Enjoyed on tap at the Pacific Beach Tap Room, SD, CA 12/28/11.

Served a cloudy straw color, 1 finger head with active carbonation. Fluffy lacing left on the glass with each drink. Lots of yeast in the aroma, banana and lemon esters. Not much malt, though I can tell there is a mild pale ale in there somewhere. Caramelized banana, alcohol, then lingering yeast funk with wheat biscuit flavor. A bit of clove spiciness and a bit of nuttiness. This feels a bit watery but creamy. Dry alcohol finish.

Although a solid beer, this came across as a tripel that was lacking in some way. I've had St. Feuillien triple that served up a better banana and citrus ester flavor/aroma. Piraat loves the alcohol burn. St. Bernardus is the uber balanced tripel. This lies somewhere in the middle. I love the mouthfeel, though. I guess I'm a little torn, but ultimately this is a beer that is lacking in some way compared to other awesome Belgians. Good, but not to die for.

Let's get this straight - a CANNED BSPA coming from the makers of Keizer Blauw?! How will this not be awesome? 16.9 oz can into a wine glass.

A: Pours a hazy gold color. The head is a finger high, with a bubbly white shade. Retention...well, it's excellent, and the frothy texture practically sticks to the glass with fury. As such, there is a shit ton of lacing left behind.

S: This really brings a nice fruit note - mainly white grapes and apples, but also a distinct expression of sherry. After a while, some peppery yeast appears, giving it a great spicy touch. While slightly simple, it offers all the notes I like in the style.

T: It's very fruity to start, again bringing the grapey and sherry-like flavors like the nose suggested. Bready flavors build up in the middle before finishing on spicy notes of black pepper, sesame seed (!), and - unfortunately - metal shavings. Luckily, some citrusy qualities help me forget it's mild metallicness some. Ramp up the citrus, cut down on the metal, and this could even beat the mighty Duvel.

M: Creamier and softer than most in the style. While it lacks the bone dry finish I like in Duvel, it makes up for it in its rich feel (and to be fair, it's still quite dry). Oh yeah, no alcohol can be detected at all, so the danger factor is here in full force. Carbonation is a bit softer than Duvel - and truth be told, it might have an even better feel than Duvel does.

O: This is another solid Het Anker offering, only this time it's IN A CAN! None of the Belgian-ness is lost, either. It's a bit too metallic-tasting to be a proper Duvel killer, but it still fulfills everything I want from the style: it's an 8% beer that drinks like it's 5%. Plus, cans.

3.7/5: So what if it's not Duvel? CANS.

A: A medium amber colored beer with good clarity and a persistent head of rocky, white bubbles. Some sticky lacing.

S: A strong aroma of light colored fruits, like peaches, oranges and a touch of banana with a light note of spice. There is a moderate malt sweetness along with a floral, alcohol sweetness.

T: The spice is mode dominate in the flavor but otherwise matching the aroma with a medium-strong black pepper flavor and peach to orange fruit flavors. There is a medium-strong hops bitterness and a light earth hops flavor. With only a quick flavor of a honey-like malt sweetness this beer has a fairly bitter balance. The finish is dry with a peppery and bitter aftertaste.

M: A medium bodied beer with some creaminess and a very strong level of carbonation.

O: A decent Belgian Strong with spice and fruit.

Serving glass: Poured from tap into small glass.

Appearance: Cloudy yellow with thin white head.

Smell: Banana, peach, citrus, clove and some grassiness.

Taste: Similar flavor profile as the aroma, but a little more funky and boozy.

Feel: Decent carbonation, light but syrupy body, semi-dry finish.

Overall: Pretty good Strong Pale, but the mouthfeel is a little too syrupy and the flavor profile is a little too pedestrian.

Poured from a 25.4oz bottle into mug. First glass had a strong head.

A. Golden honey. A transparent apple juice with a strong head and laced well.

S. Smells like belgian. Fruity, malts and hops are there too. Carbonation tickles

T. Starts out American, but sweeter. Leaves hoppy..burps are tastey with the sweet and bitter.

M. Nice carbonation. Refreshing... if I had more than one bottle I would guzzle.

O. I like this one! It ads a distinct belgian taste to the PBR that I would drink everyday. Not watery though. But still refreshing. The lite warmth of the 8% ABV cuddles me into bed and sings me a lullaby. Seriously...will buy again
