Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Schwarz is bigger than your Schwarz... and tastier too! This extra-strong version of a German black lager displays pronounced roasted flavours juxtaposed with a lager’s enjoyable crispness.

Black with a big bubbly head and lacey. A strange sulpher aroma. Wine like initially, and a chocolate taste, thinner than expected for the style.Roasted, but some astringency in the finish. so-so drinkability owing to flaws. Private Beaus buying club bottle..

Pours a deep, deep, deep, near-black red. Nice thick off-white head.

Dark read fruit with just a bit of roastiness on the nose.

Sweet dark fruit gives way to bittersweet chocolate, verging on coffee.

Almost porter-like. Really complex dark malt flavours, but supremely drinkables. Nice stuff.

Bottle: Poured a dark black color lager with a huge dark foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of chocolate malt and dry roasted coffee is quite enjoyable. Taste is also dominated by some black chocolate notes with some dry roasted coffee. Limited residual sugar with a dry but not astringent finish. Body is about average for style with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Easy and smooth drinking with enough complexity.

650 ml bottle from Beau's Oktoberfest pack.

A dark dark brown, almost black with just a touch of red on the edge when held to the light.
3 inches of dark beige, fine at the surface and large bubbles inside.
Great lacing and retention.

An inviting aroma of semi-sweet chocolate.

There is lots going on with the taste. Bitter chocolate. Most of the sweetness is gone. Black licorice. Dark roasted nuts that are like oak. Very good grassy hops blossoms in the mouth and forms the big aftertaste.

On the heavy side of medium. Creamy feel.

Excellent. Full flavour. Often the hops are missing in this style. The brewer when over the top with everything and it works.

On tap at BarHop, for the Black and Orange Hallowe'en event. Served in a snifter - described as an imperial schwarzbier. Wild Oats #23.

Black with some deep red translucence, dense crimson brown head with good lace and moderate retention. Nose of heavy chocolate and dark malts, earthy with even some caramel. Taste has tons of dark malt character, some bakers chocolate but lesser than the nose, even some oats or wheat in here perhaps? Caramel as well. Medium full feel and medium carbonation that's almost perfect after a bit of swirling down. Only a touch of alcoholic warmth. A delicious black beer, something to certainly revisit and perhaps one's of Beau's best offerings.

Appearance: It has a nice almost jet-black color to it with some ruby hues shining through. It has a nice thick mocha head that dies down moderately slow and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of chocolate, sweet roasty malts, caramel and eathy hops.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has alot of chocolate, a nice roasty character, light caramel and a decent earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas. Props to Beau's on making such a great Schwarzbier.

600 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. About $6 CDN for a bottle. Star Wars esque looking label.

Appearance - very black, all light it is eradicated when looking in the glass. Two fingers of tan head are poured, but it dissipates quickly. Some strongly lacing left behind.

Smell - roasty coffee aroma stands out of front, but there's a hidden black lidocaine smell in there too. Other than that not a lot, but the aroma is simple straightforward and moderately potent. Also a whiskey like aroma blended in.

Taste - starts mildly sweet like a vanilla and caramel cutting through the coffee and black licence bitterness, before turning rather bitter for good with a lasting aftertaste. Slight booziness of this beer shines through here. Very well crafted.

Mouthfeel - spritzy, highly carbonated, but with a light feel given the appearance and flavor profile. Moderately wet finish.

Overall - a very well crafted brew, one of my new favorites in the schwarzbier style, and probably one of the best five offerings I've had from Beau's. Some thing I would spend money on to purchase again and a great afternoon sipper while watching football.

Got from the Beau's oktoberfest mixer pack. Colour is black with a good lacing, tight film, dark tan colour.

S - aroma holds a potent black malt aroma, licorice, quite roasty and tarry, but not overwhelmingly bitter. Get a lot of black strap molasses notes, syrupy dark maltiness, some cooked apple fruits hidden in there, as well as cherries, there are some lighter hop aromatics here also. A thick and intriguing aroma.

T - smooth coffee, grapefruit, smooth toffee, some licorice comes through, has a really complex start with some yeasty aspects (minerality, bright citrus, and light anise spice?) a touch of harshness then more of the molasses and dark malts, bitter cocoa, not a very heavy beer despite the abv, it does have a slick syrupiness and has some of the heavier syrupy molasses/licorice character but this is mostly balanced. On the finish these are tied up with a crisp enduring spice.

M - a full bodied beer with a good balance of black and roasty malts and brighter yeasty and hop notes, rounded smooth gentle carbonation. Great drinkability to it, with a subtle roasty bitterness on the end.

I have to agree with the supplied notes on this on, retains a crisp and drinkable edge with a restrained roastiness for such a dark lager. No shortage of complex malty flavours and the aroma captures some of coffee and subtle spiciness. Altogether a robust and very flavourful interpretation. Beau's continues to impress and this is certainly no exception, a very nice and balanced example of the style. Worth seeking out, really solid stuff.
