Notes/Commercial Description:
A tribute to the Roggenbiers of Germany, but done with with a North American twist. Deep copper in colour, Mr. Hyde is a rye beer that has been hopped aggressively in the American vein. However, it utilizes German hops to provide bitterness, flavour and aroma, while the rye malt provides an additional spiciness.

650ml brown bottle with no freshness date.

LOOK: Bubbly clear amber, good frothing.

SMELL: Floral, caramel, spicy rye, yeast, dried plums, fresh baked bread, cherries, faint herbal hop.

TASTE: Smooth, hop bitterness, rye bite, biscuity, dried grass, yeast, plums, leafy, herbal, faint caramel, warming alcohol, semi-sweet finish.

A little rough around the edges but not something that would take away from its drinkability. The roughness is obviously due to the generous amount of rye malt used. The 30% use of rye malt makes sure your palate gets what rye malt is all about. Good drinking.

Tall bottle as part of a two pack along with the recently-released "Dr. Jekyll" marzen. Much kudos and thanks for Jerry of Beau's for sending this my way - Cheers man!

Number 14 as part of their experimental "Wild Oats" series. Bottle #2259.

Poured into a dimpled stein glass. Dark caramel, though not as dark as other rye/roggens I've encountered thus far. Big billowing head, lots of lace, great retention.

Nose is rye bread, a bit of caramel, mild citric hops.

Interesting take on the rye style - I certainly agree with other reviewers that this brew has a lot in common with an IPA. Nice and bready at first, woodsy, spicy, a bit of caramel, and then a sudden transition to a robust hoppy finish with a bit of citrus thrown in to the mix. The finish is long and refreshing. Moderate-high carbonation, slight creaminess.

The name of this brew could not be any more appropriate. It starts off as a mild mannered and a little bit quirky German-style rye brew, before the potion kicks and the brew lurches and convulses into a woody, citrussy American I/PA. The finish, however, is a little bit from of both worlds, tricking the tastebuds into thinking that somehow two brews - two personalities, if you will - have occupied the same glass.

Really enjoyable brew for a fall afternoon.

Subscription bottle series, aka roggenbier meets rye. The same impression as the first time I had this 6 months' prior. A 1/4" white head on medium cloudy golden body, lacey. A mild rye. Good drinkability. The November bottle was more hppy but also astringent. This is smoother but could have been around for a while.

A - somewhat hazy dark copper, tall fluffy tan head retained pretty nicely
S - a mix of citrus fruit and peppery rye, and a light hint of burnt sugar
T - dominated by a mix of mineral, somewhat bloodlike, flavour along with peppery rye, light hints of citrus and toasted bread
M - relatively light body, juicy wet through the middle, a little spicy and slightly bitter finish
O - a flavourful and relatively easy drinking rye brew, the spiciness of the rye is nicely balanced with citrusy hop flavours, nicely done

Bottle: Poured a copper color ale with a large dirty beige head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry grainy malt notes is more or less pleasant. Taste is also dominated by unrefined grainy notes with some dry bitter hops notes also discernible. Body is about average with good carbonation. Spicy rye notes were not as dominant as I would have expected and some unrefined grain notes were not the flavours I was looking forward to.

Interesting take on an IPA with a rye twist. Appearance is a very nice ruby/light brown with a dense white head.

Subtle smell of hops, little else.

Very dry beer, with tannic qualities. Bitter with almost no sweetness, that dries the mouth out a bit at first, but softens the more that it is sipped.

Dark amber colour like toffee. Hazy. 2 inches of foamy beige head. Thick glumps of lacing.

Rich aroma of sweet toffee. Grains ... rye and barley. Milky smell.

Strong rye taste that is well integrated with the malt. The rye harshness is present but not unpleasant.

Fills the mouth.

A well made rye beer. Better that others that I have had.

400ml serving at Volo. Pours a nice orange and brown hue, maybe even a glint of ruby in there. Nice head which leaves sheets of lacing.

Nose is sweet with caramel, a hint of some woody spice, some citrus, bready. Fantastic complexity to the flavor, spicy rye characteristics, earthy, wood, toast, caramel. Finishes with a blast of pine and citrus, bitter and surprising, long finish and enjoyable hop burps.

Really great offering from Beaus.

Bottle shared by Steve at my 22nd Birthday. 650ml bottle, bottle no. 2295. Into a tulip.

Poured a reddish dark brown, filtered body with a lightly creamy coloured head. Nose is relatively weakk, some rye, grain and breads. Some mild fruit notes. Taste has more rye, grainy cereals, a modest hop bite and general citrus. Rye remains triumphant. Light feel and medium carbonation. Modest offering, and fairly middle of the road in most aspects. Not much going on here (in my humble opinion) other than the rye.

Appearance: It has a nice semi-cloudy orange/copper/amber color to it with some sediment. It has a nice off-white head that dies down slowly and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of caramel, rye bread, floral hops and some woody notes.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a nice floral, earthy and citrusy hop character to it, nice bitterness, caramel, rye, wood, and a nice spiciness.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

12 oz sample had at Beau's Oktoberfest 2011. From notes.

Poured a nice, clear honey-copper colour with a tan head that held on as a small collar.

Had IPA qualities in the aroma. Citrus and a buttery caramel smell were joined by rye and wood tones, spices and a slight pumplin or squash-like note.

Tasted like a West Coast IPA with a shot of rye in it. Very bitter, with strong hoppy characteristics like lemon and caramel. Rye/wood came through in the finish.

Very appetizing and drinkable. Medium-bodied with a moderate carbonation level. Nice oily quality and the wood/rye flavour lingered in the aftertaste.

Probably my favourite of the Beau's beers available at this festival. Would certainly pick up a few bottles if it was available. I liked that there was a solid wood flavour without being too smokey.

Great name... Mr. Hyde was the crazy one, and the hopping lives up to the name.

Deep copper-bronze, off-white head, good retention and lace.

Very resiny aroma that's floral and steelie, with plenty of rye bread.

I'm lovin' the rustic rye, but the hopping is a little much. Assertive bitterness, very resiny, floral and steelie mineral, burnt caramel, roasted nut, subtle fruity esters, slight alcohol warmth.

Well-attenuated, moderate body is proteinaceous, without much residual sweetness.

Overall... definitely Mr. Hyde does rye.

Serving Type - 600ml bottle poured into a nonic pint glass.

Appearance - Pours a hazy amber/copper colour. A little bit of carbonation is visible through the haze. On top sits 2 fingers of thick white head. Some serious lacing clings to the edge of the glass. Some of the thickest lacing I've ever seen actually. Crazy.

Smell - Bits of rye and bread, with come caramel malt. Some floral aromas.

Taste - Lot's of rye (unsurprisingly) accompanied by a good deal of that rye spiciness. There's a good deal of caramel like sweetness as well. Bitterness is light to moderate, and quite well balanced.

Mouthfeel - Quite heavy. Carbonation if low to medium. Finish is 'crisp and clean'
