600mL bottle from the LCBO. Interesting label and bottle design.

Poured into a tulip. Caramel golden, vigorous carbonation, a half inch of head that recedes into a nice frothy ring. A wintry pattern of lace icicles.

Nose is an interesting mix of herbs and grain. The list of additives (heather, gale, yarrow, heather) makes it seem like a gruit, although aside from the heather what I'm really getting here is mild ginger. Still quite pleasant though.

Dry, herbal, bit of ginger. Quite tasty, actually. The finish is a nice bittering hop and herb punch that really hits the spot.

Thinner bodied, my only real complaint with the brew is the carbonation, which is way too sharp.

Interesting brew, certainly will get again. I think I prefer this to their regular gruit offering, Bogwater.

Rather nice interpretation of a Nordic Pale Ale. Approximately $4.00 at the LCBO for the 600ml bottle. Served at 6deg C into a tumbler. Batch number 3312 10 22 13 10:08. Mighty fresh!!

A- Nice off blond, amber colour. Pours with an excellent head that stays for a minute or two then dissipates to a film across the surface.

S- Very interesting smell...added greens from some coniferous?? Smells just like it... more later.

T- there's those added greens again! Yup, just like staying in the woods for a while and you have a cup of natural tea. Not overpowering by any means but it does bring back memories. Pretty good PA. Not the best but a combination of spices perks this beer right up.

M- Grainy. Not much else to say other than that.

O- Pretty good! Glad I enjoyed it and would again but not worth going out of the way for after the first one or two so out of convenience I bought 5! LOL. Excellent experience.

Food Pairing

With the coniferous notes and spice bite this beer matches well with... Moose Chili

The spice of the garlic, onion, chili powder, woodsy taste of the Moose Chili this spicy beer will match very well.

A- Pours a orange hued copper color.....even yellow hues.....interesting! The head starts off well, about two fingers thick and quickly disappears into a soapy looking layer. Lacing is very good....plenty of foamy patches clinging to the glass! Appears to have a good amount of fine carbonation rising to the top as well!

S- Spicy, herbal notes, tart berries, wood all come into play with this one. The cranberries used are noticed, and the spice reminds me of peppercorn without the zing. Hop presence is muted and there is a certain sweetness about it...perhaps from the maple syrup used.

T- Very dry and flowery would best describe this one. It is Earthy, wild and leafy all at the same time. I've never been out in the wild North but somehow this reminds me of spending time in the woods......berries, leaves, roots and sage like spice come to mind. Medicinal.......

M/O- Solid medium body and the carbonation is finely tuned but does provide a cleansing nature at the same time, this is very different, and in a good way. I expected something else I thin and am pleasantly surprised by the overall character of the ingredients used...some I've never tried or heard of before. I may get this again if given the chance.

Tap: Poured a hazy beige color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of dry hoppy notes with light herbal feel. Taste is also dominated by dry hoppy notes with some herbal notes and lightly sweet malt notes. Body is full with good carbonation. This was an enjoyable beer but I can’t say I detected half of the ingredient after reading the commercial description!

Light caramel yellow colour with 2 inches of white foam with large bubbles. Some lacing but not much retention.

Strong bitter citrus aroma with pepper. The smell of a clean cold refrigerator.

Lots of citrus in the taste. Grapefruit and pine and spicy. Dry tart bitterness. Unique flavours that are hard to describe. Rye bitter bit not not extreme.

Crisp medium feel.

This is an interesting beer. Good citrus hops with nice spiciness.

A: Golden copper filtered with no carbonation, 4 fingers of off white head leaving chunky lacing.

S: Pine, heavily hopped like a west coast ipa style, pineapple, passionfruit, red chillies,

T: Pine, menthol, pineapple, passion fruit, light sweetness, sage which I suppose is the sweet gale, heavy bitter hops also in a west coast ipa style. Earthy herbal taste which is perhaps the heather.

M: Medium resinous syrupy body, numbing bitter finish.

O: Really like an IPA to me, but well crafted. Only getting a little sweet gale and perhaps heather, but non of the maple syrup, cranberries, or rosehips as the hops are so strong. That said, it’s a good beer, cool style, bottle and concept.

600ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $4.65

Appearance - Slightly hazy amber colour with an average size white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, caramel, hops

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel, and some hops. There is also a bit of a graininess, some ginger, and a bit of a fruit sweetness.

Overall - Not your average APA but that's a good thing. The flavours are pretty interesting and the beer is very drinkable. The slight fruity/berry flavour mixed with the hops give it a nice bite. I'd pick this one up again. It has some of the same flavours I tasted in the Dunham / Kissmeyer Leo's Early Breakfast IPA.
