Notes/Commercial Description:
Golden-hued, crisp and finely balanced, Lug Tread is our tribute to the classic beer of Cologne, Germany. Lug Tread is top fermented (like an ale) and then cold aged (like a lager) for a lengthy period. This gives our beer some light ale notes complemented by a lager-like crispness. Lug Tread displays interwoven malt and hop flavours, subtle fruit flavours and a crisp, lingering finish.

600ml bottle at Zak’s Restaurant. Pours a light straw color. Thin white head. Definitely filtered. Lively carbonation. Aromas of light citrus with hints of caramel malt. Mouthful is light and refreshing. Tastes of a citrus and malt balance. Has a nice lime infused tingle on the swallow. A bit old school but very sessionable.

From afar in a glass, this beer looks like any old lager. It's clear and yellow. We might drink with our eyes at first but our taste buds soon take over. Beau's Lug Tread is a perfect example of a kölsch, that unique beer from Cologne. Although the appearance isn't anything too exciting, the flavour is. It has a hoppiness that definitely tells you it's there but the bitterness is toned down a bit. The lacing is excellent and the head quickly dissipates. All in all this is an excellent beer to drink year round.

A: Clear filtered golden with little carbonation, 5 fingers of white chunky off white head with large and small bubbles.

S: Malty, vitamin c, aspirin, white grapes, white wine, white grape juice qualities. Very vinous, herbal quality.

T: White wine and grape juice coming through in the taste, a light dull bitter aftertaste, nice maltiness and dough like yeast quality.

M: Medium body, medium low carbonation, dry finish.

O: A great Canadian example of the style. Light and uniquely kolsch. Best example of a kolsch, I dare not say, but a sure good representation.

In his selfless quest for the perfect beer, Bucky picked up a 600 ml bottle of Beau’s “Lug Tread Lagered Ale”. Lug Tread was 5.2% alcohol by volume with a bottling date of February 12, 2014 printed on the rear label.

Lug Tread poured an absolutely clear light yellow/gold color with a storm of visible carbonation bubbles. The 1.5” of bubbly white head lasted for about 3 minutes before fading to a collar and thin film of foam, leaving some modest lacing in its wake. Its aroma was of lightly roasted malts, earth and grass. The beer’s taste began with sweet, light malts which gave way to an earthy and slightly grassy flavour, finishing with a mild hop bitterness which lingered as an aftertaste. Despite the abundance of visible carbonation bubbles, both the carbonation and overall mouth feel of the beer were quite soft, and I would describe the beer as light to medium bodied. A well balanced beer and perfectly respectable, but there’s nothing special enough here to elevate Lug Tread above the growing micro-brewery crowd.

One warning if you are planning to buy a single bottle from the LCBO to sample…they have a nasty habit of accidently charging for the full 4 pack, so check your bill before leaving the store. The 4x600 ml pack sells for $15.85.
