Notes/Commercial Description:
A tribute to the Roggenbiers of Germany, but done with with a North American twist. Deep copper in colour, Mr. Hyde is a rye beer that has been hopped aggressively in the American vein. However, it utilizes German hops to provide bitterness, flavour and aroma, while the rye malt provides an additional spiciness.

Dark amber colour like toffee. Hazy. 2 inches of foamy beige head. Thick glumps of lacing.

Rich aroma of sweet toffee. Grains ... rye and barley. Milky smell.

Strong rye taste that is well integrated with the malt. The rye harshness is present but not unpleasant.

Fills the mouth.

A well made rye beer. Better that others that I have had.

A - somewhat hazy dark copper, tall fluffy tan head retained pretty nicely
S - a mix of citrus fruit and peppery rye, and a light hint of burnt sugar
T - dominated by a mix of mineral, somewhat bloodlike, flavour along with peppery rye, light hints of citrus and toasted bread
M - relatively light body, juicy wet through the middle, a little spicy and slightly bitter finish
O - a flavourful and relatively easy drinking rye brew, the spiciness of the rye is nicely balanced with citrusy hop flavours, nicely done

Mr. Hyde is a sparkling clear beer that has a glossy Cajun-red tone when held against a bright light. A beehive of head quickly ballooned from the pour, its remnants leave the glass as sparkly as a Swarovski display. Although the bottom-half may reveal another side due to the introduction of sediment, this has already earned its points for sheer aesthetic elegance.

The inclusion of rye is unambiguous from smell; there's lots of yeasty phenols and esters that crowd the bouquet. It smells like beer alright but I can't trace any of the aromatics back to either the rye malt or the promised dosage of additional hops. I should've started this one off more chilled - warmth creates undesired notes of mulling spices and candied fruits.

This is a beer with minimum complexity; it shows hearty grain (the rye conjuring flavorful, seed-laden breads, crisp crackers, and most everything you find at Jewish bakery) as well as subtle nuances of toffee, toasted nuts and honey. This may be rye beer at its least complicated.

Rye typically has a little more flare than barley or wheat; most people will refer to this as "spice" and this beer's got it (though I suspect it's actually the yeast and spritzy bubbles that are the true culprits behind the stinging sensation at the end of each sip). Either way, this ale definitely has a little something that makes it appreciably different from others.

Mr. Hyde is an old concept taking on new meaning (traditional German Rye Beer aggressively hopped in modern American-style) but it only reinforces those impressions of beer which are so timeless: it as universal refreshment and rewarding sustenance. That's attributing too much credit to an average offering, but you get the idea - it's worth drinking, if only because it's beer.

Bottle: Poured a copper color ale with a large dirty beige head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry grainy malt notes is more or less pleasant. Taste is also dominated by unrefined grainy notes with some dry bitter hops notes also discernible. Body is about average with good carbonation. Spicy rye notes were not as dominant as I would have expected and some unrefined grain notes were not the flavours I was looking forward to.

Serving Type - 600ml bottle poured into a nonic pint glass.

Appearance - Pours a hazy amber/copper colour. A little bit of carbonation is visible through the haze. On top sits 2 fingers of thick white head. Some serious lacing clings to the edge of the glass. Some of the thickest lacing I've ever seen actually. Crazy.

Smell - Bits of rye and bread, with come caramel malt. Some floral aromas.

Taste - Lot's of rye (unsurprisingly) accompanied by a good deal of that rye spiciness. There's a good deal of caramel like sweetness as well. Bitterness is light to moderate, and quite well balanced.

Mouthfeel - Quite heavy. Carbonation if low to medium. Finish is 'crisp and clean'

Subscription bottle series, aka roggenbier meets rye. The same impression as the first time I had this 6 months' prior. A 1/4" white head on medium cloudy golden body, lacey. A mild rye. Good drinkability. The November bottle was more hppy but also astringent. This is smoother but could have been around for a while.

Appearance: It has a nice semi-cloudy orange/copper/amber color to it with some sediment. It has a nice off-white head that dies down slowly and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of caramel, rye bread, floral hops and some woody notes.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a nice floral, earthy and citrusy hop character to it, nice bitterness, caramel, rye, wood, and a nice spiciness.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.
