Excellent Tripel. Poured from 750 ml bottle into an Omme Gang goblet. Deep, golden musky color. Excellent creamy head. Plenty of hops and a slight tangy citrus flavor. Feels nice and thick going down.

Nice beer to enjoy with a seafood dinner such as sauteed shrimp, scallops, stuffed lobster tail, etc. Not the best to pair with a cigar as they really don't mix well.

After your first few mouthful's, you start to appreciate the alcohol content.

Just sit back and enjoy this one.

750 ml bottle into chalice, bottled on 6/20/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear bright golden color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lemon, orange zest, apricot, pear, apple, white grape, pepper, coriander, candi sugar, cracker, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, spice, and pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big lemon, orange zest, apricot, pear, apple, white grape, pepper, coriander, candi sugar, cracker, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange zest, pear, apple, white grape, pepper, coriander, candi sugar, cracker, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Outstanding complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, spice, and pale malt flavors; with a great crisp malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Quite dry on the finish as well for the gravity. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding tripel style. All around awesome complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast, spice, and pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Golden cloudy, almost peach color in the light. Exploding foamy coating.
Citrus and sour smell, a little alcohol. Hoppy and lemony taste, slightly sweet.
Feels a little zesty but thin, strong alcohol aftertaste, almost vinous.

Overall : Good beer with a taste too sharp, and missing some texture.

Poured from 750ml bottle into a snifter.

Appearance: Pours ultra pale gold with a just off white head. Carbonation is ultra high vigorous bubbles stream consistently from the bottom of the glass. The beer is just a touch cloudy. The head appears to be the center of attention here. Rocketing from the glass on a gentle pour it quickly rose to the rim of the snifter only to retreat about 3 minutes later. The head looks more like it was chiseled from stone as opposed to created by mear bubbles and some protein. Micro dotted solid sheets of lace coat the entire class. A truly amazing looking beer. Only knock would be its slight haze but I believe its an acceptable amount.

Aroma: Fruity esters of all sorts jump out of the glass, hints of green apple, blueberry, peach mixed with cake batter or sweet bread. Also lemon lime citrus and some herbal (cilantro?) character that give it a bit of spice and complexity. Some banana comes through later and a little bit of cut grass. Hard to nail down this beer begs to be smelled and the aroma is constantly evolving as it warms. Excellent.

Taste: Slight citrus character like lemongrass, strong musty notes like damp cellar. Smooth and crisp slight graininess and very dry. Tastes only slightly sweet at pallet entry and that is washed away by the mild citrus notes and dry cracker maltiness. Slightly warming as its swallowed. Small amount of banana on the finnish and exhale. Crisp clean to the point with no fuss or distractions.

Feel: Full, crisp , never ending waves of carbonation that enhance every detail of flavor. Viscosity is flawless.

Overall: An excellent beer. No flaws and nothing to argue about and for $9.75 for a 750ml its one of the best priced belgians you can get for the dollar. Stop hunting whales and just drink good beer.

Appearance: amber, heady white froth, fine carbonation

Smell: slightly malty, pear, honey .

Taste: Sweet, flowery up front without being syrupy, pleasant astringent quality from very carbonation and mild hops.clean finish.

Overall: Very good, excellent example of the style. Would purchase again.

Pours a clear gold with huge dense tower of foam, settles slowly to a half inch that stays, with a thick sheet of styrofoamy lace down the glass. Smell: out of the bottle it was a little windex-y but thankfully that faded before the head... slightly boozy, apple cake, apple juice, coriander, thyme-y herbal note. Less sweet than most and a bit aggressive / astringent. Taste: unripe pear, soft apple, sugared dried apricot, and grape skin. This is nice, but then it's similarly oddly astringent, finishing with pepper and grassy notes. Medium bodied, finishes a bit slimy and sticky. Definitely different. I think I'd rate it higher if it was lower abv and not labeled 'tripel'...it's interesting.

Excellent and very fruity aroma.

Good flavor but doesn't quite keep up with the quality of the aroma. It's a bit too sweet until the mildly bitter and tart finish.

Light body. Little noticeable effect of the nitro.

Bottled either...March 8th or August 3rd 2013. I suspect it is the latter since Europe uses Day-Month-Year.

A nice popped when the cork came off, it pours, straight from the fridge, a 3/4 foam to 1/4 liquid mix. I can now see a hazy light golden brew that certainly leaves some nice lacing behind.

A big yeasty aroma I get followed by some cloves, some banana, and a nice touch of some hoppy bitterness but, not too much, mind you.

The taste is lovely. I get more banana and clove with some hints of bubblegum in the taste and the hoppy bitterness is in the taste too and I like it! There's some other spice here that reminds me of cinnamon, or is it nutmeg? How aboot both so I'm covered..

