On tap at Rock Bottom PDX, 7.2.2010, $4.25 a pint, 6.0 ABV, 14.5 OG, 27 IBU.

Clear light orange-gold body, 1 finger white head, tiny bubbles, no visible carbonation with little lacing. Nose is spicy cardamon, a small bit of orange peel, no bitterness to speak of. Taste is a bit on the sweet side (candi sugar?), orange peel, cardamon, no clove, floral hops but not bitter. A bit light on the saison character, undercarbonated. Mouthfeel is medium-light, dry attentuated, crisp finish with minimal effervescence. Pretty refreshing though a bit under-carbonated for the style.

A draught pint at the Portland Rock Bottom, Toche Le Fond (touch the bottom) was a clear, light amber with only the slightest egg-shell collar.
The nose was rather muted, sweet malt and floral with a touch of spice. But Rock Bottom is a really smoky bar...

Taste had a firm noble hop spice to it, a bit grassy, with the phenols and peppery esters that are indicative of a saison yeast, but there was no barnyard funk at all. A crisp mineral dryness finished it off.

Pretty nice effervescence but not attenuated enough and a bit heavy for the style, although it finished crisp and clean in spite of being borderline cloying mid-palate.

The Toche Le Fond was nothing special, and since Saison is my favorite style, I was a little disappointed. As I often find to be the case with microbrewed saisons, it was dumbed down and to malty. Still, it easy drinking and fairly refreshing, and had most of the attributes a saison should have, just maybe not the right balance. The maltiness had me thinking more along the lines of a biere de garde.
