Up there with the popular Belgian stong ales such as duvel and la trappe, another great brew from mountain goat.

Tastes of apple, malt, clove, spices and oak - a well balanced Belgian strong ale, which is a bit sweeter than some of the more traditional Belgian strong ales out there.

Even better is the oak aged Rapunzel on tap at the brewery which is stunning!

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden honey color with a good head that fades to nice lacing.

S: Aroma of fruit, some vanila and bit of spice.

T: Taste of fruit, bit of vanila and spice. Nice bitterness and a dry finish.

F: Medium body, smooth and a bit creamy. the 8.3% ABV is well hidden. Nicely balanced.

O: Very enjoyable beer. Nice take on the style. Worth chcking out.

Pours a hazed golden hue with a creamy two finger head and lacing everywhere, the smell is booze, bready Belgian yeast, honey and sweet malts, when I explain the mouthfeel I think the label on bottle couldn't of described it better"the palette is full but dry with subtle malty sweetness" and has tastes of bready Belgian yeast, lemon butter, honey and finished with a malty dry sweetness and overall yeah it's nice and sessionable and quite nice for style but nothing over the top cheers.

Mountain Goat are quite a decent brewer from the previous beers I've tried, being the Hightail & Steam ales, and I've wanted to give the rare breeds a go but never got round to them till now. Alright beware my score may be a little weighted in its favour as I am a big fan of Belgian styled ales.

Poured from a 640ml bottle into a St Feuillien chalice.

A: This ale presents itself well with a hazy golden orange body and a light white lacing, certainly looks like a Belgian pale ale.

S: Candi sugar, orange peel, sour yeast are the dominant aromas with background notes of coriander and botrytis-grape along for the ride. Pretty standard Belgian pale ale fare and nothing that screams out that this is an Aussie beer, however that's exactly one of the reasons Mountain Goat is such a treasured brewer - because they don't mess with a tried and true formula.

T: All of the above aromas (Candi sugar, orange peel, sour yeast, coriander and botrytis-grape) come out in the taste as expected, although that Candi sugar is a tad heavy-handed. It's tasty like a Belgian pale ale however it's missing the flavour balance/complexity you would get from a Duvel or even La Chouffe, in fact I would go as so far to say that you may as well be drinking a La Trappe Blond instead.

M: Medium bodied with a tight packed full on fizz in the carbonation... a bit too much carbonation I'm afraid.

D: Good but not the spark of genius that was expected from Mountain Goat. I would stick with the brilliant Duvel, the rustic La Chouffe or even the borderline average La Trappe Blond (which is cheaper) if you want something similar to this. It wasn't really a rare breed, to me a rare breed is something hard to find, something one would search for in sunken galleons or ancient caves, this on the other hand is a bit mundane.

Food match: The sugar content in this puts it smack in to dessert territory; cakes, tortes, slices and macaroons - that sort of thing. If you were to go savoury make sure that it's a sweet dish also.

Drank from my Duvel tulip

A - Pours a pale cloudy straw colour with a one fingered head that reduces to a film and laces a little

S - Not much other than some sweet candied sugars

T - Uo front some spice and hop folloewd by a sweetish flavours that just hangs around. The finish is a little sticky. Too much residual sweetness here.

M - Light body and carbonation is medium to full

O - Reminds me of the Squires Abbey Ale, Lacks a bit of authenticity. Would rather spend my money on the genuine article. Don't worry too much is you miss this one. Having said that I would love to see these beers attempted far more in Australia. I;m guessing this will age well and loose its sweetness. So I will review again in two years

From Vintage Cellars BB 07/13

Gold hazy one finger white head. Fades to film good lace.

Yeast apples and lemon on nose

Taste is a Belgian yeast bomb, add lemons but somewhat unbalanced, tho quite sweet overall.

Light and zingy in mouth, to style

Not really in the Duvel league, but a good effort nonetheless. Lacks the champagne character that separates good from great.

Pours amber with a large head.
Nose shows spicy phenols, big clove hits, sweet malt, candi sugar and dried fruit.
Pretty sweet flavours too, lots of malt although it dries out a bit in the finish. Some booze is noticeable with a soft industrial character.
Needs more carbonation to battle the sweetness and further dry out the finish.

2012 bottling. Been digging the last few Mountain Goat limited edition beers, so was pretty eager to try this.

LOUD pop on opening. Pours a slightly hazy golden color, a lot of rising bubbles, poured into
a La Fin Du Monde tulip presents a pretty picture, although the head doesn't stick around all that long. Alcohol dominates the nose, fruit (pear and maybe a bit of apricot), spice.

Disappointingly light malt body, a slight bready note, chalky belgian yeast, pear, apricot, certain vinuous notes apparent. Lacking the hoppy snap of Duvel & some of it's better imitators, although has a rather long bitter/phenolic finish. Maybe a bit over-carbed.

Not a terrific example of the style, but not bad.

Wow...I have a new favourite beer...and her name is Rapunzel!

I have been waiting a very long time to try this highly regarded a very limited small-batch from the Mountain Goat team...and it did not disappoint!

A - The high carbination tap caused the beer to pour with a froth explosion into the tulip glass, which gave a delightful big head, as such a Belgian ale should. Rich hazy golden-red colour, slowly reducing head leaving plenty of lacing.

S - Soft but tasty smell of fruit, malt, toffee and a little spice.

T - A fruity hit of deliciousness. Wow, I loved it! The alcohol was very nicely hidden, with the delicious fruity taste winning the flavour battle (possibly by the alc/vol has been reduced from 8.3% in 2009 to now 7.7% for 2010.)

M - Medium body, high carbination, which suited this beer perfectly. Beautiful balance throughout the whole mouth. I enjoyed allowing it to linger in my mouth. Long finish.

D - What delighted me most about this beer was how perfectly consistant this beer remained throughout drinking down to glasses of it, in all aspects of taste, aroma, moutful and drinkability. Very easy drinking. Not a sessional beer because of the 7.7% alc/vol...but I was definitely ready for more after each glass.

I don't know how this beer could be improved anymore...BUT...I'm looking forward to heading back to the Goat Bar's "Get Back with Rapunzel" event in a few weeks time to try the extra special "Oaked version" (which has spent 9 months in a French oak chardonnay barrel), as well as a Randied version. Sensational stuff.

A - Poured into a tulip glass a cloudy copper colour with 2 centimetres of off white head that falls away quite quickly.
S - Quite a dominant clove aroma with some slight fruity esters and a toffee maltiness.
T - Lots of clove also in the taste along as well as a toffee malt character and some fruity touches.
M - Medium bodied, fairly high carbonation. Dry finish.
D - Mountain Goats first Belgian style beer I believe. Not a bad effort. Something I'd drink again.