Medium and smooth bodied, medium carbonation, smooth as silk this is with pretty much no presence from the hefty abv.

Yep, this one heck of a good Tripel in my book. Pardon me while I sip the rest of the bottle away.

of all the belgian made authentic triples from the motherland there, this may be my favorite. its so decadent yet drinkable, and really bright in feel, just wonderful. blonde and hazy, radiant though and glowing brightly, huge white head rises well above the rim of my glass. the nose on this is awesome, all yeasty, warm temperature belgian esters of sweet raisin, vanilla, and dried grass, its a neat complexion over the blonde barley base. the flavor is similarly propelled by the yeast, sweet for a minute, but drying out beautifully in the finish. dynamic and layered, so creamy in feel, rich, but i keep drinking it faster than i should for a 9% abv beer, it just goes down too easy. love all the carbonation, and the way it lingers with just a hint of candy sugar in the finish. i don't get a ton of grain nuance in this one, but its simplicity lets the yeast just rock out. distinct and delicious, can't say enough about this one, a perfect classic example of the belgian tripel style.

Pours a cloudy, hazy gold, with a surprisingly aggressive head. There is no explosive quality to popping the cap, which makes the foam that much more shocking. The head is annoyingly persistent, because if you're not careful, the head will fill up the rest of the glass before you've poured it all.

A gentle, crisp scent, but nothing terribly notable.

Healthy carbonation, on par with a Mountain Dew. Lingering fizz. Grapefruit, grapes, underlying hops that are more tart than bitter. Fruit and bitter notes balance very well.

Absolutely no booze or alcohol burn. This is 9% ABV? No way! Aggressive in the glass, energetic when it hits the tongue with a smooth and velvety finish. No sticky, mouth-smacking aftertaste.

Very tasty, but be careful pouring it. And try and keep the yeast dregs out of your glass (blegh!)

On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. Nice honey colored liquid with barely any head. Delicate lacing and deceptively sweet for something with an ABV of 9%. Not much on the nose & even less on the back end. Where do they hide the alcohol? Nicely done, but probably good for just the one.

Slightly hazy amber color with a two finger head with average retention.
Delicious aroma with predominant notes of peaches, mint, fresh oranges, lemon, spices and apples.
Likewise, flavor of peaches, orange-lemon citrusy, herbal hops, green apples, dry fruits, candied sugar, coriander, Belgian yeast, a bit of banana, over ripped pineapples and cloves. Dry aftertaste and mildly acid.
Deceivingly light body with an effervescent carbonation. Alcohol of 9% abv is incredibly well hidden, amazing.
This is definitely one of the best Tripels I had. Although faithful to style, it has a character of its own and an elegant and complex taste. Thankfully, not a sugar bomb as other Belgian beers. Highly recommendable.

Pours a fizzy head which almost immediately disappears. Brew is a dark orange/copper color, very dark for a Tripel.

Aroma is boozy, and reeks of vanilla and oak, almost a bourbon-like quality to it. Burnt caramel, Belgian yeast, a bit of diacetyl, and a medicinal quality. Slightly tart.

Taste follows the nose, with a bunch of different tastes competing. Finishes with a huge diacetyl bomb, like drinking a Werther's Original. There's an initial hint of what you expect from a Tripel, but it's quickly washed away.

Mild sting; a little syrupy.

This must have been a bad bottle; I can't imagine it was designed to taste this way. A few tastes into it, and it's surely headed for the drain. Infection? Really, really old (no bottle date)? No idea. I'll try to revisit this someday to see if this was an anomalous experience, but I can't imagine someone drinking this on purpose, especially as a Tripel.

Pours a murky golden brown with a frothy, billowing ivory head that lingers.

Belgian yeast, pear, green apple, and candi sugar form the aroma.

Flavor is fairly musty and earthy in the background, countered by sharp green apple and fresh hay. The tart estery character dominates. Alcohol is fairly noticeable. A slightly toasted malt backbone adds support.

Body is moderate, with prickly carbonation and substantial alcohol warmth.

Was hoping to like this better. The tart character is overpowering, rendering the beer fairly one-note.

Poured in to a tulip, dark yellow and gold wih a frothy white head that stuck around for the whole beer. Smell of banana bread and sweet alcohol. Very fruity on the nose like a Grand Mariner soaked fruit cake. Taste earthy and bready up front, sticks to the mouth with a light alcohol burning, moving to the sweet fruity and banana notes. Smooth, delicious. Very well done.

33cl bottle into a goblet. Slightly hazy golden yellow with a three finger white foam head that slowly came down to half a finger. Lively carbonation and good lacing. Sweet smell of malts and fruits with some yeast and citrus. Crisp malty first taste with some sweetness that's followed by a dryish lemony aftertaste with some hops, pepper and apricots. Became more sweet as it warmed up. Some warmness but no apparent taste of alcohol. Medium body and a high carbonation. Very drinkable.

