It’s not The Green Tom Beer
This is my favourite beer

600ml bottle into snifter. packaged april 17, 2014. consumed on may 21, 2014

a: pitch black with one and a half fingers of slightly off-white head. impressive

s: very smoky up front, almost like smelling salty smoked meat. no thanks. hints of coffee, chocolate and dark fruits

t: salty and smoky up front, which lingers for quite a while. slight chocolate and dark fruit notes emerge mid-to-late palate. the chocolate flavour becomes stronger as it warms up. finishes salty and dry with coffee, slight roasted malt and smoky flavours

m: medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation

o: oddly salty all throughout the tasting? even if these off-flavours were taken out, i don't think the beer would be that great to begin with. glad i tried this but i most likely won't have this ever again

Bottle from the LCBO for $5 or so

Appearance - Dark brown colour with a small size frothy of white head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is no lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and faint coffee. There is also a graininess and a touch of smoke.

Overall - More of just a regular stout than a milk stout feel wise. It has an okay taste but is pretty boring and unremarkable.

A - Typical stout appearance. Nice and dark with a short foamy head.

S - Roasted barely, nuts, and coffee bean.

T - Nice combination of coffee bean with a touch of vanilla sweetness. The flavours are not too strong nor overly complex but still well balanced with a semi-dry finish.

M - Creamy and milk-like mouth feel. Not very heavy compared to other Stouts which makes this beer drinkable but takes away from some of its richness.

O - My first Milk Stout so wasn't sure what to expect but I did enjoy it. This brew could use a thicker body but I enjoyed the combination of flavours that did not go overboard with the sweetness.

I never cared much for Tom Green's humour; like most people I found him a little too bizarre and immature. The beer that bares his name, however, definitely looks like the kind of thing that's up my alley: opaque except directly into the light, this Milk Stout is the colour of ruddy cocoa powder and has a head that inflates off the pour like a hot air balloon.

The aroma is part roast, chocolate, french vanilla, and coffee and cream. People at the brewery take note: an added pinch of cinnamon and/or nutmeg would make for a great spiced Christmas offering. This is also the kind of smoky, malty profile that could stand up to a few hot peppers to create a mole- or Mexican hot chocolate-like beer (see: Channel Ocho).

Each sip mixes in the mouth marshmallow, nuts, coffee, and milk chocolate. Its mocha and rocky-road flavour profile is not hard to enjoy, especially if you're in the mood for dessert. That being said, while the lactic tang may help emulate ice cream, there's nowhere the degree of sweetness (a good thing) or malty depth to compete with the likes of Häagen-Dazs (a bad thing).

The caramel and milk chocolatey notes come up against an astringent smoky element in the mouthfeel; it's like the tongue's been used to clean the barbecue grills. Semblances to french vanilla ice cream notwithstanding, the aftertaste is ashy. And despite a latte-like sweetness this 'charred' quality leaves a taste a little too close to stale coffee breath for my liking.

Mediocre Canadian breweries teaming up with washed-up Canadian performers has turned out a couple good stouts, though this one doesn't come close to comparing with Flying Monkeys' Barenaked Ladies collaboration. Also, let's be honest, this isn't anything Beau's couldn't have come up with on their own (what exactly did Tom Green do?). It's on exactly the same 'good - not great' level as most of their other offerings and likewise doesn't warrant any special attention.

I think this is the second milk stout I've ever had. The first was insanely sweet and turned me off on the style. Anyways, saw this, figured I'd give it a try. Pours an ink black with a brown, coffee like head that quickly dissipates. Smells of roasted barley, oats, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and cream. Not quite a coffee creamer; something like an Irish cream. Tastes sweet with that Irish cream, dark chocolate and vanilla. Finishes bittersweet with dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Mouthfeel is a little overcarbonated. I'd like it a bit creamier. Overall, I like this beer. Worth checking out, maybe even getting a twelve pack of, but not a case; unless that case is cheap.

Truth be told, I've avoided this beer for a very long time for the very same reason I avoid anything to do with Tom Green (not that that has been hard of late). I can't stand Tom Green. Who can?

This looks very much like you would expect a stout to look. Deep dark chocolate black. A frothy tan head. A thin layer of foam retains to the bitter end.

