At times, I frequent the 66 bus from Coolidge Corner, to Harvard Square, and have noticed this beer bar and longed to go in for some time now.
I got the chance last Saturday, and I have to say that I was impressed.
It is a small place, and it was crowded, but for some reason myself and my companion saddled right up to the bar, and felt right at home.
The atmosphere is great. A Long dark wood bar borders the right side, and lovely molded fixtures adorn the mirrors and shelves behind the bar. Low atmospheric lighting. Bare brick walls, with some well placed local artwork. Punk Rock and New Wave music pumped through the speakers was just icing on the cake. I remember hearing the Buzzcocks. Very very cool, and I dig it.
Service, was quick, prompt,, and with a smile. Bartenders were always attentive, even amongst the din and chaos of a Saturday night.
Selection was very good, with very nice choices amongst a world of varying styles. I settled on the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen, which was poored cool, not cold, from the tap, and in a Aecht Schlenkerla weizen glass. I was impressed.
My companion is not the greatest fan of beer, so she settled on a martini from a very creative menu of concoctions.
I did not sample the cuisine, but the menu looked good.
It is not the cheapest bar or restaurant in the neighborhood, but it is quality. And that should be noted.
I will definitely return, and I definitely look forward to it.