Poured in an Orval Trappist glass: the color was an attractive apricot
with 1/2 finger head.

At first light apricot-lemon and spice aroma. As the beer warmed up,
more complex aromas- some clove, more phenols, and a mix of aromas.

Mouth feel: very carbonated as expected for the style.
Good transition to the taste.

Taste: apricot, lemon, clove, spicy. As the beer warms up, more subtle fruit.

Finish: excellent. Spicy and carbonated.

Overall: an excellent Belgian Tripel. The aroma/taste is less clove and more apricot-lemon-spice.

There are a lot of subtleties in the taste.

I great enjoyed the finish- spicy and carbonated.

A solid traditional Tripel. Pours a hazy golden color from a 330cl bottle into my Chimay goblet. Big bubbly head with better than average retention and filmy lacing down the glass. A good looking beer.

Very nice aroma: apples and pears, Belgian yeast, and some spiciness (mostly black pepper)

Taste is more of the same with some Orange zest thrown in. Very good taste.

Mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Like most good Tripels, no hint of alcohol. The spiciness is most welcome on the tongue.

This is an outstanding example of a Tripel, hits all the bases.

Pours a hazy butterscotch yellow that glows nicely with light behind it with a huge white head that rockily settles from 3+ fingers to 1-2. Excellent retention; very thorough and even lacing. Beautiful.

White wine, yeasty esters, butterscotch, flowers. Very much a tripel.

Floral and candi sugar tastes up front with more earthy and yeasty flavors coming in at the finish. Rose water, lemon rind, white pepper, apple skin with hop aromatics at the end to dry it all out.

Very refreshing and less boozy than one would think (although there is a touch of alcohol in the finish). Medium bodied, crisp carbonation, velvety head. Quite pleasing in all aspects.

Very good tripel.
This is a quite enjoyable drink that hides its alcohol better than tripels sometimes do and is very refreshing.
Beautiful to look at, it has a classic Belgian nose and tastes very fresh and slightly tart with a quick finish. The palate is exquisite and it is all-in-all a fine beer.
Would have again; worth trying if you come across it.

A: medium gold body, slightly hazy, fully effervescent; watch the pour because you're gonna kick up a quick white head half-the glass high in no time at all. Tons of finely bubbled lace was left behind.

S: the Belgian yeasts contribute lots of floral and fruity aromas, supported by a fresh pale malt bill to soften and sweeten the scents

T: pale fruity flavors complement the nose, as do the crisp, tart and citrusy flavors that abound; slight spice character not uncommon to the style - somehow a tripel seems suited to the fall and winter holidays and season, in part due to the herbal and spiced aspects

M: tart and fuzzy, balancing between smooth and crisp, medium-to-light body

O: the Belgian tripel (un-tweaked versions, that is) should present a handful of characteristics, and this beer hits them all - a soft, clean and fresh flavor, featuring pale and citrusy fruits, like lemons, bananas, and various orchard fruits; tart and tight, fizzy and lush - without being heavy. But of course, no two beers are twin.
This is a very spot-on tripel, and will please any fans of the style. It doesn't do anything special to set itself apart from others in the style, so how much anyone likes it will depend mostly on their particular flavor preferences. Certainly a great tripel to go-to. As traditional Belgian tripels go, this one is in the same neighborhood as Chimay and La Fin Du Monde, for my tastes, just a *touch* behind Westmalle and Karmeliet.

Appearance: An opaque apricot with a filmy white head. While the color is fine for the style (if a bit dark), the clarity and the lack of head are disappointing.

Smell: A surprisingly floral and herbal perfume, not what I'd expect from any beer, really, not even an IPA. Aromas of rosemary and sage are fresh and crisp, and are accompanied by a drop of honey and a dash of coriander.

Taste: The herbal quality appears in the taste as well (at one point, I got a real hash taste), but is balanced by high amounts of sweet fruity esters, with apricots and pears in the starring roles. A complex mixture of spices (coriander, cloves, white pepper, etc.) is surprisingly well-balanced, and lingers well into the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, yet crisp and dry due to high carbonation. A bit of alcohol warming tingles on the back of the tongue.

Overall: Extremely unique, and absolutely worth the try! I generally like a little more malt in my Belgian beers, so this wouldn't become a go-to-brew for me. Still, this is excellent overall, and sure stands out from the rest!

750ml bottle of unknown age. The pour into a Chimay chalice yields a lightly hazy golden-amber appearance with a two-finger head. Very good head retention with the residual "skin" of foam that good Belgian ales show. Fruit-forward aroma has notes of ripened white grapes, apple, and pear. Candi sugar is also detectable and not unexpected, as I've found that Het Anker likes to use it liberally in the Gouden Carolus line.

