341 mL foil-rimmed bottle from a sixer picked up at TBS; no decipherable freshness information. Never seen this stuff locally, which is a sad thing because the witbier selection around here is rather lacking. Served well-chilled, as suggested on the bottle.

This wit pours a familiar foggy, golden-yellow colour, with streams of bubbles rushing to the surface where one finger of dense, creamy head is seated. Nice resiliency; it takes more than a few minutes to thin out into a thin cap and collar. The aroma is fairly typical of the style - sweet wheat malts, banana esters, yeast, some light citrus notes and a hint of clove. Nothing out of sorts so far.

A little on the sweet side for my tastes, but still an enjoyable white beer. Bubble gum, banana and sweet wheat malt are the dominant flavours initially, with lemon citrus zest eventually giving way to some tangy sweetness. The finish is yeasty and mildly spicy, with a touch of clove and bitter citrus peel to counteract the preponderance of saccharine notes. Light-bodied, with fizzy carbonation but an unfortunately watery feel on the palate; the low point of the beer for me. It's quite drinkable and refreshing, but the thinness prevents this wit from being a serious contender in the category.

Final Grade: 3.58, a B grade. Cheval Blanc is a serviceable witbier, but not an outstanding one. I enjoyed the other bottles in this sixer last week, so I can't say with a straight face that this isn't a highly sessionable, thirst-quenching brew, because it really is. It's just not as good as my old favourites (Hoegaarden, Blanche de Chambly, etc.). Worth a try this summer if you've got an itch for wits and you happen to spot it on the shelves, but not something to go out of your way for.

A -Pours a pale straw colour, finger of head with some retention and no real lacing.

S - Sweet yeast esthers, hints of clove and candied apple, with a musty wheat finish.

T - Solid bubble gum and clove flavors, the musty wheat comes through on the finish with a peppery spice and citrus rind.

M - Lighter bodied ale, a tad prickly and finished with a touch of dryness.

O - A tasty ale with decent flavors and easily patio sessoionable. A treat to find on the east coast.
