Dark, muddy brown...roasted malts on the nose....molasses and brown sugar too..

Very sweet, rich, luxurious taste of dark fruits (plums, blackberries) molasses, roasted malts and a boozy rum like characteristic..

Mouthfeel is creamy...smooth..rich...almost velvety...full bodied...medium to low carbonation..

Very nice doppel...extremely sweet...too sweet to enjoy more than a couple at a time but a rich, flavorful sipper that borders on being special..

Dark brown in color, slight crimson around the edges. Small caramel colored head died to a ring and film quickly. The aroma was sweet and malty, cherry-like fruitiness. The taste was of sweet, sugary molasses with an array of fruit flavors, cherries, raspberries and other brambles, as well as, and I was surprised, strawberries. All of this even before the beer warmed much. Spaten Optimator was the first doppelbock I found I really liked so I generally use it as a standard, the Intoxicator had a bit lighter body, wasn't as yeasty. There was a bit of spiciness from hops, but it was a very clean malt all in all. The mouthfeel is kind of dry, but sweet and sticky. The alcohol is noticeable in the aftertaste but not overbearing. I could have one or two of these, but then I would have to move onto something a bit lighter.

Tasted On-Tap 09/14/05 at the Minneapolis, MN location.

Mahogany brown with a thin ringed head. Typical malty aroma and flavors in line with style and a touch of alcohol. Nice nutty malt flavors and balanced well. Medium-light bodied and definitely leaned light for the style.

Interesting: Had this served to me outside. I went inside later to the bar. When I went to inquire about the Doppelbock, I was told they didn't have one on tap ... hmmm. It was pretty good for a beer that didn't exist. :-)

Much thanks to fantome, and to Todd H. for getting and giving, respectively, this bottle...

Deep russet brown hue, full cocoa-toned head, a beautiful sight...

Aroma: lovely, toffee and nuts, chocolate, absolutely gorgeous...sweet, sweet, sweet...

Lush play on the palate...solid, big, fat malt, ...this is a top of the line doppel, to match any. Seriously. Wait, please, while I take another taste, to be sure I judged this succor correctly...

oooh, it's luxurious thing, all praises are justified, and I could toss a few more out, too...luxurious, uplifting, enervating, delightful...

..this was rejected by some judging board at a festival as being "too chocolatey" for the style, if I recall my sources correctly?...screw them, it's too damned tasty for that quibbling crap!
This transcends the typical doppelbock, and maybe it's not to style, but who cares...I'm utterly content with the contents of this bottle, and am grateful to be one of the few to enjoy it in such a fashion.

Not sure how I stumbled into this bottle conditioned, cellared sample of the Intoxicator, but the Beer gods were shining down on me today. And it didn't hurt to know Stubob either. Thanks man.

I hear this was 10+ a/v. Let's see what this is all about.

Deep, dark bloody red appearance. Clear, but not much UV gets through. Thin light brown head leaves some sparse lace. Good looking brew. Great aroma of bready malts. Thick and rich. And just the slightest bit of rummy alcohol. This is a very tasty dopplebock. I love the thick bready malt presence. A little bit of the figs and dates thing going on. A little brown sugar. A little sticky molasses. Alcohol is really held in check. Hops serve to balance and don't make an appearance on the flavor profile....just as it should be. Body is about medium-full. Damn this is good! This is one of the best Dopplebocks I've had. Right up there with the big hitters...Hooker's Liberator, Andech's, Optimator, etc... What a treat.

This beer won Silver medal at the Real Ale/Cask Ales Fest in Chicago for dopplebocks last year, although this was the tap version, none-the-less I know why. Yummy sweet chocolate!
Color is a very deep brown with infused mahogany reddish edges. Small but thickly tight and creamy cocoa brown head.

Aroma is darkly sweet with malts and chocolate, a very interesting blend of chocolate and dark fruits of banana and dulled dark cherry with slight touches of molasses, toffee, and raisin.

Taste is fantastic; smooth, thick, and creamy with a great carry over from the smell. Again the tastes blend well together of sweet milk chocolate and dark fruits, mostly banana with some molasses, dark toffee, and touches of raisin and cherry. Very interestingly yummy! A puree of fruits and chocolate.

Silky smooth feel thats nearly full and has a fairly calm carbonation lending some excellent quaffability.
Darn good stuff.
