A strong (6.5% abv) interpretation of an Irish Red Ale. Part of the batch has been aged in wheat whiskey barrels, and then reintroduced adding subtle wood and vanilla nuances.

650ml brown bottle with a freshness date

LOOK: Shiny copper hue, decent lacing all the way down

SMELL: Fresh baked bread, oak, faint fusel alcohol, vanilla, caramel, figgy

TASTE: Nearly silky smooth, creamy, medium bodied, very malty, pull from oak, mild whiskey flavor, fresh sherry, peppery, almonds, ripe plums, yeast, more wood, biscuity, dried grass, grainy barrel-aged finish

Whoa! What the hell did I just drink? Very impressed with the balance between the core of the beer and the barrel aging character. Extremely well put together, hoping they bring this one back.

Appearance: pale, slightly hazy amber, like skin of a nectarine; dense head the colour of white sand with great retention

Aroma: very grainy, wheat; some lemon peel

Taste & Mouthfeel: pretty bland really; again all grain, cereal with a bit of tart orange or grapefruit that creates some pucker in the finish; was expecting a sweeter and more full malt experience and not getting much; that tang becomes central to the profile but it's not very interesting; the suggested whisky notes are too well hidden for my tastebuds

Overall: very disappointing effort from a great brewery; odd flavours for the style and just not a fun drink

Looks great. A deep orange-red, looks nice and rich. Short head, great retention.

Caramel, predictably, on the nose, with a bit of vanilla, but nearly as pronounced as I would have thought.

Dark caramel to start, but a bit restrained. Vanilla and wood make themselves known, but the flavours are a bit flat, all a bit ho-hum.

It's a fine red ale, but there isn't anything particularly interesting about it. Every part of this needs a boost.

A - clear cedar red-brown, two fingers of light tan head was creamy and held very nicely
S - nutty, syrupy, toasty, mild leafs
T - almonds and rich toffee up front, sillky vanilla oakiness, subtle leafy hops, finishes sweet and woody
M - medium body, creamy smooth, touch of alcohol warm on the finish
O - extremely tasty and easy drinking, the smooth vanilla oak barrel aging adds a great dimension to this style of brew

Purchased at the LCBO for around the $7.00 mark or so. Served at 6deg C in a draught glass.

A- Opens well and pours a tiny head that is gone in seconds. Very dark red color. Filtered clear

S- Good malt and caramel. Lots of sweetness

T- Sickly sweet. Cinnamon and caramel. Spicy

M- Creamy good

O- Pretty good beer. Not great but very good. Nice overall blend. Beau's is a nice company that brews good beer overall

Food Pairing

This nice little brew went well with...... Smores! Crispy cookie with chocolate and marshmallow does this beer well

Bottle: Poured a clear copper color ale with a medium size foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt notes with some notes of whiskey and vanilla which brings nice character. Taste is also a mix between sweet caramelized malt notes some whiskey and vanilla notes that are not overwhelming. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Quite enjoyable and I really liked the well balanced usage of whiskey barrels.

A -Medium golden orange; translucent. Two fingers of cream colorued head.

S - Caramel, toffee, toasted grains and a floral hop aroma. A very light oak/woody aroma is present as well.

T - Sweet caramel, toffee and toasted grains with a floral hop presence. A very light toasted oak flavour is present. The barrel, although, present, isn't nearly as prominent as I would have liked. The overall favour profile is fairly retrained.

M - Light to medium body; somewhat watery at times. Light carbonation.

O - Another underwhelming offering from Beau's. This one certainly wasn't bad, but there was nothing memorable at all about it.

On tap at Stoneyard Brewing Company in Brockport, NY.

This one pours a dark reddish brown, with a very small head, and no lacing.

Smells like very mild whiskey, cereal grain, caramel, and vanilla.

This is an interesting red ale, but not quite punchy enough. The barrel-aging is definitely subtle, which is fine for the style and ABV, but I just didn't find the Irish red base that interesting. It's got some cereal graininess, and some caramel, and very mild biscuit malt, but it doesn't feel bold or rich enough for me, unfortunately. The barrel imparts some very mild sweet whiskey, and a little bit of barrel vanilla.

This is medium bodied, with a slightly thin mouthfeel, finishes a little weak. The carbonation level is lower, but not certainly not that low.

A really interesting attempt here, got to give Beau's credit for that, but not exactly entirely well executed.

On tap at the Elmdale Tavern

Pours a reddish-copper color with a thick, creamy off-white head, good retention and lacing. The nose and taste are both malt driven, caramel, brown sugar, toasted malt, hints of vanilla with some bittering hops on the finish helping to dry the beer out. It has a medium body and soft carbonation making it smooth and creamy in texture. A decent beer and a good example of the style.

