pepper.

M - Medium bodied with lively carbonation, somewhat biting mixed with the spiciness but not in the fizzy sense. Warming alcohol, slightly noticeable in the taste, with a dry finish.

D - Complex and tasty. A little sweet. I would like to try this one with a little age on it.

A: Light golden yellow with a fluffly white head. Great lacing on this one

S: Wonderfully complex with mild hops, bubble gum, spices - mace and fennel. Delicious

T: Starts off sweet and spicy with sugary sweetness followed by a floral character. Dries up on the finish with a definite peppery and earthy character. Great stuff.

M: Light in body, great carbonation and great finish

D: For a 10% brew, this is dangerously drinkable