The aroma is textbook stout: Roasty. Chocolatey. Some faint cherry/raisin in the background. Slightly chalky, with a hint of tobacco and coffee grinds.

And wouldn't you know it, it tastes like a stout. It's actually pretty good. Lots of nice dry roast and dark baker's chocolate backed up by a milk chocolate sweetness with some nuttiness and a bit of a minerally finish, with some of that cherry (or is it raspberry?) fruitiness that I noticed in the aroma.

It's strongly carbonated which cuts the chocolate sweetness but I wouldn't mind if that was dailed down a bit.

Overall more of a stout than a milk stout as it lacks the right amount of sweetness to offset the roasty character for me, but semantics aside it's quite an enjoyable beer. I wouldn't call it complex but really this beer was worth it just for the one line in the description on Beau's website:

"hints of nut(s)"

Ha! I see what you did there.

Anyway, I wonder what hack comedian who has faded into oblivion they will pull out for their next beer?

Purchased at the LCBO 600ml bottle for $4.85. Served in a tulip at 8deg C.

A- Opened well with a nice 2" brown head. Very dark as expected

S- Roasted malt, molasses

T- Ok. Not very creamy at all. Falls short on most aspects a good milk stout

M- Ok. no creaminess at all. Very uninspired.

O- Not that good. Gave it a bit of a better rating than I think I should have. Will not buy again

Food Pairing

This not very inspired milk stout went with... pizza. Hey pizza can go with almost any beer depending on toppings.

Enjoy

600 ml bottle from LCBO for $4.85 CDN. Served well-chilled into glassware. Batch 3431 dated Dec 27, 2013.

Appearance - Opaque dark cola brown color with a nice 2 finger tan head, that unfortunately doesn't stick around long. A few bubbles are visible and there's some red hues in the beer, but it really is too dark to see much of anything.

Smell - Some coffee chocolate blend but also a good dose of roasted grains in there, more so than expect from a milk stout. Also a specific mineral characteristic in the aroma too especially while reasonably cold.

Taste - Roasted characteristics of some coffee but I'm not getting this as a milk stout as the chocolate sweetness and the richness that I've come to associate with milk stouts just isn't there. There is a thinness perhaps from the aforementioned mineral characteristics in the aroma that leak through into the taste. Does get better as it warms some, more coffee flavor and less mineral tastes.

Mouthfeel - Thin and watery without the desired sweetness and slickness of a milk stout. Medium-high carbonation, but very thin bodied.

Overall - I don't know if this was not a good bottle or what but it was pretty bland and just paled in comparison with the other milk stouts I've had. Definitely a lighter version of the style, I wouldn't repeat this again.

I have been trying out a few of Beau's beers lately and this one was definitely very enjoyable. A nice, smooth, easy to drink stout.

Appearance- Typical black stout look with a foggy light brown head.

Smell- Coffee and dark chocolate aroma

Taste- Very creamy at first with a smooth milk taste. Quickly reveals a strong coffee taste with the slight sweetness of dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel- Rather smooth and creamy. Mild carbonation that compliments the flavour and it made the beer smooth and very drinkable.

Overall- I don's have much experience drinking stouts but this one was very enjoyable. The creamy, milk taste made the beer smooth and very easy to drink. The perfect stout for someone who does not enjoy some of the heavier stouts out there. I would drink again and i hope this is not just a limited production. with Tom Green's name attached I am sure many Canadians will be willing to give this a try

Bottle: Poured a black color ale with a large foamy head with medium retention and light lacing. Aroma of light lactose and dry roasted malt is pleasant enough. Taste is also a good mix between some lactose notes with some light dry roasted malt with subtle black chocolate notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Nothing to write home about but still better than your average offering from Beau’s.

From the 650 ml bottle to a pint glass.

This beer pours a deep brown almost black with a fair two finger head that breaks quickly leaving little behind. The nose is mild with roast some chocolate and a bit of coffee. Taste is a bit of a lot down, I expected the typical milk/sweet stout taste and it didn't deliver. I got roasts and coffee with some cocoa in the taste, but it lacked punch. Mouth feel was thin and the carbonation was fine.

I love milk/sweet stouts and Beau's told me that this is what I should expect... But I don't feel that this is what this beer is. It is okay, nothing more.