A clear orangy copper colour. 2 inches of fine thick orange/white head. Light carbonation bubbles. Some lacing but not much.

The smell of hard candy, toffee and biscuit.

A full smooth taste of roasted malt with bitterness. Like a thick bite of creamy caramel. First the malt and then a touch of sweetness at the end. As the glass warms the flavour of the barrels comes through with the taste of whisky added to the caramel.

A full mouth feel. Smooth with a slight carbonation sharpness.

The smooth creamy taste is outstanding. The extra malt used makes for a deep flavour and stronger alcohol. The partial barrel aging is the icing on a very nice cake.

I will need to stock up on this one before it disappears.

A: Giant 4 fingers of foamy carbonation settles to a blanket of bone white mini foam. A burnt orange brew with a slight haze with just one or 2, lazy streams of carbonation.

S: Smells of fresh cut oranges, sweet malts and rock candy, smells clean and fresh.

T: Tastes fresh with mild malts, candied orange peel and a buttery chardonnay flavour. Flavours are mild, but the oaks finish strong with a mild linger.

M: Medium chew and a syrup feel that clings to the palette. Some buzz of carbonation that grip the tongue.

O: A pleasant brew that's an easy drinker, not especially sweet or complicated, but an approachable drink.

Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $8

Appearance - Clear amber colour with an average size fizzy/frothy beige coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes.

Smell - Caramel, grass, breads/grains

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, metallic notes, and an earthiness. There is also some anise, caramel, and a hint of wood. It ends with a malty earthy aftertaste.

Overall – An interesting beer.. I was on the fence with this one. Didn't love it but I can appreciate its nuances. Not my favourite style of beer but from my experience with irish reds this one seems well done.

Bottle shared by Steve, 650ml into a Beau's pint glass. Wild Oats release #18, 24IBUs.

Unfiltered hazy reddish brown, with a creamy cap of head. Solid retention and a bit of lacing. Nose has some fruitiness, toasted wood, light vanilla, and subtler barrel notes. Some malt sweetness as well. More fruit notes in the flavour, vanilla, brown sugar and the wheat whiskey barrels come through moreso than in the nose. Some light whiskey and woodiness, very subtle hopping as well. Medium full body, and a medium low carbonation. Sweet and sticky finish - certainly an interesting and unique offering. Curious as to what barrels were used (I had never heard of wheat whiskey up to this point). Good complexity and a nice twist on an Irish Red - I'd have this again.

Appearance: It has a nice deep hazy orange color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down moderately and leaves little lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of toffee, caramel, bready malts, floral hops, oak and tart cherries.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some sweet toffee, caramel, some woody oak, bready malts, floral hops, some citrus and a bit of sourness.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

600 mL bottle picked up at the LCBO; packaged Feb. 5 2015 and served slightly chilled. Is the label art/name supposed to be a Strong Bad reference or something? Because if so, that is awesome.

Pours a deep, clear ruby-amber colour, producing one finger of soapy, off-white froth that seeps away relatively quickly over the next couple of minutes. A wispy film on the surface manages to survive, along with a thin collar and a modest amount of lace. The nose is best-described as being malt-forward, with toffee sweetness, toasted nuts and biscuity malts providing the bulk of the bouquet. Notes of oak and vanilla are also detectable, but they seem content to remain quietly in the background.

Well-balanced flavour profile, but nothing too exciting going on. Toffee remains dominant, with bready, biscuity malt and toasted nuts figuring in prominently, too. Slight hints of red berry and citrus fruit. Flavours from the barrel-aged fraction - oak, vanilla and whiskey - are noticeable toward the tail end, though they remain relatively subtle, even as the glass warms. Finishes with a mildly floral, spicy bitterness that soon fades behind some lingering vanilla and a gentle, boozy sweetness. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation levels that give this brew a somewhat crisp bite, and a smooth, almost slick feel on the palate. As far as abv goes, this one punches a little above its weight - but I'm ok with that.

Final Grade: 3.83, an acceptable B+. You'll be able to count on Strong Patrick for a few rounds, but in the end I don't think he's going to be a major contender for my refrigerator real estate. This is a well-made beer in a relatively uninteresting style - and while it might be (and probably is) the best Irish Red Ale I've ever had, I still don't find that it makes a particularly compelling glass of beer. Would I drink this again? Absolutely - it's pretty tasty and there's nothing wrong with it. But as far as Beau's products go, it's not something I'd recommend going out of your way for.