There's more of that fruitiness and candi sugar to be found in the flavor, but it's not at all too sweet. Residual sugars are noticeable but far from cloying. Sweetness goes hand-in-hand with the ripened fruitness to create a compelling flavor profile. Depth of flavor gets better as it warms, as does the mouthfeel. Once the carbonation settles down, the sting falls off and the resulting texture is smoother.

Gouden Carolus Tripel is one of those beers that becomes more impressive with each successive sip. Stands among the elites in its style.

From a 330 ml bottle and a 750 ml bottle (dated February 14, 2013) into a globe glass and tulip glass, respectively. Tasted twice.

A-The brew is lighter in color than most other tripels with a light-golden-straw color. The small bottle produces about one and one-half finger of dense, white foam and the big bottle produces nearly three fingers of dense foam. Retention is good on the small bottle and really good on the big bottle. Nice chunks of lacing, too.

S-The smell is a bit soapy and floral with a light sweetness. There is a good dose of white pepper and lemon. The alcohol is assertive, but fitting for the style and other flavors. Pleasing, but a bit rustic.

T-The taste is sharper and more focused. I think it is more grassy and peppery than the smell, but there is still a bit of lemon and sweetness with reminds me of lemon curd or meringue. The yeast here is milder than on many Belgian variants of this style. A bit simple, but drinkable and pleasing.

M-The carbonation is more robust and full of crackle than many Belgian brews, but it really works here. Heft is medium. This brew is not a softy.

O-This is a nice tripel. I like the style to be lighter in color, which this beer certainly is, and although I often go for the sweet bubblegum Belgian sugar bombs, this brew managed to please without going that route. That is not to say that it was dry or hugely hopped. Instead, it is just a nicely balanced, slightly aggressive tripel.

11.2 oz(330 ml) brown Het Anker Belgian style bottle with the usual greatness of a Het Anker Gouden Carolus label. Really classy and something always catches my eye. This was poured as always into a Het Anker/Gouden Carolus goblet.

A - straw yellowish golden with small hints of light orange. Head pours a fluffy white that takes a few moments to settle into its lovely clumpy ring of lace. There is some stick, but it just clumps back into its brilliant pillowy head.

S - very fruity aroma with some spice. Banana, soft orange with some citrusy notes. The display of yeast in the aroma is off the charts. Absolutely excellent aroma. Sweet, fruity, and spicy. The notes in this nose leave me mouth watering every single time.

T - a nice shot of banana with lighter notes of orange and very faint green apple. I'm very impressed with the banana character. Spicy Belgian funk from a yeast strain that's both spicy and sweet. A nice bready malt. Coriander, clove, and pepper are notes that's also detectable. Some fruity alcohol esters in the finish.

M - not quite full. More of a bigger medium body with great Tripel style texture. Really a lot going on and the feel for me is spot on for the style. There is some alcohol present but don't let it fool you, it's unbelievably drinkable for its size. Nice warming and coating with this Belgian Tripel.

O - my all time favorite Tripel. Period. I've had a lot of good ones, but nothing puts on an overall display like Het Anker's Gouden Carolus Tripel does each time I enjoy it. It's actually shocking how this brew brings excitement with every experience. It just keeps throwing unprecedented qualities at me each time. This is a Tripel I can have any time of year and know I just bought an enjoyable Belgian ale every time I buy it. This thing is brilliant and hands down one of the best in its style. Highly recommended and something ill always enjoy.

11.2 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a golden orange color with vibrant carbonation. Even with a gentle pour, this forms an aggressive, billowy head about four fingers high. It's off-white in shade with a wonderful consistency and impressive/frustrating retention. The lacing it leaves behind is plentiful, as well. This looks just about perfect in the proper glassware (cough).

S: There's a vibe of both peppers - both black pepper and less-pleasing green bell pepper - and citrus, namely orange. Honey, too. I don't seem to get much of the apple/pear/bread notes typical of Belgian yeast at first, but they pop up once the beer opens up. Nicely complex, even if not every note is perfect.

T: This one is pretty sweet. Honey is the first (and most assertive) flavor I notice, which lasts all the way to the moderately long finish. More typical yeast notes slowly enter past the midpoint, drying out the sweetness (somewhat). The back end also has notes of vanilla and mineral water. Dare I suggest it's even metallic? Other than that foible, it's decent.

M: What seems like a sweet brew at first becomes pretty dry. Only as it warms up does (mild) alcohol become noticeable - still nothing to detract from the experience. To me, it loses its carbonation a bit too soon, though thankfully it doesn't make this one too syrupy. Good drinkability for a tripel...which means it has great drinkability by regular standards.

O: Pretty good tripel. Not an amazing one, because it doesn't hit all my preferred style buttons the right way (I'm not a huge fan of the slight metallic finish, and the booze doesn't quite have that 'just concealed enough' quality of the top-flight tripels).
