Barrel-aged version, served in 12 oz. snifter.

A trio of black orbs (snifters) arrived at our table, each capped with an off-white creamy foam. Beautiful.

The aroma was rich and hung in the air, Kona coffee was the main element. Very similar to Bell's Java Stout and Founder's Breakfast Stout in the distinct high-quality coffee aroma. A good hint of bourbon came out also, when my nose was in the glass.

Taste was very big, roasty malt, round bourbon, rich coffee, and burnt chocolate. Pretty decadent, definately a sipper. The finish was somewhat dry and oaky. Bourbon was balanced well with the coffee, and the mouthfeel was a shade under a stout. If I had more time to kill, another glass would have been no problem!

Highly reccommended...

Note: Sampled at RB Chicago, Pete Crowley brewmaster

Good Lord! Brewmaster Pete has three barrel-aged beers out in the summer! Oh, wait... it’s GABF time. In that case...

The bourbon notes here are not that prominent. Perhaps because it’s combining with the coffee to give it more of a Kahlua type smell. Seems nice and creamy at first, but then the coffee and hop bitterness combine to give a little tickle on the roof of your mouth. That said, it may not be "extreme" enough for a barrel-aged category, but it’s black, chewy, creamy and coffee-y, so what more could you want?

This one was served in a snifter coal black with brown purple head.

Big nose of bourbon, coffee, plums & raisins. You can really tell this one was aged in the bourbon barrel.

Taste is big and bold. I go lots of bourbon, molasses and plums. This one will definitely warm you up! The alcohol taste is masked, but very present. Almost an expreso taste.

The mouth is silky smooth but this is a once a night treat. It took me a good enjoyable 45 minutes to finish!

Last beer of the whirlwind Chicago tour of business and the perfect thing needed before handling a unruly vendor.

Beer arrives in the mug, tall, dark brown black with a whisper cracker crispy brown head.

Aroma is chocolate and coffee with the coffee coming on the forefront as one would hope in a beer called a "coffee" porter.

Flavor is sweet espresso cut by a more pleasant roast than found in blackened coffee beans. Body is surprisingly well built (most american porters seem thin to me) and eases the beer down the throat and prepares the drinker for the next go.

All in all a very favorable beer from the folks at RB Chicago.
