Second stop while in Portland last week, few blocks away from Broadway brewery, if I was not looking into every building we passed I would not have come across this one, hidden sign and the second floor of a building shared by other businesses, place was pretty blah inside and did not have much of an atomosphere, seemed like an old pub in a nicer area, probably a cool place to relax later on in the day though, did not seem to match, long bar area, old wooden furniture and copper make up the layout, eight of their beers were on tap as well as some wines, some were good and others not so much, Terminator Stout was probably the standout, they also had Budweiser and Dubbel Trubel from Cascade, saw some people snacking on some cheese that looked good, people working there were nice and gave us the whole history on the McMenamins chain and how it was started by two brothers and grew rapdily ever since, would not go back to this location but would definitely be interested in seeing what other McMenamins like Bagdad Theater and Kennedy School had to offer on my next visit to Portland

This place is a little hard to find, as there is no street signage, go in the building at 15th and Broadway (there is a Starbucks on the street level, so look for that) then go up the stairs.

This seems to be more of a dining establishment than a bar. There are long tables in the center and booths against the windows and walls. There is also a billiard room with 2 tables and more seating off the main room.

The copper topped bar occupies about 30' of space and it seats about 16. Unfortunately the large pillars on the bar break-up any sense of community. It's really hard to strike-up a conversation separated by these pillars.

On to beer, they had 8 regulars, 2 specials and 4 guest taps. The guest taps were PBS, Coors Light, Bud & Ringtail pale ale.

The menu has some good choices with an emphasis on burgers. I noticed a lot of the selections include local ingredients like Tillamook cheeses.

The service is professional and quick. Not chatty but no complaints.

The music is a mix of classic R&B, blues and rock.

It has a very mellow crowd mostly couples and groups of women (not complaining). This is not a good place to catch a game.

One minor drawback, the bathrooms are in the commercial part of the building and you have to enter a code to enter. Don't drink too much and forget the code....

Despite a location near both the popular Lloyd Center mall and the historic Irvington neighborhood, this isn't one of the better-known McMenamins in 'The Empire'. Though we live less than 10 minutes away and frequently drive past, it's been completely off my 'Portland Beer Radar' for a while. Tonight we went to honor a friend's latest creations (he brews for a 'sister' McM location). Though this was my first visit in about three years, I've visited at least a half dozen times before.

The pub quietly presides on a second-floor perch, overlooking the busy intersection of NE 15th & Broadway. I say 'quietly' because there's almost no signage to lead one inside the glass and block building. It's one of very few McMenamins I can think of without a street presence and probably the only one without outdoor seating. Enter at the street corner, ascend an open switchback staircase and enter the long, welcoming pub. Wooden booths line the Broadway-facing windows and communal tables run the length of the Oriental-carpeted room, fronting a lengthy wooden bar. Because of the many windows and the spacious corner atrium, this must be one of the 'greener' McM pubs - there are plants everywhere!

The beer here is mostly the standard McMenamins fare, the likes of: Terminator, Hammerhead, Ruby, etc. The fall seasonal was the Scarecrow ESB. All are fine, if unremarkable, easy-drinkers. We came on this night for the three newest seasonals (which weren't on the menu and were so new our server seemed befuddled by us ordering them). The choices: a tasty and spiced malt-bomb of an Oktoberfest; a zesty Witbier (brewed with Vienna malt for a vibrant orange appearance) and a solid fresh-hopped IPA (brewed with 10 lbs. of hops from the brewer's own backyard vines). All were quite good and allowed me to shrug off the weak 'guest taps', which included PBR, Bud and Coors Light. Overall, a 3.5 for selection and 4.0 for quality, but those numbers drop precipitously without the three aforementioned brews.

Service was decent, friendly enough but unimpressive on the 'beer-savvy' scale. Food was, and always is, typical pub fare: my mainstay Captain Neon burger and tots was good as usual, my wife was duly impressed with her fish & chips. Satisfying grub, good for beer drinking.

Not a great 'destination' pub, but the McMenamins on Broadway definitely has a comfortable 'homey' vibe. Witnessed: friends hanging out, regulars at the bar, parents sipping pints with a pre-teen girl doing homework on a laptop...and our dozen-strong group of Tuesday night pub-goers. A couple pool tables in back, Wi-Fi throughout.

Worth a visit; we'll try to get back sometime soon. At least before 2011.
