On-tap 19-Jan-2012, Long Beach California:

A: The appearance is right on. Dark, sensual, very attractive. Medium lacing, with a fairly absent head.

S: Roasted and toasted malts, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, light hops. An inviting smell.

T: Chocolate and coffee prevail as the primary flavors. You get a hint of the dark fruits. Plums come to mind. Bitter on the end.

M: Oily, thick and heavy. The flavor spreads quite well.

O: This was a pretty enjoyable beer for me. I'd recommend it if you're checking out Rock Bottom.

Pours pitch black with not much head, no lace.
The smell is light. Slight chocolate, dirt, vanilla, pretty simple.
I always hate to say the smell and taste are alike but they do. The taste is very balanced and super drinkable for a RIS.
Not a bad brew just far too pricy for what you get.

Growler, filled this afternoon...waiting in my fridge ever since...onyx black, no head at all.

Slightly sweet aroma, molasses, dark rum, a touch of anise...but fairly mellow for the style. Full and malty.

Taste: substantial, but still lacking. Mouthfilling, rich, sweet, and tasty. Not much complexity, though.
I expect more from an Imperial Stout. But to be fair, this
tasted much better on tap at the pub.

Certainly drinkable, but needs much more depth.Ah,well.

A-Dark brown/black...no head..

S-Not tremendously assertive....mild cocoa, nuts and raisens...

T-A lot of hear...boozy and harsh....vodka...some burnt malt...a little semi sweet dark chocolate

M-Feels medium bodied at best...very low carbonation gives it a fragile feel.

D-Not impressed with this...boozy, alcoholic, lacks body and it flavor to back it up.

Thick looking midnight black. Nice crop of creamy brown head sits on top and laces adequately as I drink. Nice aroma of roasted malts, blackened malts and a little char and some cocoa. Nice blend of flavors with roasted and charred malts the domineering ones. There's also a semblence of milk sugar/lactose in the beer. Bitterness lingers nicely. Body is medium to medium full. Pleasant beer, but at 7.9%, you won't be mistaking this one for a Bigass Badass Imperial Stout. But overall, still a nice tasting stout.

Draught @ the brewery. Black color, with a small brown head. Mildly aromatic, with prominent malt aromatics, which hints of black currants, cocoa and chocolate and very low aroma hops, which is usually great, unless the malt aroma is dull, as in this case. Nice rich body. Flavor is very fruity for an imperial stout, malt accented, with hints of chocolate and roast and a mildly citrusy hop finish.

On tap, Winterfest 2005, St. Paul, MN...

Dark and opaque, the right look with a nice speckly brown head. Aroma of fruit, candied pears and some brief metallics. Medium mouthfeel, with the lower ABV seems to come a less sticky quality than some. Light and hoppy flavors, seems like the Nugget hops or something related combine with the darker malts to give a flavor that's decidedly peachy, even to the point of bitter qualities a lot like the alkaloids of peach pits. A little unidimensional in overall quality, but a different tasting take on an Imperial.
