Dark beer that pours a small head but leaves quite a bit of lace. There is a reason they call this Sweet Magnolia. Wow was it sweet. Too sweet, I felt that it needed a bit of a kick of something else (although the alcohol content was not low). It was a decent beer but I got halfway through the beer and thought I was drinking a soft drink. Well not really but I think you get the point.

Poured a deep hazelnut brown, witha smallish off white head, decent retention and a good amount of residual lace. Smell was roasted caramel and a bit of english hops. Nice decent flavor, a bit thin, but very nicely balanced and rounded out with the hop profile leaving a somewhat dry finish. Overall this was fairly decent and a very nice offering from them. Seems this place gets a bit better with their darker beers.

Review from 2004, put on wrong restaurant:

Brown in color with a medium body, Sweet Magnolia has a floral hop aroma created by Mt. Hood hops. A sweet, malty flavor is rendered by Crystal and Chocolate malts from the United Kingdom. Sweet Magnolia Brown won a gold medal in the 1998 Great American Beer Festival in Denver. For a brown ale, the appearance in unimopressive but the tastes makes up for it.

This review pertains to a cask-conditioned version of the Brown Ale.

Appearance: Although milk chocolate brown colored, looked very much like a stout, with the slowly forming head that starts about 2/3 of the way down the glass and then condenses and settles to about a 3 finger head. Great head retention and lacing.

Smell: Lots of caramel malt overtones with a touch of dark fruit, nuts and cola

Taste: Full-flavored with a rich brown ale flavors - a bit of chocolate, cola and nuts; somewhat toasted; low hops profile

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied with modest carbonation

Drinkability: A supurb English Brown Ale.
