Opening the bottle, one is greeted with a gasp of carbonation exhalation and a weakly bitter scent. Pouring produces a tall, fluffy, pure white head that quickly fades to a thing ring around the glass with a few large islands of foam. Fair amounts of lacing that slowly disintegrate into the pool of transparent, pale, golden lager-colored body.
The scent is citrusy with distinct lemon notes, a bit of musty socks, and malt sweetness. The flavors are rather faint all around: sketches of malt and hops; lager-like and slightly vinous. The finish consists mostly of sweet malt residues and a tinge of caramel flavor with some floral hops.
Medium-light body with a mild carbonation level endures this one in the mouth and is followed by a moderately dry finish. Gaffel's kölsch is a well-made brew that considers its ingredients with respect and does not overindulge in any of them. The low alcohol level and mild flavors make this a good session brew or a non-heavy, refreshing spring/summer beer.

Bottle drank at Good Luck in Rochester, NY.
Pours a light orange/yellow, with a thin oily head, and a little bit of lacing.
Smells like grass/hay, green apple, and some unfortunately skunky aromas. I don't know how old this bottle is, but it probably isn't the freshest, unfortunately.
The hop flavor is unfortunately a bit muted, some tea and leaf-like hop flavors, some slight grassiness, and a honey-like malt flavor that seems indicative of age. It still does taste good, but I wish this was fresher, or on tap. Still quite crips with a nice bit, but it could be so much more.
Light bodied, very crisp and smooth mouthfeel, keeps it drinkable. Medium amount of carbonation.
Not a bad Kolsch, but probably not the best representation of how the brewer intended it to be.

05/13/13 On tap. Nice and crisp. A touch on the bitter side, but it works well. I'm a stickler for having Kölschs served icy cold and in smaller glasses to maintain their crispness. Otherwise I find myself in a race against the Elements and we all know how that will turn out. Looking for this to be a summer favorite.
