A: Deep ruby colour with hints of orange. Poured a head that was 1/4 inch and then fell to nothing.

S: Caramel , hints of oak, a bit fruity but it's far in the background, toastiness present.

T: Caramel, hints of toast bread, nice bitterness that follows through.

M: Well carbonated, cleans up the palate. low to med bodied.

O: A great Wee Heavy by all standards.

A: Perfectly translucent amber color with off white head. Very soapy looking. Not much retention but the color is great.

S: Smell of leather, nuts, light honey and caramel are the dominant elements. Some earthy hops. Toffee and that's it.

T: Right off the bat there is a kind of weird acidity going on in this beer. The malt elements aren't as present as expected. Fresh pear and over riped pineapple come to mind. Ends on a salty note.

M: Thin and watery with stingy carbonation. Doesn't fit.

O: Just avoid this, it's just bad.

Soft drink-style bubbly head fades just as quick as the real thing with nothing left behind. Slightly-hazy amber body.

Smells of metallic minerals, yeast, sugary malt and light roast.

Malt is much too thin for a scotch ale. Cheap apple juice and light earthy hops are about all else found here.

Thin body, low carbonation and a powdery drying finish.

This is a pretty poor effort. RJ is not my favourite brewery but they're capable of much better than this. No off flavours really, just lacking in everything you would want in a scotch ale. Described on the label as a "monster" beer; I suppose if someone was unfamiliar with beer this one might in fact scare them away.

Poured from a 341mL bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Pours a copper/bown color. The yellow greenish(!) head is made of rather large bubbles and disappears quickly without leaving any lacing.

S - Some malt, citrusy aroma, mostly orange. Notes of alcohol as well.

T - Malty flavors, very slightly roasted. Obvious notes of alcohol and subtle hop flavors with a herbal hint.

M - Light to medium body, too thin for me. Besides, slightly overcarbonated to my taste.

O - This beer has a good drinkabily but, in my opinion, the thin body is a major downfall. I cannot really conclude about the style since it's my first Scotch Ale, but I would probably drink it again without being too reluctant.

Bottle picked up on a recent trip to Montreal. Poured in to Founder's tulip.

A - Light to medium amber colour, translucent but almost transparent body. A small amount of cream coloured head formed and immediately receded to a small ring around the glass.

S - Toffee, some oak, smoke, caramel. Noticeable alcohol. A very average nose.

T - Toffee, caramel, brown sugar, some floral notes. A somewhat unpleasant overall taste but not a terrible beer.

M - Light to medium body with moderate carbonation.

Bottle from a Summer trip to Mont Tremblant. Wasn't looking forward to this one but may as well give 'er a go.

A - Pours with a huge three or four finger, fizzy light brown head. The thing fizzes away faster than I thought was possible. Bright. Dark copper colour with strong carbonation. Slight lace and a half finger of retention.

S - Dark malts but not as fruity as I would have expected. Not a typical Scotch Ale. No boozy fruitcake or strong dark fruits. Mostly just the sweet grain, burnt coffee kinda aroma with badly toasted malt.

T - Slight dark fruits, but more poorly toasted malt and a big of sweet grain. Weird spoiled bread note. Something is off or just not that good.

M - Decent carbonation, medium body, and a sweetish finish.

O/D - Meh. Poorly put together. I wouldn't seek it out. Not to style and not overly tasty. Just too many off flavours. Aroma was alright but not overly interesting or flavourful.

pours a clear, but fairly dark red color. lots of head that fades very quickly. smell was decent, bit fruity and malty. taste was almost like a floral/fruit type beer. fruity, watery, and really nothing like a scotch ale. also with little carbonation. overall was an okay beer, but nothing special.

Had this last night with some pasta.

Poured from a 341ml. bottle.

Appearance: 4 fingers worth of light tan foam with an amber-red body. Retention is average as it dissipates within 1-2 minutes.

Smell: Toasted malt, caramel and a metallic twang. Some smoky ash also.

Taste: Caramel malt, some spiciness in the tail end and a hint of smokiness that as it warms turns into like an ashtray-like aspect. Mildly unpleasant though not pervasive.

Mouthfeel: Body feels a little thin but it's decent. Feels like a light scotch ale.

Overall: Seems kind of like an ashy vienna lager. Decent but nothing more.

660 ml brown bottle.

A- Head only lasts a half second. Nice deep red colour with orange and amber higlights. A few streams of fine bubbles rising in the beer that keep a thin ring of bubbles going along the edge of the glass for a few minutes. Nice except for lack of head.

S- Malty caramel. Faint sour fruit. Touch of roasted grain.

T- Dark malt with a hint of fruit. Some roasted flavours. Could be more flavourful though. Slight sourness to finish with some bitterness towards the end. Mild. caramel increases as it warms and a hint of alcohol flavour also appears.

MF- A little thin for the style. But enjoyable nonetheless.

D- Pleasant, but a little ordinary.

Bottle: Poured a clear medium brown color ale with a huge bubbly slightly off-white head with average retention. Carbonation is quite low and body is a bit thin. Aroma of caramel malt is easily identifiable and quite enjoyable. Taste is also dominated by quite sweet caramel malt with a very subtle bitter ending. Again, the fresher the sample the better this is since it seems to be declining quite rapidly once it hit the shelves.

Not bad. Particularly in comparison to what was available from my Clear Out Cellar weekend. Some Scottish taste, much carmel malts, thin wattery, carbonation did not quite make it. An average craft beer. Some mid-sip fruit, but not the fruit I like, melon green grapes.
