Notes/Commercial Description:
Golden-hued, crisp and finely balanced, Lug Tread is our tribute to the classic beer of Cologne, Germany. Lug Tread is top fermented (like an ale) and then cold aged (like a lager) for a lengthy period. This gives our beer some light ale notes complemented by a lager-like crispness. Lug Tread displays interwoven malt and hop flavours, subtle fruit flavours and a crisp, lingering finish.

Appearance: It has a nice pale golden/yellow colour to it. It has a nice white head that dies down quite fast and has some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of biscuty malts, grassy hops and a woodsy smell.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a biscuty/bready malt taste to it upfront with a nice grassy hop bitterness, some spices and a bit of apple.

Mouthfeel: It has a high carbonation with a very nice overall balance of flavours.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavours and aromas. Props to Beau's.

In his selfless quest for the perfect beer, Bucky picked up a 600 ml bottle of Beau’s “Lug Tread Lagered Ale”. Lug Tread was 5.2% alcohol by volume with a bottling date of February 12, 2014 printed on the rear label.

Lug Tread poured an absolutely clear light yellow/gold color with a storm of visible carbonation bubbles. The 1.5” of bubbly white head lasted for about 3 minutes before fading to a collar and thin film of foam, leaving some modest lacing in its wake. Its aroma was of lightly roasted malts, earth and grass. The beer’s taste began with sweet, light malts which gave way to an earthy and slightly grassy flavour, finishing with a mild hop bitterness which lingered as an aftertaste. Despite the abundance of visible carbonation bubbles, both the carbonation and overall mouth feel of the beer were quite soft, and I would describe the beer as light to medium bodied. A well balanced beer and perfectly respectable, but there’s nothing special enough here to elevate Lug Tread above the growing micro-brewery crowd.

One warning if you are planning to buy a single bottle from the LCBO to sample…they have a nasty habit of accidently charging for the full 4 pack, so check your bill before leaving the store. The 4x600 ml pack sells for $15.85.

600 ml bottle from the 4 pack of Beau's lug tread purchased from LCBO for just under $16 CDN. Served cold into a pint glass.

Appearance -Clear pale golden beer. Nice 2+ fingers of head that lingers for a bit but subsides shortly thereafter. Streaky but sparse lacing left behind in the glass.

Smell - Grassy and grainy with a slight malt and fruit aroma undercurrent.

Taste - Mild but very crisp and clean with a slight floral taste, focused on grass. Mild bitterness. Lingering flavors make my tongue sing. There also a lasting grape flavor that I seem to find with most kolschs, that is present but subtle here.

Mouthfeel - Great smoothness with medium-high carbonation here that is just... right.

Overall - A very fine Kolsch, probably y favorite and something that is extremely sessionable.

Appearance - pours a golden yellow with one finger width of foamy off-white head.

Smell - bready and sweet malts, hint of citrus, apple, hops (somewhat noble), and a touch sulphury.

Taste - bready malts, apple, sulphury yeast, touch of hops bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Dry finish, medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall - For my first Beau's offering, this Kolsch has all the elements for the style. Quite sessionable.
