Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Based on a long-lost brewing recipe from the Hudson Valley in the early 1800s, we used New York State malts and whole leaf Cluster hops (a heritage variety) to authentically recreate this heirloom ale.

Beaus private order group. Traditional as in no hops, myrtle detected. So-so drinkable. A strong yeast aroma, funky yeast beverage mostly. Soft carbonation. Medium yellow with some bubbles, and lace lines. A little other spices to try to spice it up. Nothing exceptional.

I've put this under English Pale because I'm not sure where else it fits. Described by Beau's as a "Traditional Ale". Based on a recipe from 19th Century New York using Cluster hops.

Beau's has always had quality control issues and you run a risk everytime you pick up one of their bottles. I got this as part of their Oktoberfest 6 pack, and this is the third I've had that was disappointingly flat. Bit of fizz on the pour, but settles to nothing very quickly. Colour is a dull gold. Not great.

Aroma is barnyardy. Wet hay and a bit of caramel sweetness.

The hay and grain come through thick on first contact, very nice malt flavours. Cluster hops are really interesting, offering a bit of English-style bitterness with a bit of a resinous character. Honey sweetness throughout.

A nice beer, comparable to traditional English brews. Wish it had been in a bit better shape, but, again, that's a failing of the brewery.

Bottle shared by Steve, 600ml into a tulip. Wild Oats Series #22, batch 2866 - bottled September 26, 2012.

Clear pale orange, white head with minimal retention. Nose of a traditional herbed beer, some gentle spicing, citrus and general herbal/gruit character. A bit bready. Taste has bready malt, some citrus, general herbal and gruit character again but nothing of much interest. Medium light body, medium low carbonation. Nothing terribly interesting here, and not a beer I'd revisit.

Appearance: It has a nice semi-cloudy golden/yellow color to it. It has a nice white head that dies down somewhat fast and leaves little lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of yeast, lemony spices, some citrus and some breadiness

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some bready yeast, lemony spices, light citrus and some grainy malts.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

Bottle acquired as part of the brewery's Oktoberfest mixed 6. Poured into a Beau's ceramic beer mug.

Pours pale yellow and slightly hazy with a white fizzy / fluffy head that lasts decent and laces a bit. A spicy nose with hints of lemon and light graininess. The body has a tartness that is surprising, but works fairly with the overall beer. Little grain character, though it is dominated by the lemony tartness and spicy pepper. The tartness is a little strong on the palate with a light watery body unable to balance it out. While I know nothing about the historical style of beer that was being replicated it seems decent, though not something I would have wanted much more of.
