Pint at the brewpub in Richmond 28/3/14 from notes

A clear amber liquid, just a thin beige film for a head but even after it falls it still manages to leave a couple partial rings, my second pint had much better retention and left more lace so perhaps my first glass was dirty

S grapefruit and brown sugar, pine, has some balance working for it, the rye malt holds its own against the hops, good mix of tropical citrus and caramel

T spicy rye comes put much more in the mouth, lemon rind and the brown sugars burnt, tastes a little bigger then the smell, the rye malt plays a big part but still a crap load of hops

M medium bodied, stops just short of foamy, mild bitter kick, spicy finish

O I love a good RyePA and the malt takes center stage without stealing the show, worked for me from start to finish and I took down a couple pints in no time

I normally like a lopsided hop heavy IPA but this one hit the spot, fresh and spicy, I'm surprised it doesn't get a little more love on this site

Drank from my Mane tulip. Not sure how old the bottle is.

A - Pours a slight cloudy copper colour. White head, dies quick.

S - Plenty of malt, and yes you can really smell the rye. Grapefruit and Pine also present

T - Plenty of mandarin, grapefruit, pine. The Rye is somewhat subdued. The finish is malt before the bitterness.

M - Medium carbonation and mouth feel

O - Very drinkable and hard to fault, despite the lack of wow factor.

Great beer, enjoyed it immensely, hope to get my hands on more of these

aroma: sweet-malty-citrus with some floral notes

taste: sweet-malty-citrus with spice and orange peel with some slight brown sugar and toffee

very tasty and enjoyable beer that seemed to improve as it warmed up. A brewery still going strong and in the top percentile for Australian breweries.

Previously tried at least 18 months ago but never reviewed. 640ml bottle.

Mildly hazed amber with a strongly resistant cream head. Eventually abates to a 1cm raised curtain.

Pleasantly malty, with a slight spicy rye sharpness. Moderate pungent oniony hops, backed up by tropical notes of guava and apricot.

More rye in the taste, mingling with plenty of candied tangerine, mango and lemon sorbet. Demure but intriguing.

Light entry with a silky heft from the rye. Smooth and smashable.

Good sterf. Hugely drinkable with enough hop character and some spunk from the rye. MG really nail beers of this ilk.

Pours a shiny reddish colour, thins out at the edge, with impressive, slightly thinning off-white head. Lace is very decent, sticking around like that kid who eats worms. Looks like a very nice beer indeed.

Smells quite malty, but with a very noticeable resinous hop character as well. Floats above with a hint of pine, rubber, granny smith apple and noticeable lemon. Could use a bit more earthiness from the rye, but it's a pleasant aroma, fresh and intriguing.

Taste is a little bit off, to be honest. Leans fairly heavily on the earthy rye which tastes quite rubbery. Again, a touch of some decent toasty malt upfront that doesn't quite fill its potential. Hops are over early, fruity and citric largely, with lemon and a twist of grapefruit, that gets bitter later. That organic rubber flavour re-emerges late, ending on an odd note that isn't nearly as fresh as it could have been. Not bad, but needs something more on the end.

Bit fizzy on the feel, carbonated from start to finish, contributes to my growing theory that there's not quite enough malt on this.

Not bad, but it's the kind of beer I like, and it doesn't really deliver on all fronts, so I'm left a tad disappointed.

640 ML poured into a tulip

A-- Poured a hazy, darker golden amber color. Some nice orange hues to this. One finger of light tan colored head. On swirling get two fingers of head and very nice retention to this. When finally receding get a thick ring of lacing. Decent looking enough.

S-- Peach, orange, stonefruit, and just bits of a carmel backbone. Once warmed up more pine and grapefruit appear. More fruity than anything else really.

T-- Once again more about peach, orange, and soft grapefruit. Backbone is more evident in each sip. More of a APA than an IPA but taste is pretty good.

M-- Lighter medium bodied, medium carbonation. Dry finish. Rye makes appearances in the feel. Gives off slight grainy, spicy and earthy tones in the mid palate. Does pick up more rye notes as warms. Workable.

O-- More of a rye APA to me but not bad at all. Needed more rye notes I thought but still a decent enough effort. Maybe a tad bit too light for me as an IPA.

640ml from Warners at the Bay, poured into a Tripel Karmeliet tulip.

Has an amber-orange look about it. Nice creamy, beige head of foam on top that measures a couple of fingers, looks creamy and laces well.

Takes a while for the smell to come through. Initially a little rye-bread and that's it. Later some pungent pine needles comes out, but not massively.

Taste also takes a while to open up. Initially rye and pine and not much of either. Later it becomes a nice dank pine flavour that emerges.

Decent bitterness once it opens up, solid to big body and consistent bitterness helps keep this pretty drinkable.

Needs the large format bottle to make this work. Small format (tiny penis as some refer to them) bottle would really work as it takes a while to open up. I've gone from being disappointed with this to being pleased, so average seems to fit about right with it.

Pours dark amber with a large, lasting head.
Nose is pretyt fruity, with lots of peach, passion fruit and apricot. Underneath is spicy hints along with big caramel presence and toffee.
Similar fruity flavours, but also showing a lot of malt, combining to create orange marmalade characters. Nice spicy, bready backing from the rye.
Could use more carbonation.
Lovely stuff!

First of Style

Pours a deep copper - one finger very coarse head which just fades. Gone.

Aromas of citrus and pine. Something else I can't put finger on

Taste is a weaker version of the nose. Doesn't scream out the hops. Citrus well hidden, and much smoother. Moderate hop bitterness on back palate.

Mouthfeel - well carbonated.

Overall, this leaves me wondering what is the diff between an IPA and a rye IPA - I really can't tell from this - unless it's overall just a less hoppy taste..

Good but not up to previous Rare Breeds in any way. As such 0.5 off for value.

On tap at the brewery. From notes.

A - Poured dark copper with good carbonation. Two finger white head. Hazy. Great thick drapes of lace with a full finger of retention.

S - Citrus, rich maltiness, fruity notes, and a blend of citrussy hops.

T - Lot's of malt but not overpoweringly so. You can tell the richness of the rye is adding to a more balanced version of an IPA. Fruity malt notes blending with lot's of citrus from the hops, with flavours like grapefruit, pineapple, and mango, with some passionfruit coming out.

M - Good carbonation with a medium body and a nice bitterness.

O/D - Really cool. Rye adds a nice richness and the hops are in the right place. A pretty solid IPA.

On tap at Local Taphouse St Kilda, Feb 2012

Pours a Pale/Tinted Amber colour with a good head that slowly disappears.

Unmistakable wiff of Cascade hits my nose immediately. Slight roasted nut aroma present - possibly chestnutty. Malt hides a little but is definitely there.

With a big Cascade wiff comes a big cascade taste. This time good 'ole Citra is popping up and saying hi. I love this combo of hops and once again, it pleaseth me. Bitterness is well balanced and lasts through but not after the swallow like some IPAs are prone to causing.

Full body with expected rye 'slickness' but not enough to lube up ones vocal chords a great deal.

Overall, a nice Rye IPA. I am generally not a fan of Rye but the boys from the Goat have pulled off a nice beer. Well done!
